Calla Lily Watercolor Painting REAL-TIME Full Tutorial Video Lecture | Master the Art of Watercolour Painting (English) - Art & Craft

hi there Lindsay here the frugal crafter
today we are going to do a quick
watercolor painting and we are going to
use watercolor pencils first to sketch
on our design now I'm doing this I'm
gonna put a link to in the video
description to the reference photo I'm
using or kind of loosely going by here
at P my photo basically what we're doing
is kind of looking down on an
arrangement of calla lilies so I'm just
putting like kind of this rim of the
open vase and I'm offsetting it a little
bit more than what's in the photo just
because I think it's a little bit more
useful then I'm gonna use this yellow
pencil and use whatever you have I think
it would be really great with the ink
tents but I had these prima ones right
here in my in my office so I decided I
would go right with these and as you may
know I work upstairs in the winter
instead of downstairs so I you know if I
don't have to run downstairs to get a
supply I'm gonna use what's at hand I'm
just gonna put that kind of trumpet part
of the calla lilies under those ovals
that I put there and we don't really see
that on this one now I'm gonna go in
with this brighter pink watercolor
pencil kind of like a magenta color
because you'll be able to see it a
little bit easier and it is a color in
these lilies they're really pretty I
haven't seen calla lilies this peachy
color before I was instantly reminded of
Georgia O'Keeffe when I saw this and I
thought it'd be just a great warm up
Monday well Monday morning painting but
you'd probably be seeing it in the
evening because that's my typically post
and then we get these pews it's such a
beautiful shape to these flowers I just
I just love it I love i love calla
lilies because the the shape is very
simple but you can so you can kind of
approach it without fear and then get
really kind of detailed with it if you
want to actually it's a lovely lovely
thing to paint and of course if you
don't feel comfortable drawing it you
could always trace the photo that i'm
going to link to i would urge you to try
painting it try sketching it because
it's really not that difficult look I'm
just the drew shapes we started with our
basic shapes and then we're refining
them here
okay so please don't feel over well
by this it should be fun and nobody has
to see it if it doesn't come out good
which I really love I love that about
art I mean if you're if you're composing
if you're playing musical instrument
once it's out there it's out there
there's no redo you know but when you're
when you're making visual art you can
keep redoing it until you get it just
right which which I love okay you don't
have to have an audience to do it either
and then this guy right here we're just
gonna get this nice big round shape a
little bloop and we're gonna pull the
shape up from this other side and then
little edge of that panel I just love
that lovely trumpety shape that they
have a little calyx and there we have
flowers that grow here and mean in our
woods called jack in the pulpit and it's
a very similar it's the same shape it's
just uh kind of has a different a
different color away they're I think
they're in danger they're something else
was to pick them this is what I was
always told and we don't bloom every
year it seems like I'll have them some
years but not others and they have these
beautiful red berries when they're not
in bloom okay so I'm gonna go right in
on painting the flowers and I've got my
rinse waters here I've got a selection
of different brushes I think I'm going
to use this
it's a cat's tongue it is the Princeton
I don't know that it's not the Neptune
it's a number six cat's tongue gets more
of just a plain synthetic brush but I
still like it and I'm using McKenzie
Tambi paints and I'm gonna give him a
spritz and the reason I'm using these
today you can use whatever you want it's
just cuz I had these out of my desk
because I was using them on another
project and I realized I hadn't used
them very much and I know a lot of you
guys have them and I took the insert
from the UM from the PAL I kind of put
that on then you put the cover on so
it's like in a cardboard box the way
it's packaged and I just using that as a
pallet so it's a great way to because
this doesn't this is what the Sun looks
like it doesn't have a mixing area so
using that little kind of protective
plastic is great for a for
and I'm gonna start by wetting this
flower over here and I'm gonna go right
over my watercolor pencil because I want
to I don't want to have weird lines I
want to liquify those and the good thing
if you're using inktense what you
totally can is that once you wet it and
it dries it becomes permanent so that's
really nice a nice feature I think the
intents are my favorite they just happen
to be downstairs right now I really like
them but I also think you should use
what you have there are so many good
brands out here the pencils I'm using
are Prima
they're not expensive compared to like
other watercolor pencils I'll put a link
down below to homework scrap book where
I got my I also got the paint's there
too and now they have a 36 count of the
paints and I think there's metallics and
that which is nice I don't have that one
it wasn't out it wasn't available when I
