in this video we'll talk about small
business management and in particular
line and staff organization now it's a
very straightforward class there's not a
lot to to worry about in doing this one
nonetheless
take your time make some notes stop the
video rewind and so on it's not a very
long video so it's about twenty three
seven slides long it says so let's make
a start the area we're going to start
with is this idea of line and staff
organization so we start with an
organization which have the chief
executive officer already the chairman
of the board or whatever the designation
is generally speaking CEO chief exec
executive office officer now this person
will be in charge of the marketing
manager the marketing manager will have
a section under him or herself and that
section will be composed of various
specialists within the marketing
department and support staff as well
then we have production manager and the
same idea we're going to have different
personnel within the production system
all with particular expertise and all
reporting to the production manager and
the production manager of course reports
to the CEO we have the finance manager
and again specialists underneath
distribution manager and specialists and
the hater M manager and of course
specialists now I've just picked out
five here five different functional
areas there may be more there may be
research and development which may come
under its own heading there may be an
distribution which may come under tone
heading there are different departments
and different companies for all sorts of
reasons perhaps historic reasons or
because of the nature of the product
they make and the way the distributed
may have different
sets of departments but the the logic is
the same this one is just the CEO and
the different functional managers and
then under the functional managers the
various members of staff now this
introduces us to the idea of span of
control and here we're going to talk
about the the number of subordinates the
number of people working under a
particular manager the word the work is
if the work is complex then that may
account for few subordinates and the
workers will need detailed supervision
so if there are few civilizations is
inexperienced but they also need a lot
of attention perhaps so a small span of
control perhaps a functional manager
with perhaps three or six or whatever it
is workers reported to him or her that's
the small because he or she is got to
just look after six operators or six
subordinates or whatever the number is
so if this can happen as I said if the
work is complex there could be a reason
for it and the workers could need
detailed supervision again more
one-to-one so a small number of
subordinates carer member of the
management because the management need
to be involved intensely with these
workers because of the nature of the
work or it could be the supervisor is
new and inexperienced and it's just
learning and so the CEO has only
allocated a small department just start
to give that person a chance to work
into the job so that could account
or few subordinates those those three
ideas could contribute towards
explaining why some managers have few
reporting to them now with more
subordinates well the work is that a
modest moderately challenging but more
workers can be brought in because they
don't find it too challenging just when
did moderately can challenging they're
capable of doing it some more workers
may may be brought in the workers could
be moderately proficient and in the
tasks where proficient is lost its T the
workers are are moderately proficient in
the tasks it means that the workers are
able to look after themselves
more they're more self-sufficient
they're able to deal with the issues and
if something goes wrong the chances are
they can fix it and get going again so
they don't need a lot of attention from
the manager the superior is moderately
skilled in the tasks so the the manager
the superior is the word here is the
manager is able to do all of the tasks
and the manager has a lot of experience
so the manager is able to look after a
bigger or a larger number of employees a
large number of subordinates so when
this happens departments can get bigger
and when you have many subordinates the
work is simple to carry out so very
straightforward work and the workers are
very experienced so the workers don't
have a problem in performing the tasks
the work is very simple to do the
superior is also skilled and experienced
and understands workers problems and
issues work and understands the job the
technical processes the manager is is
familiar with all of this and is able
to to deal with issues very quickly and
very efficiently in that case the
department would be very large Dan the
Stan of control would be very wide very
large so when we think of a small
department we think of inexperienced
manager generally speaking our work is
very complex and therefore only a few
can work doing this particular task and
the manager needs to be there to give
them support when the work gets easier
easier to perform more workers can be
taken on and also the manager may have
more experience so the manager is more
confident in managing more people and
with the last one the manager is very
experienced and also the work is very
easy to do and the workers are capable
of keeping production running because if
anything goes wrong the chances are it's
a very simple task to fix and they're
able to keep it running so we have
explanations for small departments
medium sized and large departments and
that's what I mean by span of control
how many workers are reporting to a
manager what is his or her span of
control and that completes it it's a
very short class very straightforward
class but important nonetheless it's
used in the literature we often meet the
term span of control now we we know what
it means and we know what determines the
span of control as well let's leave it
