how to paint bearded iris FULL TUTORIAL Video Lecture | Master the Art of Watercolour Painting (English) - Art & Craft

hi there Lindsay ur the frugal crafter
and I have another fun watercolor
painting lesson for you today I tried to
figure out how to change the record time
on my camera so it would go longer than
20 minutes but I couldn't figure it out
so if you have a samsung h 90 camera and
you know how to make it record longer
than 20 minutes and you want to share
the love then leave a comment or email
me and let me know what to do I went all
through the settings I couldn't figure
it out but anyway we can get this done
in less than 20 minutes the first thing
we're gonna do of course is sketch and
I'm gonna sketch it on white paper with
a marker but you'll want to sketch it on
your watercolor card with a pencil or
you can sketch it on scrap paper and
then transfer your design with a
graphite paper if you wish so let me
grab a marker and let's get drawing so
I'm drawing this larger then then my
card so it will be nice and easy to see
for you guys I'm going to start with
this front petal here I'm drawing it
upside down so it'll be right side up
for you hopefully it'll uh it'll turn
out all right front petal there and do
the two top petals and I like to make my
leaves kind of my petals kind of fancy
and oh I don't know if roughly kind of
because irises have that lovely roughly
look to them don't worry that you don't
know how to draw don't be like well I
might as well not try because I don't
know how to draw really don't let lack
of drawing skills dissuade you from
trying this because look at this what
are we doing not if you say you can't
draw a straight line well look at this I
don't see any straight lines here do you
now and we'll need to leave little
spaces out for where the beards on our
irises are and so if you're drawing with
a pencil you can go in and erase if you
need to and I'm just going to draw the
this the kind of tip of the flower where
it comes in
there are another bud coming up over
here none of my cards I've done with
this iris the sketch looked the same
every time I do it it's a little bit
different and you need to pause the
video then you can and catch up on the
sketch and then we're going to go ahead
and we are going to do our painting so
go ahead and pause it now if you need to
and then we're going to start painting I
have sketched this out onto a watercolor
card already I'm going to move it over
here move my palette over a little bit
more so you can see as it mix my colors
and we're using a couple different
things today we're going to use a piece
of paraffin wax I used a knife and I
just kind of cut a few edges sharp just
paraffin just you know canning wax or a
white crayon or a bold hung candle and
we're also going to use a piece of
credit card that we've cut down whenever
you get an old gift card or credit card
it's all done with you don't need it
anymore slice it up and keep them for
watercolor painting it's the best tool
and it's free you will not find a better
tool for making detailed lines and a
credit card alright so first thing going
to do is take our wax and if you notice
the white on this card we've got this is
kind of batik looking effect to these
ruffles and that's what we're going to
do so try not to be perfect you're just
going in and you're scraping some some
of this wax across I added a couple
grasses to my my sketch here on this one
looked a little blah so I just added a
few grasses
I've grown irises before so I know what
they're the grasses look like so I just
threw some in so that's where your you
know personal observation comes in you
can you cannot add things you know to be
true about the different things that you
see you sketch and draw alright so I
don't want to go too crazy because if I
put too much wax in there then my paint
is not going to stick at all this wax
will resist the paint all right so then
I'm going to use a round brush I'm using
I think this is a number number five use
whatever you have and I'm gonna wet a
few of the petals you don't have to get
right up to the edge but get pretty
close I like a concentration of color
along the edges and I'm just going to
what a few pedals that aren't too close
together because I won't have to worry
about the colors running into each other
actually I can probably wet just about
all of them because they are spaced
pretty far apart if you have any places
where you have underturned petals leave
those dry for now because we want to go
in later and and add a different
concentration of color probably a little
bit lighter so they stand out all right
so I've got those petals all wet and
then I'm going to use a premade purple
because it's a little bit brighter and
clearer because it's a dye base color if
you don't have pre-made purple you can
mix your alizarin crimson and your your
ultramarine blue and make a nice purple
that way the benefit to mixing those
colors is they'll they'll tend to lift a
little bit better than the pre-made
purple but the pre-made purple is just
super super vivid concentrating my
colour at the edges and letting the
water carry it throughout the drawing
you'll notice where it comes near the
wax it is going to resist the colour and
give us that lovely batik look so see
this is easy guys we're just kind of
dabbing a brush in along the edges and
letting the water do the work I think
that's the key with watercolors let the
water do the work people say that it's
the hardest medium to learn I don't
think that's the case I think you just
