Chinese class today our focus is not
going to be on Chinese language but on
Chinese cultural opportunities right
here in Oklahoma woman hi Shiva let's
get started
for me it's not surprising that there
are many Chinese or chinese-american
organizations in bigger cities such as
New York City Washington DC Los Angeles
and so forth but today I'd like to talk
about several remarkable Chinese
American organizations that are right
here in Oklahoma and doing exciting
things first I'd like to introduce you
to the Institute for us-china issues at
the University of Oklahoma the Chinese
name for the Institute is Mei Chung qin
shi Yan ji Oh su Mei is short for make
war America jo is short for Junko China
when she means relationship connections
were issues the NGO saw is Institute in
Chinese the Institute was founded in
2006 to promote China studies throughout
the state as well as at OU you as well
as to foster academic research about
us-china engagement and policy
dr. Peter Greece renowned a China expert
is the director of the Institute as well
as supporting research Chinese teaching
and learning through faculty grants and
student scholarships Institute host
regular discussions and of symposia
hosting the top policy minds the
us-china studies as well as high-level
American Chinese diplomats the Institute
also Awards a biannual literary prize
the Newman prize for Chinese literature
which prints some love the China's
the author's as well as leading critics
to Oklahoma for sever day-long
conference the award honors Harold J and
Ruth Newman whose generous donation
makes the Institute possible more yen
the winner of the 2009 Newman Prize for
Chinese literature won the 2012 Nobel
Prize for Literature that's so exciting
it was my privilege to work as a
graduate assistant at the Institute for
two years while I was at OU you and I
learned and benefited a great deal from
my time there next I'd like to introduce
you to the öyou Confucius Institute

you can be used for college work
Institute the oh you see I was
established in 2006 as an office to
support the study of Chinese as well as
to offer support to Chinese students
studying in Oklahoma it receives funding
goals from the Chinese Education
Ministry and the University of Oklahoma
in order to support both American
students of Chinese and Chinese students
studying here in Oklahoma the OU UCI has
a broader goal to reach out to people
throughout the state and endeavors to
build a strong relationships between the
people of the south central us and the
people of China the main office is
located on the Norman campus and is led
by mrs. Sharon goal the director another
organization doing exciting things in
Oklahoma is the East Asia Institute
which is affiliated with the Confucius
Institute but located at oh you Tulsa
campus the East Asia Institute is a
program that supports international
exchanges studied horse and a
professional development training
between Oklahoma schools teachers and
students and those in East Asia the East
Institute is led by dr. Claudia forehand
along with other cultural events the
Institute and Confucius Institute
supporter and outstanding annual Chinese
language immersion summer camp Startalk
in both Tulsa and Norman where Oklahoma
school students learn by speaking only
Chinese for two weeks okay
