The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released a report, according to which India joined the United States and China as one of the world's 5 biggest military spenders. As per the SIPRI report, New Delhi's defence spending increased by 5.5 percent to $63.9 billion in 2017. Now it has surpassed France. Worldwide military spending increased to $1.73 trillion in 2017, which is nearly 2.2 percent of global gross domestic product. The list of the world's biggest military spenders is dominated by the US and China, which spent $610 billion and $228 billion respectively. Beijing's share of worldwide military expenditure increased to 13 percent in 2017 from 5.8 percent in 2008. India's defence spending increased because of salaries and pensions for its personnel and it doesn't denote that the armed forces are procuring advanced equipment.

Adarsh Credit bagged "Best Co-operative Society on digital platform" award in the BFSI leadership Awards 2018, at Hotel Eros in New Delhi. Deepak Sharma, Zonal Manager, Gurgaon received the award on behalf of Adarsh Credit Co-operative Society Ltd. Adarsh Credit is the first credit co-operative society in India to perform financial services digitally. Institutions like Max Bupa Health Insurance, VMware, SREI and National Informatics Center were also awarded at the BFSI Leadership awards 2018.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is conducting a two-day National Workshop on Data Requirements for Disaster Risk Reduction Database in New Delhi on 2nd and 3rd May, 2018. NDMA is conducting this workshop in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). India's National Disaster Database will be a dynamic platform having locally obtained and validated data on nationwide losses of properties and lives, occurring due to disasters. The workshop will have several technical sessions. One of the key activities to be carried out at the workshop will be to develop a standardised template for data collection, updation and validation to ensure accuracy and quality. This two-day workshop will be attended by representatives of concerned Central Ministries and Departments, State Governments, United Nations agencies, Disaster Management Institutes, Administrative Training Institutes (ATIs) and Universities.

As per data released by World Health Organisation (WHO), 14 Indian cities have figured in a list of 20 most polluted cities in the world. 'Polluted Cities' in context of this news, implies particulate matter (PM) 2.5 concentrations in air in 2016. It includes pollutants like sulphate, nitrate and black carbon. 14 Indian cities that have figured in the list are: Kanpur, Faridabad, Gaya, Patna, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Patiala, Lucknow, Delhi and Varanasi. The WHO data measured levels of fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) from more than 4300 cities in 108 countries. As per WHO's estimates, around 7 million people die every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air. Continuous exposure to fine particles causes several diseases including lung cancer, stroke, heart disease and respiratory infections, including pneumonia.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) will hold National Conference of 244 Districts under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) in New Delhi on May 4, 2018. The Nodal Officers of 244 Districts, State Nodal Officers and Senior officers will be present in the day-long Conference. The Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi will be the Chief Guest at the function. The Conference will provide an opportunity for experience sharing and will motivate the new districts to plan and execute the programme successfully. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the All India expansion of BBBP scheme in 640 districts across the country. These 244 Districts from across the country will be covered under Multi-Sectoral Intervention. This is in addition to the already covered 161 Districts. Remaining 235 Districts will be covered through Media campaign and advocacy outreach.

Easing foreign investment rules, the RBI on 1st May permitted Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPIs) to invest in treasury bills issued by the Central Government. The RBI also asked the FPIs to bring down their total exposure in debt instruments (G-secs or corporate bonds). Treasury Bills are short term (up to one year) borrowing instruments of the Government & they are auctioned by RBI.

Jagdish Mukhi has been sworn in as the acting governor of Manipur by the Acting Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, Justice N Kotiswar Singh. As per official release, Mukhi, who is the governor of Assam and Meghalaya, will hold office in the absence of Governor Najma Heptullah. The swearing-in was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar Singh, Speaker Y Khemchand Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Ksh Bhabananda Singh, the council of ministers, the chief secretary and director general of police and other senior officials.

The World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on May 3 to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives while following their profession. The 2018 theme "Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law" highlights the importance of an enabling legal environment for press freedom and gives special attention to the role of an independent judiciary in ensuring legal guarantees for press freedom and the prosecution of crimes against journalists. The day serves as an occasion to encourage and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide.

In order to establish 1,50,000 the Health and Wellness Centres (HWC) by 2022, share and give a common understanding of the multiple components to enable HWC to deliver comprehensive primary health care, a two-day conference was organized under Ayushman Bharat. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with technical support from the National Health Systems Resource Centre, recently. Workshop proceedings started with an overview presentation of the various components of Comprehensive Primary Health Care. It emphasized the critical importance of selecting motivated candidates as Mid-Level Health Providers and strengthening the Primary Health Care team including the Multi-Purpose Workers (male and female) and ASHA. The importance of the shift from selective to comprehensive primary health care, the uninterrupted availability of medicines for chronic diseases, and the criticality in establishing a seamless continuum of care, to build trust and confidence in the public health system and in reducing out of pocket expenditure were highlighted. In addition, the importance of integrating active case finding for tuberculosis in HWC to meet the national commitment of TB elimination was emphasized.

Hockey India has appointed Harendra Singh as coach of India's men's team, while Sjoerd Marijne will take over as chief coach of women's side. Harendra led the junior men's hockey team to the World Cup title in 2016. Before joining the Indian women's team, Marijne had a successful tenure with the Netherlands' women's team.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved upgradation and expansion of airport infrastructure at Lucknow, Chennai and Guwahati airports with a total cost of over Rs 5,000 crore. Union commerce and industry minister, Suresh Prabhu reportes as the Chennai Airport's new terminal building will have a capacity of 35 million passengers per year. It will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2467 crore. The new terminal building of Guwahati Airport will have a capacity of 9 million passengers per year. It will be built at a cost of Rs 1383 Crore. And the new terminal building of Lucknow Airport will have a capacity of 13.6 million passengers per year. It will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1232 Crore.

The Hyderabad city police launched the 'eOffice' System in the city Police Commissionerate office as a citizen-friendly initiative. eOffice is a 'product suit' developed by NIC and it aims at handling files in a more efficient and transparent manner to improve the responsiveness to citizens. The system helps in faster clearance of files and it envisions a paper-less office.
