hey guys this is Emma welcome to my
Chinese class in the last class I gave
you an overview of a Chinese PE and the
tips on learning PE as I said PE is very
important as it helps you build a solid
foundation and accurately pronounce
Mandarin Chinese and move on to learn
Chinese characters sentences idioms and
so forth as we learned from a last class
a PE syllable mainly has three
components which are initial a final and
a tone sometimes initials are not
necessary I will explain it later today
I would like to introduce you guys to
the pinyin tones there are five terms in
Chinese PE first second third fourth and
a neutral tone no in tones it's very
important because words with the same
spelling in PE but the different tones
will have very different meanings for
example ma with the first at all
pronounced mama is mom but if you use
the third tone it's a ma where horse you
don't want to call your mom a horse
right another example is a papa fourth
tone which means dead but if you use
first at all ah
it means eighth you don't want to greet
your head as number eight so what I want
to emphasize is tones are very very
important let's talk about the five
terms so one by one the first tone also
known as a flight tone it's a
high-pitched and a no change or pump
when you pronounce it
let's practice of your words the word
for what it's a e a Chinese E can you
tell it's kind of long and no change
when you pronounce it John Guare means
China
here Joe it's a first atone which means
middle Joel Joel here is another example
sure it's a car in Chinese choo-choo the
second one is a rising tone from the
middle peach - all the way up let's
practice it now

cool here means country which is a
second at all remember from the middle
peach - all the way up cool cool cool
let's see another example head is a toe
in Chinese
toe toe now let's see the third tone
falling and a rising tone like when you
are writing a rollercoaster you go down
and then go up but not that scary we're
dramatic let's practice it now make war
Miss America in Mandarin here may it's a
third tone which means beautiful Mei Mei
who miss number five in Chinese and woo
it's also a third tone Oh woo first tone
is a falling tone which explains itself
falling down so in Chinese is number
four which is a fourth tone Su Su also
fun means food word meal it's also a
fourth tone fuh fuh the last way is
neutral tone which is a very light and
soft at all and has no to mark on it a
lot of times neutral tone can soften the
speaking tone for example niihama
means how are you in Chinese here ma
it's a question particle and a neutral
tone ma ma
ma again PE has the five tones and all
the tones are very important as they
distinguish different meanings
I consider five tones like riding a
rollercoaster beginning it's a flight
first a tone and then go up Sekhmet oh
and the folder and go up further Tom and
then for da for stone at the end the
writing it's slow and it's soft which is
the neutral tone okay that's all for
