and one of the main things I always
encourage anyone who's starting out with
pen and ink to learn how to do is to
shade basic forms that's one of the most
important things you can start out with
just learning how to define the volume
of these you know basic shapes like
spherical form a block form of
cylindrical form the the prison-like
form the cone or anything like that
basic geometric forms even in the same
way like when you're earning your draw
or shade and pencil one of the most
important things you can learn to do is
to draw basic shapes because in the same
sense the more complex things that
you're going to be drawing are gonna be
based on visualizing them in terms of
simple forms like these anyway so I
would advise that you know you generally
start out with learning how to
convincingly portray the volume of these
little basic forms it's very very very
very important and very useful so in
this tutorial I'm just gonna show you
just some basic type of strokes you can
use to you know render these forms and
ink unless I said it's very important
because complex forms whether you
drawing someone a person or an animal or
will in most cases be based on your
understanding of these basic forms
alright because you interpret complex
forms the volume of complex forms in
terms of simple geometric forms all
right like you you'd think of the tip of
the nose as a ball or a sphere or
something like that or a similar shape
and you don't have to worry so much
about getting everything perfect right
you're really just trying to portray the
volume of the form so here I'm just
pretty much just I'm getting the
outlines done I've already laid them in
with pencil just to get the proportions
on point and then I'm gonna go in and
render these
you
today we are so we can establish already
that the light source is on the left and
we're trying to trade the volume of
these forms I'm going to use primarily
the the 0.1 and the 1 and the the point
zero zero five so these are the three
pens I'm going to use so I start out
with the point one okay we'll start with
the permit since it's to the left so
pretty much what I'm gonna do is just
lay in just separating the light from
shadow here and notice I'm trying to
make strokes pretty consistent
I just separate the areas of light and
shadow pretty clearly right
and this believe me this is perhaps the
best practice you could get and um you
know learning to master pen and ink
even with the wood I'm gonna give the
wood a little bit um texture in a little
bit so it actually looks this block so
it actually looks like a wooden block
but right now I'm just concerned with
conveying its volume by differentiating
the values of each side so this would
pretty much be the bright in the lit
side this would be the side and shadow
and this will be the side that's you
know a litte bit as the one in shadow
alright see I'm using single strokes
here I'm gonna go in and develop these
further right now it's just about
creating that distinction
and if you can't make one complete
sweeping stroke from one side to the
next that's fine once the strokes are
pretty consistent that's what really
matters
you
and then that's pretty much the idea you
know it's um
and that's pretty much it you know as I
said just make sure you to spend your
time initially and building up the
volume of the forms and then afterwards
you add the details but this is perhaps
the best practice you could ever get
with learning how to shade and pen and
ink start with the basics always go from
simple to complex basic forms to complex
forms
