Easy 3 Color Watercolor Sunset Video Lecture | Master the Art of Watercolour Painting (English) - Art & Craft

Hi there! Lindsay here, the Frugal Crafter. And today we're going to do a very quick and easy
watercolor painting. This is perfect for beginners or anybody
that just wants a watercolor project
that's not gonna take too long. So what
I'm doing is that I got - apparently - dirty
fingers, because I'm getting smudges all over my
cards but we're just not gonna worry about that.
What do I have all over? I don't know what I have all over my hands.
My goodness gracious, I've got mod podge all over my hands.
I've been working on a big horse halloween costume. I'll have the video on that in a few days but...
Yeah, so that would explain the smudges
Well, not really, mod podge is clear. I have
no idea what is on my fingers.
Who knows! We're going to start painting
anyways, because you know, just piece of paper. Don't worry about it.
I'm gonna start with clear water and a 1 inch flat and
I'm gonna wet my entire paper. Look at
that, some of those smudges are going away.
Wonders never cease.
Goodness, I got a big wound too. See my
thumb wound? I wounded myself cutting duct tape the other day.
I really shouldn't be allowed around sharp objects in the craft room.
Alright, we're gonna use a little ultramarine blue
Just gonna pull some out onto my palette, this is just my Cottman watercolor paints.
Nothing too fancy or high end, and I'm
going to add some of that up here to the top.
This is just a watercolor card, size 5x7
Go ahead and make it bigger though, if
you want to do a bigger picture go right ahead.
So I'm putting some at the top and some at the bottom, because I'm gonna have a scene with water
And this picture actually comes from the website Paint My Photo.
It is a painting by Gina Wood, and I will post a link to it.
So you can go check it out, I really can't recommend that site enough.
There's so many wonderful photographs on there. I'm getting a little bit of alizarin
crimson. You can use of any sort of a
cool red here and that's going to go
there in the middle, and I'm leaving a
little bit of a space because I don't
really want mixing just quite yet, and
I'm going to pull it into the water area as well.
I'm going a little light here, but you
want to be careful you don't get too
light because it's going to
lighten up on you. That's kind of what
watercolor wants to do.
I'm making a big horse costume. I'm kind
of excited my daughter wanted to be a horse.
So that's what I'm working on. I got this
cadmium yellow so it's kind of like a
warm yellow. You can use gamboge if you don't have cadmium. That's going right in the center here.
I do want it a little bit darker because my
paper is wet and as it dries it's going to get lighter.
I'm pulling some of that down into
what's going to be my water area and
it's okay if it mixes with some red and
gets a little orangey. That's absolutely fine.
Alright, now I think I will kind of
give it a little bit of orangeness to the
sky while it's still wet and it's going
to blend. Alright, like here.
Gotta take a little painting time.
Sometimes when I'm in the middle of a
project that takes a long time, like my
horse costume that I've been working on for
a couple days already. That's a long time
for me, I'm getting a little burned out so it's
like okay I gotta go do something else.
I gotta paint something. I'm mixing a little bit of the ultramarine
and my my crimson together. Make it a
little bit of purple, I wanna get kind of
like a purple cloud in there.
I need a little more blue. I like to use a
big brush when I'm starting out because
it keeps me loose.
It keeps me from getting too much too
bogged down, worried about the details.
A few purpley clouds, some sunset
clouds. Gosh, there has been some beautiful
sunsets these days
Oh, I don't know what it is, must be something with the fall time and the clear conditions.
Such pretty sunsets.
Alright, at this point, maybe I'll take
a little bit of that blue and put it up
here near where the horizon
line is gonna be, up here.
My voice is a little froggy, this is the first time I've really talked today. I've been quiet!
Do you believe it? I am though, when I'm
down here working in my studio
on a larger project and quiet
I gotta make up for that guys, you
might want to just hit that little mute button there.
Ok, now I'm going to try this with
my hair dryer, or heat tool, whatever you have.
Or just leave it alone for ten minutes. And we'll be back to finish it up.

So I'm going to show you how to make this black and what I did was - and I'll show you, cause you might think that
I'm kidding you. We're going to mix the three colors we already used. And yo're gonna mostly
use blue
We're going to mix our red, yellow, and
blue together to make black.
So you mostly use blue.
Ok, and you don't want very much water so make sure you wipe the extra
water off on the side of your water
container. Then you can use some red.
We need more blue because you can see how it's really red now. And we're going to
use some yellow, but again I'm telling you
now we're gonna need more blue.
And when you are mixing black, if you get a lot more yellow, you'll notice that it will
get kinda brown.
I've been kind of grayish brown there.
So you just keep adding your colors and
trying not to introduce too much water
until you get a nice dark black color, so
it's going to be kind of like a dark
purpley black. But I just wanted to show you, I mixed that already there. So, there.
