so in this tutorial I'm gonna show you
something that is very important when
you're beginning in in pen and ink
especially with like I've mentioned
before about using understanding and
mastering the basic types of strokes now
this involves mastering gradation right
so now this involves being able to
create a value scale and also how to
blend a value this is very very very
important right believe me
it's painstaking and it's a little
annoying to practice the basic stuff but
that's where you should start right you
practice every other skill in life going
from basics so it's the same with
drawing but it's worth the patience now
what I've set up here is a little chart
I'm gonna use to make my value scale no
the second drawing or even in painting
you create a value scale of values right
because a lot of times what makes
something realistic is how effectively
you can convey the difference in value
is not so much about details and whatnot
right so like with any value scale I'm
gonna have a progression of values from
black to white
alright so pretty much this end block
I'm just gonna use six values because I
think if you can be able to distinguish
six values as pretty much all you need
anything beyond that is like none
necessary okay is good and it seems to
avoid unnecessary six is enough alright
because you have to basically you have
two sets of deep values two middle
values and two light values and that's
pretty much enough now the thing is
we're going from black alright so what
I'm gonna do is you can use different
degrees of of darks so I can either use
a solid black or I can build my black
that allows the light to pass through so
for example I made this crosshatch over
and over until it eventually it gets to
a point where I'm comfortable but it
still allows some of the white of the
paper to pass through or I can just use
a solid black and just you know like
this now that can vary according to your
use but I think in creating consistency
throughout your drawing is good when you
develop your blacks with layers of cross
hatching or layers of whatever the
strokes you use instead of just using a
solid black because
the solid black is as good and useful
but it can be a dangerous thing if not
using the right way alright so um let's
just start out by creating one layer of
strokes alright so basically as I say
you can use different strokes but what
I'm gonna use is just Street
cross-hatched lines all right for my
value scale so that's another challenge
you can make for yourself you can create
a value scale using different strokes
you can see you sniffles for example
going across you can use you know
flowing lines curving lines whatever you
want to do you know it's the more
practice the better because the more
versatility you have alright so there is
my first layer alright as I say this
will be white and the lightest value so
I'm leaving that untouched now we can
start pinning in other layers so this is
the second layer of strokes I'm putting
in and as I had mentioned in another
about The Strokes tutorial you can you
can have variations of each stroke has
its own variation so I can I could vary
the size of the lines of thickness the
direction the spacing here I'm just
using a pretty even spacing for for the
lines and I'm being consistent
throughout you know if you notice
there's no major variation between them
so for this black I'm actually I'm gonna
make one of them really solid black and
the other one based on I'll build it up
so you can see the difference so this
one I'm just gonna fill it in um okay so
notice I'm I wish each layer I'm going
progressively one step to the left so
this one has one layer this one has two
this one is gonna have three
you
okay so here you see um I pretty much
just Creed this value scale using um
this is one two three four five six
I've almost created a six and A six B
because this one has solid black and
this one has a black based on cross boat
built up layers of cross hatching so as
I said they're both useful but it's just
a matter of which one you use to do what
you know I generally use my build up
blacks a lot and I save the solid blacks
for certain hair is like accents and so
on I think you have to be very careful I
use solid blacks but this is pretty much
a good practice um and I would do this
over and over if I'm learning you know I
would advise anyone learning to to to
you know shame with pen and ink to
practice this over and over and practice
using it with different variations and
can build a value over and over by
keeping the lines spaced out and that
gives you a different effect you can go
over and over it build a different
effect and that's completely different
than if you keep the lines really close
and build over and over see it has a
different character you know so
depending on whatever your shading you
can create a different feel you know so
now with this as far as um you know
creating values I'm just gonna do a
short little area here gradating from
one value to well a deep value to the
next so with this it's pretty much just
keeping in mind those variations that I
told you about keeping say for example
when it gets to the lighter areas the
lines would be more spaced out so
eventually it gets to white alright and
in these areas they're closer and the
deep views will be closer and more
layered and thicker and I guess the
light areas your pen should really just
be barely touching the surface you can
even use staples at this point you know
little dots
right and then of course you just keep
building this si you you shade in in pen
you have to be very mindful of those
things because it's not like pen so you
can go over and you know when she make a
mark that's pretty much it so it's
better to put less and then build over
that instead of going too deep and then
you can't undo it that's another reason
why it's important to work in pencil
before say at this point I'm pretty much
just doing something like this you know
kind of tapers now all right and that's