need to leave it alone and let it do its
thing now to make this a little bit
interesting a little more interesting
I'm going to add a little moth which is
more of a pinky purple if you don't have
that add a little bit more crimson
that's fine I'm just going to add that
here and there just to give it a little
bit of lovely interest notice I'm
avoiding the area where the beard is
going to be because I don't want to have
to lift that out to put yellow in
because these colours not going to lift
all that easily now while this is wet
this is very important and another
reason you work quickly and you don't
fuss with it because we're going to have
to
and add some of the veining and we do
that with our credit card scraper and
I'm telling you you could not if this
tool is your sale you probably spend a
lot of money on it because it works so
good
and honestly I rarely ever do a card
without the credit card scraper I keep a
whole um container of it every time I
get done with a gift card they asked if
I want to keep it and I keep it I cut it
up and it goes in my um my little
container of scrapers or it goes right
in my watercolor box
I can scrape right over the wax you're
ending really nice fine lines go from
the edge of the pedal inwards towards
the center from the edge of the pedal in
the direction of the pedal and this know
exactly where to put those veins and the
direction of the pedal just comes with
practice comes with observation once you
start painting you'll observe a lot more
about the world around you it's just
done become second nature
alright now I want to show you how to
avoid blooms um have a paper towel and
take the same brush that you're painting
lid anywhere you have a puddle you blot
your brush off here and you just kind of
set it in the puddle and that's going to
soak up the extra water and that makes
it so that you don't end up with harsh
roughly edged splotches in the middle of
your painting while your paintings
painting is still wet if you want to add
a little bit more color on the edges you
can because if it's still pretty wet if
it's still if it's starting to dry on
you then you'll want to wait I feel like
I needed a little bit more intense color
and I didn't have any color on this
pedal in the center that I'd already wet
so I want to get that in there right now
and go in again with my my scraper if
you're painting along right now while
you're watching the video and you feel
like I'm rushing go ahead and pause it
and and come back when you're when
you're being already at the next step
don't feel like you have to rush or you
know you might even just want to watch
it and then do it on your own since
those pedals are still pretty wet I can
go in and add a little bit more color
around the edges but you don't don't do
too much
and less is more probably when you're
starting out - all right when I look
that dry and um
I'm gonna go over to this leaf right
here if you Drew and he leaves on there
go ahead and do this if not then you can
uh you can just watch while I color
these in again I'm going to wet the
blade of grass already called it's a
delete for the flower but it's pretty
much just like a long grassy shape and
I'm going to go in and add a little bit
of cadmium yellow and you'll notice a
lot of times well at least the way I
paint I let the paper at the paint mix
on the canvas a lot or on the paper
that's why wet the petals first I get a
little bit more concentration if I want
to define an edge I just go in with the
darker color just paint it right along
the edge I'm going to do its thing and
also I try to incorporate other colors I
plan on using I know I'm going to use
some yellow ochre in here so I can just
go ahead and throw the yellow ochre in
there were bad I can go in painting dry
too if I have a lot of paint on my brush
and I want to waste I can go in and do
another petal dry my dog is snoring out
if you can hear that gee that might be
right now snoring I'm a nice little nap
and I'm gonna go ahead and paint the
bottom parts of these buds here the the
bottom part of the flower and the other
bud next to it
what should see that's what I had I had
those two buds and I had the flower but
the way they were kind of lined up it
was two matching disinteresting so
that's why I went ahead and added the
grasses so I'm adding some yellow ochre
to get that papery look of the petals
and I just love the way the paint looks
as it starts to kind of flood around
there some SAP green and when one of my
favorite water colors it's just shades
of water colors such a lovely fresh
bright green but it's not unnatural
looking there's some of that in there
now I'm going to be browning this up but
I'm not going to use brown the cool
thing about a painting is to use what
you've already introduced into your
color palette since I know that yellow
the yellow ochre added to my purple is
going to make some natural brown I can
just go ahead and add that right in
there
and that will kind of brown up what I've
already got going on and I want to get
the onion a skinny look like I have here
of the that kind of paper 8 area that's
under the flower so I'm just going to go
ahead and add some streaks with my
credit card now why this adds those dark
streets is be streaks is because it's
actually damaging your paper it's you're
getting in there and you're actually
scraping your paper so if I was to go
over with another layer it's going to
settle into those grooves and it's going
to make them darker depending on how
much sizings in your paper by scraping