when I got this else one have some of
this
ready pink color that's pretty yummy
Tambe watercolors I was noticing
yesterday or actually quite opaque
opaque I was doing some I was preparing
for some some classes I was teaching and
I was using the white on top of some
other things in it was really opaque so
it's definitely more of like um like a
gouache I think Oh see so maybe get this
I'm getting this yellow in here so right
now what I have on there is the yellow
plus the pink that was from the pencil
and then I'm going to go in with I'm
gonna pick up a little bit of that pink
and I'm gonna bring it around these
edges here and since I'm using it's more
of like a cooler red or magenta color
it's not going really Orange it's going
more peach and it's kind of what I'm
what I'm going for with these flowers I
kind of dragged that in there not doing
too much here because I'm gonna want to
glaze over in a little bit this might be
a fun one I might do this with my adult
class next week might be kind of a fun
fun project I'm trying to like also get
the gesture of the
of the pedals so that's why you kind of
see me moving my whole my whole hand
there hope there's no weird shadows I
hope it's nice and bright for you guys
sometimes it's hard to tell with my
little monitor here nobody let that dry
I'm gonna go over here and wet this
flower just clear water and it's picking
up the the pigment and liquefying those
watercolor pencils which is what I want
because what if you look a fight now
you're not gonna get a surprise later
when you go in to put a background and
then you realize you're getting you know
pigment all over the place that you're
not that you're not counting on so
that's why I like to do that now and you
know you could totally have drawn that
in with pink I'm sorry with the yellow
pencil if that's a little too bold
I want to make sure that you could
really see what I was doing though
because I know sometimes on video it's
hard to pick up like yellow if you're
writing on white paper with it the thing
I notice about these paints is that they
don't flow as well as like my M grams
which can which means I can put colors
side by side and they're not going to
mix together as much which can be
advantageous if you're trying to do
everything kind of a prima or all at
once you have a little bit more control
and I think that's why they became so
popular with rubber stampers is it just
gave you a little bit more control over
your painting everything wasn't kind of
flowing together and I think that's
because it's more of a gouache and more
about an opaque paint of opaque paints
tend to tend to be heavier pigments I
sit on the top of your paper rather than
sinking in so they're easier to lift and
it's just you know I'm not seeing one's
better than the other that's just kind
of how how they behave okay let's see
I'm just trying to decide if I can get
into bring it in a little bit so I can
bring this green in from the stem to the
bottom of the the trumpet part of the
lily and it's not making mud and brown
because the pigments aren't blending
that much at this point you grab a
little bit more of this I
all the colors are in Japanese on that I
don't know what that color is it looks
kind of like a permanent green light I
would say if I had to guess and I'm kind
of fudging in the UH the stems there
alright I would like to do a little
something on the on the vase I'm not
gonna do a lot with it because I when
you're dealing with like ellipses and
stuff if you're not really accurate you
could end up getting you know really
awkward looking thing so what I'm just
gonna kind of do is first of all I'm
gonna go right in here and you just kind
of wash away that gray I'm going to wash
that grey right out of my flower do you
remember that you remember that wash
that gray right out of my hair they
don't do that anymore
apparently yes women are supposed to
have gray hair anymore if we can't even
talk about it oh great oh my mother
always says I'm going blonde like I like
that so I'm just kind of I'm just
rinsing that out
isn't that so it's easy it's easy to
lift up those up those pigments you
couldn't blot it if that's bothersome to
you in fact well that's wet I was gonna
go ahead and add that yellow in so you
can see I'm not it's not really bleeding
into those other colors because the
paint is heavier I think and you'll
notice that as you become more
experienced of a painter and you start
collecting supplies which is a great
collection to have I got to tell you
it's awful awful lot of fun you'll
notice that well I feel like painting
this and I think this would be better in
oils I feel like painting this I think
this would be better with my inktense
pencils I think this would be better
with my graphics and you know or
whatever ones you like and you you
purchased you'll start to know the
limitations and the working properties
of your paint and you will you'll choose
certain paints like I I keep these
folders so over I paint my photo that's
where I got this reference photo um
I have different folders and different
albums that I've made and I think you
can actually look at my albums if you
want to I'm not sure how that works if
you can look at other peoples albums but
anyway I kind of divide up my pictures
I'm like oh that would be a good oil
painting tutorial or that would be good
to do in watercolors or acrylics or
