How to Draw Tips - The 5 Ways to start a drawing (Part 1) Video Lecture

okay guys so before I actually start to
tour I just want to share with you guys
that um I have some pretty exciting
stuff that's coming up I'm going to
because I know a lot of you been asking
me about the book and I'm going to be
doing a series of books on a different
subject just like I have on my youtube
channel but this first one is going to
be I think the most important one
because it's going to be for you know
the beginner intermediate advanced
wherever place you think you will be I
am going to be creating this is like the
nuts and bolts of drawing with pen and
ink pretty much all right so I'm going
to be putting in a lot of the
information you see on the YouTube
channel but of course you know I'll
really lay out the concepts and it will
really be like a reference guide for
drawing with pen and ink and this is
it's the one that I've put the most
energy in and I think I think it's
really going to be a wonderful product
so I'll give you guys you know news and
updates on that as much as it develops
I'm looking to really have it ready by
by at the top of June so hopefully I'll
be able to have maybe I may need to have
a Kickstarter project to really like you
know push it up there as far as like
getting all the printing and publishing
and stuff done but I'll keep you guys
updated with all of that stuff alright
now let's get into this tutorial so this
tutorial and I and I really thought
about um I guess I'll give a shout-out
to uncle raggy for this one um he's been
asking me about you know how would he
start his drawings and so on and a
couple people have asked me as well so I
figured okay I'm going to do a tutorial
where I'm going to show you different
ways how you could start a drawing and
I'm going to use and this applies to
just about any subject but I'm going to
use a I'm going to use the figure as a
way of illustrating this alright so I'm
going to show you five ways that you can
start a drawing okay and this you know
these five ways are pretty much showing
you five different approaches or five
concepts or ways you can you know go
about starting a drawing and this
appliance as I said to join just about
anything okay
so I'm going to show you one is going to
involve blocking in you know going and
these are techniques that I've showed
you before but I guess I'll just you
know show you here in one place so the
first is going to be about blocking in
we're almost like a
and outside to in going from out in and
the next would be like a maybe like an
inside out using a line of action okay
or like bit going from inside out so it
would the figure you're going from the
internal anatomy and then you going
outside okay and then I'm going to use
simple shapes but I'm going to use two
different approaches I'm going to use
simple 2d shapes in 2d and simple 3d
shapes okay you'll see what I mean and
then last but not least we'll just be
I'll show you another technique we can
just go from part to part now a lot of
people tend to do that but that's my
least favorite okay and with all of
these have in common is that it's
important to practice going from simple
to complex okay and that's what you'll
see that I'll do here so let's start
with I'm gonna try to do one two three
four five okay so let's do the first one
this is showing you how you block in the
figure and as I said this can apply to
just about anything so of course you're
starting with like a general a general
shape alright so let's say you have
something like this and when you're when
you're drawn like this you're thinking
about you know the what is the what is
the overall shape that contains this
whole thing see and it can be something
as general as that see and then you're
going to go in and start carving in so
it's really like a sculpting process
okay you're doing a little bit like that
you're you're gradually sculpting and
then getting more and more specific and
I showed you what you torille on this
before see you're carving and carving
and gradually getting more and more
specific
you
okay so basically all I did was start
from a general shape and then started
carving in and got you know got a little
bit more and more specific right so
that's going from outside in or like
carving that's how I like to think about
it right and I did a tutorial on
blocking in that's pretty much the
approach that this is about with the
next approach it's more like going from
are they okay let's do the opposite
you're going from inside out so if
you're going from inside out say we
sketch in like um so we sketch in like a
line of action cuz you're looking
internally now okay so um so we have
something like that alright see that
little line of action there alright line
of balance
so basically we're thinking off okay the
rib cage you know we have the rib cage
there and then thinking off the backbone
and then here comes the pelvis okay of
course you're going to have the bone
there this is the femur and then it goes
up like that okay because we're thinking
of the same thing like this well now
we're thinking internally and then from
here it's just a matter of building on
to this internal armature or skeleton we
have here right so of course it's almost
like you're thinking of in this so we
put the humerus here all right so now
it's a matter of just connecting the
dots as I've done my anatomy tutorial so
of course this may be relevant to your
drawing this may be more relevant to
drawing the figure than it may be to you
know drawing something else where you
know you're not thinking about Anatomy
so much but this is just another
approach that you can take to you know
