Setting up a compact Workshop on a Budget - 2014 Video Lecture | What is 3D Printing: Basic Knowledge - IT & Software

sup guys this is Angus from makers Muse
so when I'm in conversations with people
and they find out that I like to build
and make things often they'll sort of
say you know that's really cool I'd love
to do that but I don't have any money I
don't have any room set up a workshop
it's too noisy to use power tools and
all these things and like others being
polite and don't actually really care
about making stuff or they're cheating
has a case and it kind of pisses me off
this wholesome attitude towards the DIY
movement of making stuff in which case
like I started with nothing and you know
my dad's an IT we had zero tools and so
I built all this stuff up here on my own
back since I was 15 so I thought it's a
the opportunity to age to show you how
to set up a very small workshop for not
very much money so you can get into
creating and making things really easily
and yeah so behind me is my workshop and
that's the door it used to be our store
and we don't have a garage so this was
the only room in the entire house that
could possibly use be used for a
workshop so you know I took myself to
renovate it
put all the liner in painted it and turn
it into a workshop so I'll give you a
bit of a tour
alright guys welcome to my lair so I
don't do a quick panorama of my little
workshop so it really is quite small it
looks because this is a wide-angle lens
but actually it's very tiny
and the roof you can see here that's the
roof I'm pretty short but yeah it's tiny
so regarding setting up a small compact
workshop really you need a couple of
things so your place to store your tools
you need a work area and you also need a
place to store your projects and parts
so for so my tools I now have one of
these which is an amazing tool chest but
this is only a recent addition I used to
just use buckets like that to store them
in like you know I just find this stuff
in the street you know someone took this
away and I just put my tools in so you
only need to buy what you're using for a
project don't go out and buy like a 2000
or kit with every King chrome you know
socket said it that's just a waste of
money
so the best way I found to buy tools do
an example so you want to pair of pliers
right you've gotten by really cheap pair
of pliers you know maybe 10 bucks or
something and if you use these to the
point where they get broken and go blunt
then go buy a really nice pair of pliers
you know maybe sixteen hundred dollars
because you're using that tool enough
that's going to you know it's worth
buying good one but if you go out and
buy really expensive tool straight up
you probably end up never using it so
like that's just a huge waste of money
up front same goes for PAP tools so you
know down this bottom drawer I keep my
power tools um caught this drill you can
actually just get a really cheap
cordless drill I know for a fact that
almost all the same no matter how much
you pay inside unless you got to addy
wealth or something just get a cheap one
and then if you break it somehow then
get a better one um the only time I
might recommend not doing this is an
angle grinder
don't give the chiefest angle run you
can get because these tools are pretty
damn dangerous they spin ridiculously
fast and you don't want one of these
failing and blowing up in your hand so
yeah maybe splash out a little bit for a
good angle grinder although many people
tell me that actually one grinders work
I don't believe that for a second
so yeah that's your patio tool storage
and you have a work area so this is a
little work area I've constructed for
use with electronics and 3d printing
projects and sort of small things and
it's comprised of a Kmart fold-out work
table and there are only about $30 or
something they're actually really good
they're super light I don't think is
going to last very long but they're easy
to transport and folder and then what
I've done is I've added on this sort of
pegboard some metal peg Boggs I think
the wooden ones are crap as it from
Bunnings and they have these amazing
little attachments so you pretty much
set it up to fit the sort of small hand
tools that you use all the time exactly
how you want them so you know I've got
its spatula 3d printers got pliers I've
got you know little pigs got my
multimeter gloves everything there's out
of the way ready to go
you can also map the power board to it
so this is my power board in my phone
yeah camera charger soldering iron
actually works really well so yeah it's
probably about 100 bucks worth of stuff
and you get a really nice work table
so then we have your part storage so if
you like to make stuff you are probably
a hoarder like me and you're pretty can
end up with stuff like this this is
organized so these are quite cheap
they're not the cheapest sort of metal
shelving you can get but their next step
up because I found that really cheap
ones like these are really flimsy and
crap so yeah you can get those but this
is better and then these are just little
plastic drawers and I store everything
in a sort of generalized location so
I've got motors in here I've got my
screws organized
in metric ranking if your imperial then
I'm disgusted you freaks but I do have
some Imperial because quarter inch is
still common in Australia because we
just like to you know use everything