you're actually making it lighter if we
look here I'll bring that up a little
bit closer here we've got darker lines
because the paper was wetter when I
scraped here that paper was drier and
it's pushing the paint away and giving
me lighter lines so it just um you'll
get different effects and the thing I
just love is you're always surprised I'm
always surprised I've been painting
watercolor I started taking watercolor
lessons when I was a young child I was
very lucky I lived across the field from
an artist
mrs. Turner I actually see her sometimes
at different painting events and she
allowed me to she taught me and um and I
was so fortunate because I could just
wander across the the the field the corn
field on art days and and she would
teach me and she was an excellent
teacher and I was so lucky that I got
that experience as a child and not if I
can help anybody else you know learn and
enjoy then I that's what I hope to do
with these videos if you find that you
want a little bit more challenging

anybody's interested in purchasing those
they're three bucks and and there's a
lot of technique but I would still urge
you to watch the videos too because you
will get you'll get to see the the
painting techniques instead of just just
see the photos you actually get to see
the techniques here on the videos and
these are free so you know you can watch
it while you're sipping your coffee in
the morning notice how I just let the I
let the paint do its thing there you can
see where I went out of the lines in my
wax and you can see that it got on the
UH he got on the blade of grass there
not a big deal but and see how good that
wax works there we go I could probably
dig that out with a knife if I wanted to
but I kind of like having that
spontaneity in my work this is just a
car guys it's going to be mailed off I
don't need to worry about it too much
now we've got some little underturned
petals there so let's go in and paint
those I think I can go right in on the a
dry paper just with some nice juicy
paint what are we at fourteen minutes
we're doing all right we're going to
finish this in twenty minutes under
twenty I think go in there just paint
those don't forget to use your credit
card to scraper I get to turn this
around for a second part of this drawing
isn't making sense to me right now off
there we go
so I'm painting upside down so I have to
turn it around once in a while to see
what back I'm down a little more
concentration of color right up there
right next to where I know there's going
to be some some yellow and with that a
little bit darker there you can also put
some of the vane lines in with your
brush but hold your brush see I'm
holding mine straight up and down it's
making a 90-degree angle of the paper
that's how you will get your finest
lines out of your brush no matter what
size you're using you'll get the finest
lines by using your brush at a 90 degree
angle
I'm like
you would do like Chinese calligraphy
and I try to drag my streaks from the
edge of the petal to the center because
that way my lens will get skinnier as
they are pulled in I won't do too many
of these just a few and any of these
under turn petals that you painted you
can um go ahead and paint those in now I
would make them a little bit lighter
than the other side just so they stand
out and if you get them too dark just
dab it with it with the tissue it's no
big deal ain't no big thing
dab it with a tissue and let's just take
a little bit of that under there now we
could put some of the yellow in I'll
turn it back or right-side around for
you I just had to see what tech was
going on with that picture
didn't look quite right a little more
yellow cadmium yellow I'm just gonna dab
in the beards now that looks a little
too bright and a lemony to me that's CAD
yellow medium so it's almost a very
neutral so I'm actually gonna go in with
my yellow ochre and I'm gonna dab a
little bit in there just to warm it up a
little bit more and um if you find some
areas if you feel like you need to make
a little better transition between the
stock and the bud and the actual petals
you can add just a little bit of grain
anywhere you can see an underside with
petal don't would you crazy with it
because it will muddy up your picture if
you do too much of it but a little bit
here and there we'll just add a little
bit of harmony and really that's about
it if you want to add some spattering go
for it
I like the spattering so I'm going to
throw a little in there but I'm going to
turn this around cuz I like a little bit
more spattering towards the bottom use
any of the colors that you've used
already but they're all they're all fair
game I tend to use colors I haven't used
as much just to kind of add a little
more balance the wetter your brushes the
more the thicker the spatters you'll get
and if you don't like this you don't
have to do it this is completely
optional I know like some of my viewers
have said Lindsay
fine until you start splattering then it
was just you lost me
but you know that's completely I'd like
to some bigger spatters there so in
China there we go
and of course on your work I know I'm
usually out of time before we get to
have finer names to our pictures so put
your initials in or your full name or
whatever in the date I'm just going to
put my initials here so I'm kind of out
of space do l um
w13 and um there we have it we have a
fun watercolor card that took us I don't
know 15 minutes to paint very easy there
look at that you drew it you painted it
you're good to go
