Let the efficiency of A = 1 unit Total work = 48 × 1= 48 unit From  days, A worked for  days and B worked for 6 days …...(B started the work)
Work done by A in  days
= 16/3 x 1 = 16/3 unit
Work done by B = 48 - 16/3 = 128/3 unit
Time taken by B to finish 4 times of total work =  = 27 days
Alternate method :-
In  days, A worked for   days and B worked for 6 days …...(B started the work)
B × 6 + A ×  = 48A 6B = 48A -  A 18B = 128A = B/A = 64/9
Total work = 9 × 48 = 432 units
Time taken by B to finish 4 times the same work = 4 x 432/64 = 27 days

Detailed Solution for Test: SSC CGL Previous Year Questions: Time and Work(Pipe & Cisterns)(2023-18) - 1 - Question 26

Work done by X in 2 days
= 2 × 2 = 4 units
Work done by X and Y in next 6 days
= (2 + 1) × 6 = 18 units
Remaining work = 92 – (4 + 18)
= 92 – 22 = 70 units
Let the number of days Z work = n
So, (2 + 1 + 4) × n = 70
7n = 70 ⇒ n = 10 days
Number of days for which X worked
= 2 + 6 + 10 = 18 days

Now according to the question ,X work for n days
Y for (n – 7) days and Z for (n – 8) days
n × 2 + (n – 7) × 1 + (n – 8) × 4 = 92 units
⇒ 2n + n – 7 + 4n – 32 = 92
⇒ 7n = 131 ⇒ n = 131/7 days
No of days for which Y worked = n – 7

A college hostel mess has provisions for 25 days for 350 boys. At the end of 10 days, when some boys were shifted to another hostel, it was found that now the provisions will last for 21 more days. How many boys were shifted to another hostel?  [SSC CGL 20/4/2022 (Morning)]

Detailed Solution for Test: SSC CGL Previous Year Questions: Time and Work(Pipe & Cisterns)(2023-18) - 1 - Question 29

According to the question
some boys shifted to another hostel after 10 days so food left of 15 days of 350 boys consumed by remaining boys in 21 days
⇒ Day1 × number of boys initially = Day× number of remaining boys
⇒ 15 × 350 = 21 × number of remaining boys ⇒ number of remaining boys = 250
So initially boys are 350 now remaining boys are 250