pastel and I kind of
organize them so that way if I I'm kind
of like just sitting here like oh I
don't know what I want to paint today I
know I can go to my paint my photo
albums and figure out you know stuff oh
I that inspired me one day I'm gonna do
that so what I'm going to do here is um
first I'm gonna figure out what blue I'm
gonna want to add to this cuz I've got
some primaries I've got my red yellow
and I want some blue so I think um I
think I'll go with ultramarine this is
what that looks like just because I know
that's a very reliable blue for me I use
it a lot and so I'm gonna throw some of
that right on my palette which you
probably can't see because I'm kind of
off camera it's down I just put some
ultramarine right there I know it's
probably glaring and difficult to see
but I want to mix a nice natural gray so
I'm gonna take that red that I was using
mix it with that blue so it's gonna give
me like a purple and then I'm gonna add
a little green to that so it's gonna
grate up I'm afraid the yellow will just
make it a little too muddy so I want to
keep using the same four colors that
I've been using so that I don't end up
with mud and that I don't end up with a
discordant painting and mixing your own
Gray's is really wonderful because it
teaches you how to how color works I
need a little more blue than that okay
that looks pretty good maybe just a
touch more blue so I want a cool fairly
cool glass color here probably my glass
is dry by now but I'm not gonna worry
about that cuz you know what the house
is quiet I'm painting life is good kids
are back in school it's January 4 I
think they're all ready to get back
anything ready to get back to sports and
school
I can't tell that's crooked or not
because I'm sitting at my desk and maybe
I look in the monitor I can tell I feel
like I need to flush that a little bit
that's also a little trick by not having
an entire circle here and just having
you know a semicircle or half of that
base I don't have to worry so much about
having it perfect because your brain
will fill in the rest of your brain will
fill it in perfectly
our brains are good
I breathe the wickets Matt I'm talking I
feel like we haven't hung out in a while
I'm just talking down a mile a minute
here I'm just gonna I'm just basically
softening those gray lines and that's a
pretty grey and see that grate is going
to match and it's not gonna look odd
with what we have here
they're chiffonade so I wouldn't run
another paper towels I put a bungee cord
on the right desk and I put a paper
towel roll on it and a masking tape roll
so I'm just too cool for school I feel
like so organized so organized oh my
gosh I'm deciding I'm doing the 40 bag
challenge which is where you like get
rid of 40 bags and 40 days of clutter
from your home I never done anything
like that I just I hate being wasteful
and I don't I don't collect a lot of
things but you know how it just piles up
especially if you have kids so I've done
I don't want seven bags so far it's you
know I just kind of started before
Christmas and then not intending to do
that but then I saw the 40 bag of 40
days challenge it just makes sense cuz
you just going to you fill a bag you
don't and that for me that works and
stuff like do this from today do that
room tomorrow it's like just fill a bag
fill a bag fill a bag every day and get
rid of it you know it could be donating
books to library doesn't have to be
thrown away in the trash you know but I
mean stop holding onto stuff you never
going to use that's my thing you know I
have a hard time somebody gives me
something I feel like I need to hold on
to until I die you know I need to need
to get over that all right I think I
might even leave the background white
here I'm just kind of feeling this to
see if it's dry I'm gonna pause the
video I'm gonna dry this and come back
and we're gonna do a little more work on
this
okay that's dried and what I'm gonna do
here is actually wet my background I
felt like I sometimes went through the
trouble of taping this down on all sides
I kind of want to get that nice frame so
what I'm doing here is simply wetting
the background with clear water and
since I have kind of closed areas
meaning like this area is not touching
that area or that or over there I'm
gonna do it one area at a time because
it's just a little easier to work with
so if you can see that that I have wet
this and if I tip it you can see that's
shiny even see if you've missed any
spots you see maybe you can
depending there you go you can see that
it's kind of shiny you want it to be
evenly shiny because a lot of people
have a hard time with this figuring out
how what of it now I was thinking I
wanted to do some like maybe some
purpley blue so I mean use that same
blue I was mixing for my background that
ultramarine and I'm gonna grab some of
that crimson e color
okay make my purple that way because I'm
using colors if I already use that's too
much RAM I'm gonna go with a little bit
more blue hopefully you can see that I
know it's a weird palette isn't it yeah
they're nice a cool purple there and I
am going to just add some writer but
next to my flower I think I'll just kind
of let it drip around I want this to be
very sketchy very loose I also think it
might be kind of pretty to do a little
blue on its own
and then I'm gonna bring a little bit of
