in the next couple videos I'm going to
be scoring a short movie and when
getting a project like this I like to
kind of improvise along with the movie
and try out different motifs and
different ideas and I find a piano
string layer is perfect for that because
a piano gives me the option to have
really specific strong rhythmic accents
and the strings can fill in for
sustaining portions to do that I'll
start in the dashboard and first set it
to the MPE mode because the instruments
I'll be using in Logic exs24 will
respond to the multi-channel data that's
sent by the Seaboard rise
so I'll set channel mode to multi MPE on
a channel range of two through sixteen
and a pitch Bend range of 48 semitones
then I'll go over to logic and here I
have a track with exs24 and I'll choose
a piano patch to start with I've been
really liking this Steinway piano too
right now let's show you what that
sounds like
now we do want to configure it to
respond to the multi-channel data but I
don't want it to bend notes as I'm
playing to kind of glide with my with my
performance I will want the strings to
glide though so let's see if we can
configure that I'll go down to the
triangle the lower left-hand corner of
the exs24 window set midi mono mode to
on with a base channel of one and I'm
going to set the mono mode pitch range
to zero now usually I set this to the
same setting that we had configured in
the dashboard but I don't want it to
glide so this in effect turns off the
pitch Bend for the patch let's try it
out now I don't get any glide which is
perfect but I will be able to get that
glide when they add the strings into the
layer let's add the strings and now I'll
create another track this will also be
exs24 I'm going to add a preset and
we'll go to the orchestral folder and
I'll go to strings and full strings plus
the Plus presets are great because they
include additional articulations like
staccato and tremolo and we'll talk
about changing articulations in a future
video with that I should have a nice
string sound
I'm going to go down to that triangle
set MIDI mode on the bass channel of one
and this time I will want the pitch Bend
range to be forty eight which is what we
had set in the Rolly dashboard and now
if I play I'll be able to line those
notes polyphonically it is responding
drastically to strike if I play hard
it's really loud and for this layer I'd
rather be really consistent so I'm going
to go to my level fader here and reduce
the via velocity range that range is
nothing and then reduce the overall
level just a little bit and so now as I
play I won't get those variations in
volume as I play with different like
levels of strike hard and gentle we get
the same exact volume which can be good
for us I do want this sound to fade in a
bit though so it layers well with the
piano will kind of swell in let the
piano have the strong attack and then
the strings kind of swell in so I'll
increase the attack time on the amp
envelope to about half and we'll notice
that the strings will now swell in and
then I'll function regardless of how
hard I hit the key waves with that I can
close up the bottom portion this
interface and I can close with my
strings and we're ready to create a
track stack so I'll shift-click on the
other track here so they're both
selected I'll right-click and I'll
choose create track stack we have two
options will choose summing because that
will create a sub mix and allow us to
send MIDI data to all the sub tracks in
the stack if I record enable the sum
I'll be able to play
the strings kind of swell in nicely kind
of filling in as the piano decays for me
I'd like the piano to be a little bit
quieter so strings are a little bit more
obvious and you can adjust the blend
between them using the volume faders on
these kind of sub tracks now one thing I
like about this patch is if I play
really hard the piano is really obvious
and the strings kind of just fill in
later but if I play quiet the strings
kind of just fade in nicely and you
don't really notice the piano so much
now I'd like to take that idea to an
extreme and make it so if I play really
quiet I have no piano at all and if I
play really hard
I have no strings at all we can set a
velocity range for each one of these
tracks in the track stack I'll go to the
first track and to the info of that
track this is the piano and I can set
its minimum velocity range to be about
15 and you can adjust this to your
playing style and I'll go to the strings
track and set its maximum velocity to
about 115 and again you can kind of
adjust this for your your playing style
and this way if I record enable the sum
and I play quite gently I'll have no
piano at all and if I play really hard
I'll get no strings at all so this way I
can kind of play along with my project I
can get the really percussive piano
parts when I want with no strings and I
can get those really gentle string
swells when I need them so I'm about
ready to watch my movie and kind of
improv along with it