look refined um seven sixty fourths here
though and I've got some small you know
socket stuff here just because it would
get lost in the bigger tool chest and
then the rest it becomes misc
and this is the problem that you'll come
across you'll start building projects
and then you'll be done with them and
then you'll have stuff like you know dis
borders for controlling an inkjet head
on an Arduino it's about sixty bucks
worth of electronics I'm going to throw
it away but you'll start having to store
this stuff and this is the biggest
problem with a small compact workshop
format you have to be ruthless you have
to throw crap out once you're done with
it so all this is going and the problem
is you know I'm in a residential area
this is pretty much industrial waste so
yeah it's a lot of it's game donated to
people but a lot of it's just going in a
bin and it's a sad fact but I just can't
store it it's just in the way it's in
the way for the entry under the house I
was just going to go so it's a pretty
tiny workshop and I've got a lathe in it
um this is the stupidest li largest
thing that I've actually managed to get
in here we always die gained through
that door um if you really like
machining stuff you can get tools like
this into a tiny workshop it's painful
but it actually works yeah this is a c6
Lake it's pretty pretty big it's about
160 kilos worth of lathe and the stands
probably neither extra fifty I don't
actually use it as much as I should um
so again this is a case of if you can
get away with not needing something or
using someone else's then that's best
like I could have just gone to a
friend's house and use their life but I
decided to buy alongside the money on
hand and I'm actually trying to sell it
now because it's I just don't use it
nearly as much as I need to and I need
the space so yeah so basically
that's how my little workshop works the
3d printers are a new addition these are
only recently a lot of the March minor
alone so they're going to be going off
soon but yeah so this runs tiny
it was previously just pretty much
unused little time story but I can put
it into a workshop so worst case you
live in a one-room studio apartment
somewhere in the city want to make stuff
and you have zero room you cannot do
anything like even like this still on an
excuse so even in Australia we have
hackerspaces
so Sydney we have robots and dinosaurs
which are only recently moving into our
new premises they're going to have an
awesome set of tools you know you just
join ups like a gym for nerds yeah every
monty pay a certain amount build stuff I
used to go use their 3d printers where I
didn't have on myself every other state
has their own you know even Perth has
their own Adelaide has a Fab Lab which
is like a really advanced hacker space
with massive tools and I'm super jealous
I don't know whether in Adelaide so yeah
if you're in America you'll just spoilt
for choice
they've got fab labs everywhere they've
got so many amazing hacker spaces no
excuses so if you want to make stuff the
tools are there and you can easily set
up a workshop like this for a few
hundred bucks just buy the tools you
need as you need them don't spring for
these stupidly overpriced combo sets
because they're just a waste of money
and yeah so that's about it
I use my workshop for building robots 3d
printing looking a little toy cars or
electric cars stuff like that if your
intellect ranch probably don't need you
know nearly as much space you might just
need one of these tables and you might
have maybe maybe this is a PCB etching
bath or something um
running power tools again like got the
lathe but this drill press by far one of
the most used tools I've got in here and
it's about eight years old certainly
well maybe you've had 50 bucks and I
bought it and it's a compact machine so
this room is pretty small but you have
done a lot of good things with it so I
hope that sort of helps you if you're
looking to set up a workshop you know
what
not not traps not to fall into what what
works what doesn't
um oh yeah one or something and
measuring stuff so like use rules all
the time give it to some hard drive
magnet stuck to the edge of my cabinet
this has been so handy it's unbelievable
so I go use a ruler come back just slap
it there it sticks and I know where my
rulers are at all time it's just you
know wouldn't even think I didn't even
think about that when I stuck the
magnets that I just remember hard drive
but it's proved to be really useful so
yeah if you can keep your tool organized
in one spot then you know have a great
time even your like tiny little workshop
just keep the clutter down don't be a
hoarder throw out and you'll be
fine

absolutely if you're setting up a
workshop need a sound system otherwise
you're going to go completely insane
because you need just some ambient noise
to just you know help you out when
you're working in workshops specially if
you're by yourself
it just helps so much inspire you
motivated now this I literally found
this whole thing by the side the right
someone threw this out 100 of what sony
amplified from the 1980s or something
a beautiful horizontal slider for volume
the whole thing was chucked out and i
just plug it into soundcloud or Spotify
or whatever and just run music all the
time that's just beautiful
so yeah um that's the last trick well
last tip get yourself some music I'm out