that into my vase because it's a clear
vase I want it to kind of grab some of
the some of the colors from its
surroundings
and if you don't like this you can go
ahead and leave your background
completely completely white that's
completely up to you go do this area
next it's gonna make sure I keep it in
frame one rot frame a little bit sitting
at my my upstairs winter desk well just
let's take as long as we need to finish
this nice relaxing face relaxing Monday
morning painting right work Monday
evening depending on when you happen to
be watching this I might wish that I
kept it white though I've gotta tell ya
I may regret putting the color in but
you don't know unless you try and if you
don't like it then you don't have to do
it this is gonna try a little bit later
so um I sort of don't worry about how
dark it is right now I try to make it a
little bit darker than what I want it to
be when it's done just because it
backgrounds are kind of a pain to go
back in and rework so I tried to just go
shade darker than what I want so that
when it dries it'll be the right color
cuz what happens when your paint dries
is that it you know just like your if
you have like a black or you have a dark
colored t-shirt on if you get that
fabric wet it's gonna look darker same
thing with with your paints the paper
looks more vibrant and darker when it's
wet a little bit of blue in there and I
like that I like being able to put the
colors I've already used in the
background because it unifies my
painting
there now because that's that
backgrounds wet I don't want to work on
the edges of the painting because it
will make it blend in so I'm gonna go
into like the center into like the the
calyx area I guess it's called and I'm
gonna go in with that yellow that I was
using and the loaded I'm loading it
right from the pan onto my brush so it's
pretty thick so you can see that paint
and usually with watercolor you don't
really see it on the bristles unless
you're using like a white bristle brush
so look how it will pick that is and
that's because this is like the Gansey
Tambi watercolor which is more like a
gouache so it's opaque but it doesn't
it's not really kind of pastel II I
don't think it's necessary that you have
these for this but if you have if you do
have these if this is going to give you
that look a little bit more think of my
zoom in a little bit to give you a
little bit better view of my paper while
we're working there we go excuse the
wiggled like my husband for the stick on
the ceiling over my over my desk to my
office so that I can film like this but
it's kind of wobbly so it's got to shake
it a little bit all right now I'm
picking up some white from my pallet and
I'm gonna dab that on just onto the top
it's gonna give it a little bit of
texture also pull it away from the
background a little bit it's very subtle
but that's what I'm saying about these
gams you can maybe Timmy's being so fake
it's like almost surprising how big a
little bit more there but it does really
pull that out of the center of the
flower which is what I'm going for
all right and all the stems I want to
darken that green so I'm gonna go into a
little ultramarine blue and I'll bring
up for my palate so you can see how
marine blue a little bit of that I'm
calling it permanent green light because
that's what it looks like on a
traditional palette and I'm gonna go in
and
and a little bit of shadow to these
stems I feel like I got like I didn't
really have a very defined place or the
each flower was coming from I might
regret those stomachs later but you know
what it's a green card I can mail it
away I don't have to look at again and
something like oh look Lindsey paying me
a card that's lovely
hopefully or like those in the circular
file cuz I'm part of their $40 40 it's
not gonna not gonna bother me you know I
think that's the thing that's not that
it's hard for me is that if somebody
gave me something I have such a hard
time getting rid of it even if it's
something I'm not gonna use because I
feel so wasteful but then I'm like you
know it's more easeful friend just been
to sit and collect dust and not be used
at all when somebody might get used from
it so so yeah it was funny cuz I went to
my closet and I got rid of two like
black trash bags of clothes that are
perfectly good either they don't fit or
they're I'm sick of looking at them or
whatever and most of them were things I
didn't even buy so you know and it was a
lot of like you know hand-me-downs and
stuff it's like well I don't want to see
it go away so I'll take it but it's like
well if I'm not wearing it it's not
there's no point keeping in somebody
else can wear it and there's my computer
is making a Facebook nice somebody's how
defying me of something so yeah I'm
working on it 2016 be a better person
Lindsey how about that yeah and I hope I
haven't like really decluttered before
so this will be good I'm feeling very
very positive about it I'm gonna do a
video but one little word because I've
never done that the one word to
represent you for the year and if I
picked a year word this year so I'm
looking forward to to uh talking about
that I'm sure you're just waiting with
bated breath see what my word will be
all right hope hopefully I'll stick with
it we'll just be a better person for a
week and then go back to go back to
whatever go back to my parting ways and
