Creating with the Seaboard RISE - 2.6: Smart Controls Using Logic Video Lecture | Introduction to Seaboard Rise: Advance Music Production

in a previous video I configured in our
page ater to control a interesting hat
pattern with ultrabeat let's see what it
sounds like
I liked that but in my outro there's a
bit more space and when there's a more
space in the music I'd like to get a
little more rhythmically complex and we
hear this a lot and kind of trap music
we can have really fun kind of hi-hat
pattern it's kind of floating above the
music and so I'd like to be able to
change that arpeggiator rate on the fly
I could kind of move it manually and
automate it but it just we have touch
faders we have this control surface it
just makes so much sense that I would
use this to control the arpeggiator rate
so let's try it out it's gonna require
us to use smart controls and logic and
also external controller assignments
it's a little bit technical and it does
take a little getting used to but once
you get a handle on it opens up
wonderful creative possibilities smart
controls are a set of kind of macro
controls that each can control a variety
of things within a track so they can
control the instrument and also the
effects in the track to open up the
smart controls for a track you're going
to click on this button right here and
it will usually open up kind of a
default automatically created set of
smart controls for what's in the track
now we want to create our own set of
controls
so I'm going to open up the info pane
and the smart controls window and
immediately go to the settings here and
choose delete all patch mappings that'll
remove all the mappings between smart
controls and parameters within the track
next I'll go and I'll choose an
interface that works a little better for
what I'm creating and I really like to
start with the a modern synth 8 look and
mainly cuz it's just really simple 8
knobs and if I map a touch fader to
control that first knob in this with
every track by ever open smart controls
that fader is going to control a smart
control so we do this once and we have
something we can use in lots and lots of
tracks now we have to know that the the
touch faders on the Seaboard rise can be
in two separate modes when we're in this
mode is the expressive mode and we see
the lights for glide slide impress and
in this mode the faders are controlling
kind of a range of expression for each
one of those dimensions of touch if I
click the mode button again
we'll be in Mitte mode where we send
three separate MIDI CC values I'm not
really concerned exactly what they are
because we'll use a learn function to
map them first we'll have the smart
control control the arpeggiator rate so
I'll open up my arpeggiator and we'll
use a learn function which we're getting
pretty familiar with I think now so I
touch the macro control there's an
undulating kind of blue circle around it
I'll click learn and then I'll move my
arpeggiator rate and we'll see that
those two things are now associated with
each other which is perfect except at
the bottom of this macro control at the
bottom of the smart control range it's
going to be a rate of 1 1 which is a
little bit of a long time between hi-hat
hits and so it'd be nice if we went that
when that smart control is at the very
bottom that we got a more meaningful
musical rate maybe eighth notes and one
of the great things about using smart
controls as we can set a range of that
mapping so I'll send the range minimum
to be eighth notes and then we'll leave
the range maximum at 128 and now we want
to do our mapping to our touch fader to
do that I'll click on this macro control
again actually will see that it when
it's at the bottom our pecuiiar rate is
at 1/8 and we have external assignment
here at the bottom that's how we're
going to map our touch fader to control
that smart control I'll click learn
there and I'll move my touch fader and
now we'll see I'll get out of learn mode
here and we'll see that now this touch
fader is controlling that smart control
over the range we set let's hear what
this high hat pattern and the different
arpeggiator rates sounds like and the
breakdown on my song
