Olympiad Test: Mensuration - 1 - Question 1

A piece of ductile metal is in the form of a cylinder of radius 0.5 cm and length 6 cm. It is drawn out into a wire of diameter 1 mm. What will be the length of the wire?

Detailed Solution: Question 1

  • Since the volume of metal remains constant during the drawing process, we set the volume of the original cylinder equal to the volume of the wire.
  • The volume of the cylinder is calculated as pi x (radius)2 x length, which equals pi x (0.5 cm)2 x 6 cm = pi x 0.25 x 6 = 1.5 pi cm3.
  • The wire is also a cylinder with a diameter of 1 mm, which means its radius is 0.05 cm (because 1 mm equals 0.1 cm, and half of that is 0.05 cm).
  • Its volume is given by pi x (0.05 cm)2 x L = pi x 0.0025 x L cm3.
  • Equate the two volumes: 1.5 pi = 0.0025 pi x L.
  • Cancel pi from both sides to get 1.5 = 0.0025 x L, so L = 1.5/0.0025 = 600 cm, which is equivalent to 6 metres.