now I'm getting some of that I kind of
crimson II color I think it's very
similar to an alizarin crimson if you
are working on a different palette cuz
honestly use which have at least try
what you have before you go and buy
something else to see what's gonna work
because you buying supplies and not
using them and they sit on your shelf
that does not help anyone it doesn't
really help the industry because they
kind of count on you but loving it and
buying more and if you're not using what
you have you're not gonna feel like
buying more right you know you know you
feel bad you feel bad if you don't use
what you have and I'm just kind of
licking my my strokes in and I'm not
using a credit card scraper on this
because I don't want really dark veins
cuz they don't have dark meat it's kind
of like a striation this brush is really
neat it was the first princeton brush I
bought I wish i item number forty fifty
Ct size six I really first I've only
used this brush this whole piece maybe I
used I might even brushed it wet an area
I don't think I did I think I use it so
on the whole time off to review the tape
but but it's nice similar to a round
brush where you can you can use you can
use the tip or the width of the brush by
just fine that has a lot of control it's
something that you might want to
consider picking one up you know
especially if you're a beginner and you
don't have a lot of brushes I would
recommend this just because it's so easy
just to do a painting with one brush see
I mean again there was some detail I can
do a little dry brushing I can you know
do all kinds of things with it alright
now one of those shadow around the
stamen and I'm gonna mix my own shadow
of course and I think that purple that I
use in the background would probably be
a pretty good shadow because it's gonna
be going over yellow and it's kind of a
bluey purple so I think that would work
pretty well so I'm just going to pick
that up and I'm gonna because I feel
like I have too much water on my brush
going to tap it on my paper towel to
take off the excess okay they'll still
be plenty of pigment in there but if I
go in there with a fully charged brush
and it's too wet it's gonna make a mess
let the blood and I may end up lifting
color that I don't want to lift and
hopefully the statement is dry in there
I want to kind of get the depth of that
flower revealed here a little bit of
that to the edge I think it is still a
little wet but that's alright because I
want that texture and I want it to have
a little shadow on it and then I'm just
kind of spreading it out you see how
that like purple looks really gray over
that yellow that's because those colors
are mixing in their opposites now I have
cleaned my brush it's just a little bit
damp I blotted out the extra water and
I'm just smoothing the edge there you
gotta clean it several times probably
because the colors mix they're gonna get
muddy and I want a little more color in
there I think I'm just kind of dropping
it in I think the papers wet enough that
it will kind of flow out a little bit
and I don't want to I don't to overwork
it and make it look awkward a nutty
actually I could a little more shadow up
here probably should do this with a
softer brush so I don't disturb the pink
underneath so much but oh I'm
overworking it a little bit but hey now
you can see what overworking looks like
right I didn't add a little bit of red
into that because I feel like I've
muddied that too much I'm making added
some nice red I can overcome that I
think and we'll let that hang out and
dry a little bit me got a little bit of
yellow to the edge I just don't want to
have those weird weird hard edges what a
flower petal those should be fairly
smooth looking okay so now I'm going to
go over to this one here which is a
pretty stuff
your shadow um I think what I'm gonna do
is actually wet the whole shadow area
well I'll actually know what the stamens
are wet change that strike that reverse
that what we're gonna do is we're gonna
go in with our brighter yellow we're
gonna avoid the shadow area and paint
this up here bring it right bring that
yellow right out to that watercolor
pencil line grab a little bit of crimson
this one doesn't have as much crimson on
it and add that in here kind of let it
blend and can't see any of the of the
trumpety part of this flower yes at all
and we won't be able to so I'm just
gonna go in there and kind of did pull
the uh kind of divide that little petal
there so we can kind of see where it
overlaps this is way longer than I
thought this video would be I hope you
guys I hope I'm not keeping you we're
not keeping you from some fantastic
Monday night television I don't know the
answer what the start is on break so
what could you possibly be watching the
good stuff is not it's not playing right
now all right we're gonna I'm gonna
block that a little bit like that
blot never rub when you're doing that
it's always a straight up-and-down a
little blocked okay anytime you see
something a little funky or you get a
puddle where you don't want it just up
and down block now let's go over to this
guy and let's work on the same areas
we've been doing the other ones we're
gonna avoid the shadows right now
because we've got it let that steam and
dry or when it end up with a little bit
of a weirdness like we have over there