I want you to try that. I want you to practice it. There's only three colors in this painting.
If you do get frustrated, you could go
ahead and use the Payne's gray, but I just
wanted you to kind of have the
information. But look how nice and dark it
looks there. And it's gonna match because it's colors we've already used.
So what I'm doing is I'm just kind of
roughing in
and this kind of like a little land area
here kinda like a little island.
Just kind of dabbing it in.
I also want something up here, over by
the horizon line, but I want it lighter,
so I'm going into this -
- uh, wow I can't talk! Going into this lighter puddle over there, adding a little more
water, and I'm just going to pull it straight
across
I gotta tip it up to myself a little bit,
because I can't really see. That's flat down
like that as well.
There we go. Let's pull it across in the
background.
You know, I think I might block that off a
little bit, because... well, my paper towels are all the
way across the room
Alright, we're just gonna leave it
because I don't want to go across the room
and get them.
So, there we go. It'll dry light enough, I'm pretty sure.
And we'll want our little credit card scraper, which, heavens to Betsy, I can't seem find either. I know I got one back here.
Anybody still there? Probably not. So I'm gonna use my little credit card scraper here to
pull some tree branches and stuff
out of this area of a ill-defined mass
and then I want to actually add some
reflections in the water.
So I want to put them down here kind of...
A little bit darker.
And I'm just gonna drag them down.
I'm not finished with that yet
but i just wanted to get this in the
water here before I got too carried away.
And then, I'm gonna take this brush here.
We're going to use this dagger striper a
bit today I'm going to do is actually
pinch it so I spread and fan
apart the bristles, and I'm
just gonna stick it a little bit so it
looks a little bit more watery
Now, this brush is kinda cool. It's called a dagger striper. When it's
loaded with water - look at that - and
paint, getting this really nice fine point.
So let's say we'll put some branches - like maybe some shrubs growing here on the on the shore.
Words escape me today. No, they
don't escape me, they *elude* me
They're escaping too and I don't know where they went to, but what are you gonna do.
See, I can twist and get double
lines or I can go straight and get these
really really fine grasses or branches I
think they're branches, I think this is like some
shrub. We'll put that there. Maybe a little bit over here too. Pull some of that up there.
And I like it because it's very random
looking, very natural, and that's
hard for people to do, to get something
that's loose and natural-looking. We want
to kind of control it sometimes, and
that's really not what we want,
what we ought to do.
I'm going to switch to my round to dab
on a few random leaves there.
Ok.
And I want to use this dagger up here in my little island. My own private island.
Wouldn't that be nice!
Gonna drag up some little trees here. This is autumn, right?
Maybe it's winter. I think this was a
winter photo, actually.
This isn't the highest quality
brush, dagger striper. I actually had a better
one, but this one was right handy, so I
grabbed it. And still, they all
do a pretty good job. I think the
other one I have is a little Cornell and
that's a really nice one.
It's quite popular with - well, it always
popular with marine artists. But it's
popular with decorative painters too - and I have found that brushes that are
marketed for decorative painters are
usually pretty good and they're usually
less expensive than the ones
marketed for watercolorists and they're
often - they often work just as well, so if
you want to...
You know, expect to pay a couple bucks
at least, but still, it's not going to be
as much as what we normally are used
to paying
I'm just pulling all into that. You see
how I get that wet paint and I'm just
kinda pulling in a few little strokes,
and I'm letting that just kind of
blend out in the water, but I'm kinda pulling it out beyond just to give
it a little bit more watery look. And if
you want to put a few birds in the sky,
you can go ahead and do that. I don't
know if I'm gonna do that or not, haven't really decided.
I think I kind of like this. I like this kind of plain, and then maybe,
if I wanted to, I could stamp the
sentiment up there or something in the
sky. I think I might want a little more blue in the water because that's what it has in the
photo and I really think it's lovely.
So what I'm doing is, I'm taking that
paint, that ultramarine blue, and just letting
it get in the brush but I'm kind of
dispersing it a little bit. I don't want it really wet.
I want my bristles to kind of splay
apart there a little bit. And I just
want to put in some... Just maybe some little shimmers in the water with that. You can
do a little with the pink, if you want to as well.
I'll do that and this will pretty much
be done. I think it's nice to these fun
little quick projects, some days, especially
when you're in the middle of some big
project that's you know seems like it's
taking a really long time.
I guess you know how I feel about the
UFOs. It's nice to have something you can
get done all in one sitting.
But there you have it, very simple little
scene in watercolor. That's a little too
bright there, that's kind of bugging me.
Put a little a little bit of blue in there.
Then when it's dry, just sign your
name and you are good to go. I wanna
