Blue Iris Mini Painting with Watercolor Pencils Video Lecture | Master the Art of Watercolour Painting (English) - Art & Craft

hi there Lindsay here the frugal crafter
with a very quick little painting of a
blue iris and I'm using a photo from
paint my photo by terry krycek and i
find these to be just wonderful for
doing quick little warm-ups and I'm
working on a three and a half inch by
five inch piece of watercolor paper I'm
starting by drawing these just two
little side flower petals and then
there's this one in the middle just kind
of dipping down and I will put a link to
his photo on paint my photo in the video
description so hopefully you guys can
find it if you want to check it out he's
got a lot of gorgeous photographs one in
fact a lot of purple iris I'm planning
on doing in a larger format but this is
just a quick little warm-up for today
because I think it's really important to
paint something every day even if all
you have is a few minutes so I'm just
gonna putting this put away back and
then I want to put in the focal pedal in
the front
I'm much used to working a little bit
larger than this so it is a little I
feel a little cramped in this smaller
space but I actually have a bunch of
frame little little frames that I bought
and I think it'd be fun to do a little
so I'm doing a little series of mini
watercolor paintings to go in them and
this little side thing here now the
wonderful thing about doing these tiny
paintings is that it's they're really
good for I'm gonna make this a little
taller oh this is another leaf behind
there they're really good for these
quick and easy quick and easy warm-ups
they're kind of almost like little
little studies I guess of of things
alright now I'm gonna add some color
here with my watercolor pencils kind of
blocking in some shadows this needs to
sometimes I read what I'm doing
watercolors pencils I can be very loose
because if something feels a little off
I can fix it
because I know I'm gonna be able to just
dilute it and add water to it so it's
kind of freeing I can actually go even
go completely abstract with this design
because I know I'm only gonna spend like
15 or 20 minutes on it I can always come
back to this photograph and do some more
stuff to it but I you know because I'm
kind of giving myself like a time limit
of just like 15 or 20 minutes I don't
have to fret about it you know I
probably will come back to its a
gorgeous photo as as are most of his as
are gee let's just say as are all the
photos I'm paint my photo I feel so
inspired and I'd love to go out nature
in and paint from life but sometimes it
just doesn't happen you know or
sometimes when I'm out and it's a
beautiful scene I might not have the
opportunity to paint it because you know
I'm watching after I've got my dog with
me and I'm watching after my kids so I'm
really thankful that there are so many
talented photographs there that
photographers that will share their
their beautiful work so always and if
you do use photos from over there make
sure you you know thank them and you can
share your pictures that you've painted
on that website as well it's a wonderful
community they've moved over its kind of
they moved to a different site so it's
been odd getting used to that it's a
little bit different than the other one
but they have had to move because there
were so many awesome people there that
they needed a bigger a bigger place to
hold them all so now I'm adding water
the pencils I'm using are al bright
drawers I just love how easily they
release their color there's lots of
great brands though I love like
everything by Derwent I just you know
I'm loving how loose this is there's I
the Prima ones are really nice too and
they're very affordable the only the
only downside to those Prima's is that
there are duplicates within the sets you
can't just buy like one set and get them
all you've got
you know by a bunch of the sets but then
you end up with a bunch of duplicates
and I think it's probably because
they're more geared to crafters then
then artists so you know they kind of
put them in coordinating sets that you
know of twelve colors that will go good
together I think that the the basic set
and the skin tone set are the best ones
to get actually I recommend the skin
tone set even if you know you have other
pencils because it has a lot of really
nice shades for skin tone that can be
very difficult like if you have the
inktense pencils by Derwent they're so
vivid that it's very difficult to get to
get a good skin tone all right
gosh I just love the way I just like to
look at paint as it flows do you guys
have that do you enjoy that well you
probably do if you're watching a video
der vielen say gosh the way we're just
were just commenting the other day about
how many how how come nobody says boy
anymore
that was like a staple of our childhood
insults you know boy
therapy I could do that but Durfee you
know wears such little punks I'm
assuming he was a little punk I didn't
know him when I was a kid but I
certainly was a little punk and I'll
lift a little bit of that out okay lift
out pretty nicely to use some of this as
if it was a kick of color
I'm feeling very mellow
you've got Lindy you've caught me in a
mellow moment oh my gosh I went to the
beach yesterday speaking of not being
mellow and the kids are so good I did I
brought a couple of kids friends
actually we met some kids friends and I
brought one of their friends along and I
had my own three kids and and so they
were so good that I said well why don't
we go and get ice cream they wanted ice
cream so I said Walter you guys take
scream on the way home we'll go through
a drive-thru though because I didn't
want to take you know every was stole
their bathing suits and I had the wet
dog and you know it was too hot to you
know go in somewhere and have the dog in
the car and so I'm like well I'll go
through the drive-through McDonald's and
both the only time I ever go through a
drive-through McDonald's is probably
like maybe twice a year and it's usually
after the beach and I get the kids and
ice cream or something cuz you know
it's affordable and and quick and easy
and so I saw these I thought they were
milkshakes so I said hey look
they have fraps and I go those and they
said what's a faff I said I think it's a
milkshake and it had like you know
chocolate sprinkles and drizzly things
and you know it looked like a milkshake
and so I ordered all these children
these brat will add they're actually
frappes and they're actually coffee
drinks and so I just want to apologize
in advance to anybody's child any any
parents whose child I gave me you know
highly caloric coffee drink to because I
thought it was a milkshake because I
don't go to McDonald's except maybe you
know twice a year to buy ice cream on