it's just gonna make it easier for us if
we can do this shadow after everything's
dry so I'm just gonna let that area go
in a little bit of that see me oh I've
been using and I'll probably go back
over to the hair dryer and dry this like
I did last time when we were waiting for
things to dry I just went over and play
the hairdryer and use that I thought
about bringing my heat tool upstairs but
I haven't even I haven't even done that
my heat tool still downstairs isn't
doing any serious stamping embossing
stuff I'll do that still do that
downstairs just cuz I don't want to
completely overtake my office with our
supplies since I share it um grab a
little bit of that crimson II read again
so were you saying colors I haven't
introduced any new colors I saw I know
everything's gonna be harmonious only it
was that easy to make everything order
life how harmonious right flicking with
the brush to see this is called the
cat's tongue rush as I had mentioned
before and I'm just kind of flicking it
and it just drags down the smallest
amount of paint in that beautiful
striation that I want it's very subtle
and let's see this is like a curved
around petal so I want to make sure that
I keep that line it'll be some shadow
action in there and I think it's time
for me to dry this again and then we'll
come back door file shadows and be set
with this painting okay we're back I've
dried that with the hairdryer I've got
my brush I've mixed some shadow color
here and I've kind of got that red and
blue just the purple then I've got some
with a little green in it over there so
it's a little bit more of a gray color
and I'm gonna go in for my darkest
shadow in this whole piece and that is
so we're looking almost straight down on
this flower this is the darkest area and
I'm puttin it in fairly boldly I find
that if I can get these dark shadows in
then unless timid the rest of the
painting so I'm just going in and
getting this done if your statement is
weird at all you can fix it and after
you get the deepest darkest shade there
once your brush off and
want to blot it so that you've got most
of the excess water out and I actually
to turn my picture and I'm just gonna
kind of drag it out a little bit I don't
want to disturb much of the paint
underneath I don't want to end up with a
weird hard line I just want to kind of
make it gradually come out and this the
shower kind of comes up to the edge
there so I'm grabbing a little bit more
paint and pulling it out all right there
we have that I don't like how rough it
is there so I think I am gonna try to
work that just wet that area a bit and
add a little more of the shadow color
now if I end up with a weird like kind
of puddle then I just wipe my brush off
and set it in there and pick that up and
I feel like I need a little bit of red
in that shadow so I'm just gonna go and
grab a little bit of my palette and that
will help keep it from being too muddy
too but you know if I feel like I've got
too much I just wipe my brush off and I
set it in there and I pick up the excess
and I do a little hard lie in there I'm
not happy about so I'm just gonna try to
wiggle it and get get it kind of erased
a little bit there and then I'm gonna
leave that be because if I keep messing
with it I'm gonna end up really messing
it up but I did see there's a little bit
of a shadow up there I want to put in
there so I've got a little bit of that
purpley paint on my brush and I'm just
gonna pull down from the edge and leave
it maybe drag it over it's really hard
to leave it I've got to stay and grab a
little bit of red in there
cuz that's the color that I have on the
flower anyway and then just kind of
leave it be it's difficult it's so hard
to leave something alone reuse well I
just wanted a little bit more like this
and then before you know it you've
you've messed it up it happens to
everyone
so now I'm gonna go to this guy here and
get my shadows in here just trying to
keep the the pointy thing I can get to
calyx I'm not a botanist if anybody
knows the right name it's a stamen
what's the difference anyways between a
stamen and their calyx maybe one's
female one's male I have no idea what's
dragging up that uh do you see shadowy
paint um I got to smooth this out cuz
this should be quite smooth we don't
want too much shadow right on that calyx
there should have a little bit more
tongue and I'm just gonna smooth over
that and maybe add a little bit of red
to that just because I'm getting too
much mud there with all that yellow so
again you've got to be careful with it
cuz kind of in a perfect mud storm here
because we've got colors that are a
little on the opaque side if using the
Gansey Tami's and you've got yellow and
yellow just loves to muddy up other
colors I love the color yellow though
it's one of my favorite colors it's so
cheerful I'm taking a little bit of my
grey that I mix that's got a little
green in it so that purple plus a little
bit of greens with a little bit that's a
little bit greater than purple and I'm
just adding that right to the edge to
kind of bring out the trumpet area on
the flower now we're really starting to
see the shape of our flowers I hope you
guys don't mind how long this is taking
I've kind of thinking geez maybe I
should do a speed paint but I you guys
have mentioned so many times how you
really prefer hearing me talk about the
process so if anybody's interested in
