I call this section kings of the road
because even though you may be convicted
of each one of the things listed here
and there are fines and license
suspension periods that go with that
possibly jail time that go with some of
these penalties there's also this new
improved way of punishing you and that's
where you get to pay this extra amount
just to keep your driver's license every
year for three years so the first
collection of great punishment are the
DWI convictions first time it's going to
be a thousand bucks second time you get
convicted of a DWI or your third or
fourth if you're a real professional
it's going to add up to you paying an
extra $1,500 per year then if you're
this extra special person that somehow
is incredibly drunk at a point one six
percent and is even able to find their
car after the party they will get to pay
an additional two thousand dollars per
year for three years meaning that car
ride cost them a minimum of six thousand
dollars per year then if you want to
drive on our roads and not have any
insurance much less the immediate ticket
you'll get for driving without insurance
they will also zap you with this $250
fine extra fine each year for three
years then this combination of driving
with the license that's invalid
cancelled revoked or you just don't have
a driver's license at all well you'll
get these extra gems over here and then
finally if you're what I call the
habitual reckless driver and you have
gone out and gotten yourself six points
on your driving record you can look
forward to paying a extra $100 a year
for three years plus for each additional
point you get over six you get to pay an
additional $25 hey now we're talking
about a party okay all of this adds up
to what the state calls the driver
on stability program which is sort of
ironic because it's really the driver
irresponsibility program now because
these fines are so substantial the state
has come up with ways to help you cope
with this okay they've come up with an
amnesty program an incentive program and
an indigent C program the amnesty
program would allow you to keep your
license as long as you can pay the
surcharge amount by set dates in other
words they break the payments up for you
and allow you to keep your license as
long as you keep making payments on time
the incentive program suggests that in
certain situations the surcharge amount
will be reduced if everything is paid
earlier upfront finally there is the
indigent C program that allows for
reduction in surcharge fees if you make
application and can prove your income is
around the federal poverty level of
eleven thousand five hundred dollars for
someone living on their own okay so
understand that not only if you
consistently violate the law or do
something so severe like driving while
intoxicated or with no license at all
that you will not only end up with the
immediate fines that go with those
violations you will also be paying for
the situation through these surcharges