the way home from the beach so sort of
ways that happened and my kids took it
in stride there well like they get their
drinks and I'm thinking boy that smells
like coffee and they're all giggling t
he T he and and like this is gonna be in
it and so they were all like you know
felt very sophisticated and like they
pulled one over on me and I was like
whatever you only live once a couple
ounces of espresso or whatever they put
in those things probably they're gonna
do any higher and picks up for you know
anybody trying to get the kids to bed
that night went a little bit of trouble
but it was kind of funny I was uh you
know I'm just not used to you know I can
barely order in a drive-through it I
always find it very kind of stressful
because I never know you know what they
have and so of like a more nail cake
guys I know they have sundaes and I know
they have they have v codes and I think
if something like this like a blizzard
so you know think about what you want so
you'll be ready to order when we get
there and you know Mike is like I don't
know what they have but I'm like just
told you I know they might have other
things I'm not sure and then I saw the
big picture of what I thought was a
milkshake I'm like oh look at that
that's easy
so anyway funny story word to the wise
cautionary tale probably everybody knows
that now I'm just adding some expressive
lines with my pencils which is fun and I
like it I really like these pencils I
think I'm gonna have to make myself like
a little a little booklet that I can
take maybe make some little case or
repurpose a little case or something and
put my watercolor pencils put these in
it in a water brush
and um what else do I want some paper
maybe I'll make a dried one I could
journal I'm talking about that maybe by
the time I actually put this video up I
will have made a journal and posted that
I tend to do like sometimes I'll do
things in batches and then so that's
like when I'm on vacation I have stuff
to post on the youtubes plus sometimes
you know I like to have I like to oh my
I like to have at least one watercolor
painting video up a week because it's
popular people like them I love painting
with watercolors in my favorite mediums
so sometimes I get like I don't know
like you know I'll get no like God but
he call it a spree maybe what do you
call it when you get like obsessed with
one particular thing and then everything
else just kind of goes by the way style
getting one of those and then I'll be
jelly printing for a week or doing
something like that so I like to kind
have a few things done ahead of time
that's way too dark I don't like that I
blot it so I like to have some things
like that done up ahead of time so that
when I'm in you know a mood like that I
can I can you know fully embrace the
crazy fat of whatever I'm doing and not
leave you guys hanging really oh my gosh
I subscribed to this chick for
watercolor tutorial and now she's you
know baking whoopie pies for two weeks
that's not gonna happen I don't bake but
you know just for instance I haven't
looked at my reference photo for about
three minutes so we've got some
interesting things happening all this
time used myself anybody's still
watching only used six haven't even used
that many I've only used like these
pencils these colors have I even used
them all I think I have I think I've
used them all but I haven't used that
Brown that's over there that I thought I
might use so I like with water with
pencils I think I just spend on my
painting I apologize I was excited there
so for pencils I think it's it's
watercolor pencils you can get a lot do
a lot more with less
colored pencils you kind of need a few
more but with pencils I recommend if you
can swing it or you can find it to get a
large box with a lot of different colors
but I don't recommend use
them all at once because when you use
them all when you use too many colors it
gets your pictures get discordant and it
doesn't look as nice but having that
option is wonderful but just don't use
them all together I feel like I'm a
little bit of yellow in there I feel
like I want to sneak a little yellow out
there for like the the beards on the
flowers but you know I really want to
keep it kind of loose
I want my grass thing here a little bit
darker and I think I'm gonna mix a
little bit of that blue in there it's
just it's nice to have options you just
want to make sure that you you know with
power comes great responsibility today
just because you have 125 colors doesn't
mean you gotta use them all and it's
probably not gonna look good if you do
all right so let's liquefy that and then
I think I'm gonna call this done because
I just really like the looseness of it I
might put in a little bit of a wash or a
little bit of color in the background
I'm feeling like I want a little bit of
that purple in the background for some
that lighter purple you know the more
like pinky purple like I feel like it
should have a little bit of a little bit
of warmth I guess so I'm gonna do that
and I got Ocala here let me show you
what I'm gonna do I'm actually gonna
work it out a little bit so that so that
I'm making my little wash of color there
because I don't I want to control it I
don't want to dark and also I know this
with watercolor pencils your water your
rinse water does not get dirty as
quickly oh and just a little flipping
like that too
yeah just a little something I don't
want to I want to keep it loose I like
how something as a background like that
I can just add to the freshness and
looseness of a picture like I should
have a little steam for this see for all
these little paintings I'm doing really
quickly with these small cards like I
don't know watercolor minis or something
I don't know
lazy in this Oh lazy Lindsey's that
could be my series of painting videos
I'm gonna flick a little bit of color on
there to just probably use a stiffer
brush cuz I'd get more color but I kind
of like that
it's loose all right that's something
you could say about it
you've got a little bit of green towards
the bottom I'm gonna work it up here on
the tip of the brush first get nice and
you see then I'll flick some off I
always had the stranger because I have
my my computer and hidden from me too
though these strange with all spots of
paint on my monitor it's like huh how'd
that oh yeah I was painting that was on
my desk a nice painting I was looking at
a reference photo okay and it goes
without saying probably but I'm gonna
say it anyway you know if you are gonna
paint from reference photos make sure
you have the permission of the
photographer that you are using and
that's why I use paint my photo because
they have given their permissions for
their paint your photos to be used for
painting purposes all right there you
