• ‘Magnaporthe oryzae’ is a fungus that causes ‘wheat blast’. It is currently destroying wheat crops in South America, threatening its food security in a major scale.
• Scientists have warned that the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae could spread worldwide. Cases of infection have earlier been reported in Asia in 2016 and Africa in 2018.

• The National Quantum Mission was approved recently by the Union Cabinet. Its aim is to seed, nurture and scale scientific and industrial research and development and create an innovative ecosystem in quantum technology.
• The Centre has approved Rs 6,003 crore for the National Quantum Mission, to fund scientific and industrial research development in quantum technology.

• The National Conference on Water Sufficient Panchayat, Clean & Green Panchayat and Healthy Panchayat will be held in New Delhi.
• It will showcase best practices followed by Panchayati Raj institutions (PRI) and augment capacity building of elected representatives with greater exposure, interactive learning and experience sharing.

• The Union Cabinet cleared the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023 which has provisions for harsher punishments for film piracy and the introduction of new age categories for classifying films.
• The Bill will be introduced in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, as per the Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.

• Jharkhand Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (Amendment) Bill, 2022 proposes a raise in reservation in state government jobs from 60 percent to 77 percent for SC, ST and OBC communities as well as the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
• Jharkhand Governor recently returned this bill to the government, directing it to be reviewed.

• The country’s first water-based metro service started commercial operations in Kochi, Kerala. Water Metro ferries began their commercial operation on the Vyttila-Kakkanad route.
• Kochi Water Metro saw a footfall of 6,559 passengers. Manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited, the metro project will run eight electric hybrid boats on two routes.

• ‘Mehngai Rahat Camp’ was recently inaugurated by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. They will provide relief for people from rising inflation.
• Under these camps, the general public and deprived sections will be provided relief from inflation by connecting them with the public welfare schemes of the state government.

The ‘Asia-Pacific Leaders’ Conclave on Malaria Elimination’ will be organized in New Delhi by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in partnership with the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA) as a precursor to World Malaria Day.
Its goal is to reaffirm political commitment to achieve malaria elimination by 2030.

• World Book and Copyright Day is observed every year on April 23 to promote the habit of reading, writing, publishing and copyright.
• The first World Book Day was observed in 1995. International Decade of Indigenous Languages will be observed from 2022 to 32. The UNESCO theme of the World Book Day 2023 is ‘Indigenous Languages’.

• Kesavananda Bharati Case is a landmark case where the Supreme Court defined the basic structure of the Indian Constitution. The judgement for this case was delivered on April 24, 1973.
• The case is also known as the Fundamental Rights Case. The Supreme Court asserted its right to strike down amendments to the constitution that were in violation of the fundamental architecture of the constitution.
