addition using complementary numbers
with respect to the number five we are
in the hundreds column now you've done
the ones you've done the tens hundreds
are a piece of cake so here we go
101 plus 234 how do I make that on my
abacus 101 is retina is written with a 1
a 0 and a 1 so 1 leave that as it is
there's 101 and I'm going to add to that
234 well let's start over here ok so 200
I'm going to put it on here I'm going to
add to it exactly the way that I see it
30 well complimentary No oh yeah we're
in that section ok so that's ok so I
need to add a 4 here the complement to
the number 4 is the number 1 which means
I take that away and slide the 5 down so
101 plus 234 is 335 okay clear your
abacus let's do another one let's do it
giant number 921 921 and we're going to
do 921 plus 34 well ok
oh so we've got to do 34 this is to
complimentary numbers live so the
complement to the number 3 is 2 which
means I take away that to slide down the
5 and 4 so the complement to the number
4 is 1 and I slide down the 5 so 921
plus 34 is 955
all right here we go 421 plus 104 all
right so 420 and 1 421 plus 104 now we
write 100 for 1 is 0 and a 4
well we don't even have a 1 to add in
here so that triggers our brain we just
said all complimentary numbers I know
that I have to think about it so the
complement of 1 is 4 that means I slide
these away and put down the 5 at 0 don't
do anything here and the number for the
complement of 4 is 1 that means I slide
this down and put the number 5 and there
we have it
421 plus 104 is 525 525
ok two more and I think you will have a
grasp on this that you'll be a
compliment you'll just be you'll be
giving out compliments to all your
friends and family because and well they
may not know what you mean but you'll be
loving complimentary numbers so here we
go
651 + 224 so 651 + 224 part of this
crazy 220 Oh complement each other so 4
take away the one right now five on
there it is and that number is 875 ok
one last problem
let's do 143 143 plus 412 so over half
about we're using a number but this is a
piece of cake 412 the complement of 4 is
1
oh here we go the compliment of one is
for and the compliment of two is three
Oh what do we end up with there's an
easy number 555 so 143 plus 412 is 555