creating your drawings see so I'm
thinking of where does you know where do
things fit here C&S that's the approach
amusing
see this will ride just over the crest
of the pelvis just like that
you
now let's let's try another way so that
is going blocking and this is going
inside out and now let's use a we're
going to use simple simple forms or
simple shapes but we're going to use
simple 2d shapes in this case alright so
now you're pretty much simplifying what
you see in two simple flat shapes all
right and it's very similar to blocking
in but the thing is you're not thinking
of a hole per se you're thinking of
these small shapes that connect
everything right
you
all right so this is especially used
useful if you're if you're thinking
about drawing shadow shapes and focusing
on things in a flat diagram in kind of a
way you're thinking of two-dimensional
just flat shapes all right now I'm going
to do it now using three-dimensional
shapes simple three-dimensional shapes
are simple more 2d this is now more 3d
okay so I'm thinking more structurally
here okay now you can start from this
and build to that or you can incorporate
all of these at the same time and
actually that's the best approach that
I'd really encourage being aware of all
these different ways of approaching a
drawing and incorporating all of them at
the same time right now let's go from
simple 2d shapes now this could even be
split in two because I could also or
spit in a variety of ways because I may
for example start with simple block like
shapes or I can start with simple
rounded shapes or I can use a
combination of both okay and so it's
really up to you but I'm just going
since the the structure of the pose or
the figure is more conducive for using
block like shapes that's what I'll use
and I'll incorporate like for example
here seems a lot more cylindrical so
I'll use cylindrical shapes for that but
for the most part phenyl is a torso for
example if I am a figure of a woman I
may use more rounded shapes like an egg
would be more appropriate for the torso
instead of using a block as I'm going to
do here we're going to use a simple
block like shape for constructing this
one so here I'm thinking of this is the
front plane I'm using a block here okay
you
see so what I'm doing in this case I'm
thinking of the you know rectangular
block here I'm just thinking three
dimensional see this is where you start
thinking about planes okay this goes
around it like that this is going up
down up down up down
that's I'm thinking of this this goes
across and then down then up and then
back see this is how I'm thinking about
this this is pointing outwards this is
pointing forwards and so on this is
pointing forwards see this is faint
pointing this way you know what's behind
there is paint is pointing back see this
is this is how I'm I'm envisioning this
one facing side forward side forward and
so on this is pointing up and then down
up and then you know you're thinking in
a very geometric way when you're drawing
in this sense scene it's very useful
whenever you this is very important for
creating a sense of a volume okay with
just about anything that you're drawing
see here it's not as built-up because
I'm thinking more internally how things
connect to whatever and see here if any
you know the anatomy is is taking you
know prominence here and in here it's
more about chiseling in but eventually
ultimately they all end in the same
place see and that's a key thing to
remember now the last and my least
favorite way is by starting part by part
so you may start like you know like that
and you eventually start building and
you know building more and more and so
on now this is my least favorite part a
lot of people draw like it's like
drawing the portrait you starting with
the eyes and there's nothing wrong with
that now the thing is though is that the
key to drawing like this is that you
have to make sure that you are staying
abreast with using a particular part as
your unit of reference so in other words
say I'm I'm starting to draw this and I
draw here first right I have to use this
measurement from here to here like for
example from here to here as a unit of
reference so that means as I build the
rest of the drawing I'm comparing the
measurement of everywhere else to here
so in other words if I'm going to draw
the shoulder I have to compare the
length of the shoulder to this distance
to make sure that everything stays in
proportion as the drawing develops if
not what you're going to have happening
is the drawing will get
disproportionately larger
disproportionately smaller it will it's
easy to fall out of proportion but when
you use these approaches either of these
approaches you start with the whole and
then you start fleshing things out and
the good thing is you keep all of your
drawing in proportion so you've
established the overall aspect ratio the
overall dimensions and size and scale if
you're drawing already so you don't have
to worry about oh wow the hand getting
too big or something like that happening
okay you can just stay within the
confines of what you've already
established see so it really takes a lot
of stress off you instead of drawing
part by part just like like this but you
know I would say it's good practice to
learn to start your drawings from either
of these techniques and eventually you
will settle into whichever one to choose
is more in tune with your style okay but
learn as much as you can and then
eventually you can you know branch off
and use anything else that you think is
like you know your way of drawing of
course you know remember please check

incorporate all these different
techniques and the same drawing all