the speed paint I could totally you know
mix one and together and you know just
take this footage and speed it up and I
don't know play some music or something
so if that's something that you prefer
or like in addition to then I can do
that I always worry that if I do that
then people aren't gonna watch the long
when just because it's a short one and
then I won't get very good views on
either one of them I'm just adding some
red there cuz I feel like it needs a
little bit it doesn't photo anyway have
a little bit more red a lot of times I
end up adding the pigment and then
taking a wet brush and spreading it
that's another thing you wouldn't notice
that necessarily in a speedpaint you
might think I have paint on my brush mum
actually said just water and I'm pulling
that paint I just put around so it's
kind of helpful to have that info now I
feel like I want to add a little yellow
to that upper edge be careful not to get
into that red I just put down there but
I just feels a little too harsh so if it
does blend a little bit I'm okay with
that and I feel like I want a little
more yellow right on the edge of that
curved leaf and probably at this point
I'm doing a little more nitpicking then
you need to you could probably say I'm
done with this I'm good that's a lily I
don't need to do any more but I'm gonna
you know keep on pushing the painting
because I'm enjoying myself and it's not
what arts about right we should enjoy
ourselves
spending time on something to like my
brush it unless you're youtuber you're
trying to get an idea like 20 minutes or
something that ship has sailed already
all right now I'm using some of that
yellow because it's pretty strong it'll
peak and I'm I am just bringing out some
of these brighter brights uh yeah a
little bit more to some of these middles
it just I just look really pretty if you
get a little bit of that nice golden
yellow in there
and I feel like I still need to do some
work over here because everything just
kind of wanted to get there there and I
wasn't crazy about it
so I think what I'm gonna do cuz I do
have a hard edge there and of course
I've just put yellow in the center that
I shouldn't have done that I'm just
gonna soften this out and maybe I won't
even add any more shadow to it maybe
I'll just let it be although it
definitely needs a little more shadow so
I'm probably not gonna let it be letting
it be is not my is not my strong suit
I'm gonna Fester you probably oughta let
it baby but I'm gonna Fester

I'm eating some hard edges though it's
lifting up some of the color nice oh I
do need to add a little bit more in
there to kind of fill in when I just
lifted up my accident all right yeah I
don't like how that shadow is mimicking
the stamen I want to make the shape of
the flower more so I'm festering some
more ah gosh hope you guys all had a
great new year can't believe is January
4th oh my gosh
oh it's just that week between blow me
that week between thanksgiving
thanksgiving i'm so weird you know in
one instance in one on one hand it feels
like it drives on and on and on on the
other hand it feels like it's over in a
flash you know it's so weird and it's
like you're in this complete like time
warp because like what is it I don't
know yellow you think yeah if you want
to if you want to do some really bright
highlights and you have these paints or
even other watercolors that have white
you could take a little of that white
and either mix it on mix it with that
yellow or even just use it on its own
because it will mix with what's
underneath and you can go in and add
some highlights like if you want to add
some more highlights on the steamy calyx
part you can you can go and add some
just on that wow if I should maybe I
should call this a gouache painting I
probably should actually it just kind of
softens it - I noticed that like these
these flowers it's hard to get that
subtle look on these because they're so
they're very bright for a calla lily so
they Loomis a little weird being this
bright it's hard to get that range of
colors in there without without making
them
to dark but you can do whatever you like
it's your painting right it's your
choice
I'm always getting the pans dirty the
candy candy pans it seems like thinking
this I can wipe them up with a rag that
simply is helpful I feel like I should
probably just uh that's a good thing
about when I stick to my 20-minute limit
because of my camera instead of I'll
have to paint pieces together in my um
software but when I stick to that limit
I don't overwork anything's at all time
too but today I just feel like playing
okay um and then for the base I'm just
deciding since I have been using white
all along that ship has sailed
I think I might do a little bit of
weight highlight on my vase why not add
a little bit there
and you know what a little bit of green
at least because obviously I have the
green in the stem so they would reflect
just a little bit in here and there
maybe just a little swoosh just to show
that it's glass and shiny and there
that's how about it I hope you enjoyed
this tutorial today one another quick
tip I want to share with you is that
when you're removing you are tape if
using masking tape this is just cheap
masking tape from the Dollar Tree
probably I pull it at an angle see how
I'm like I'm holding it and let go this
is the tape set of 45 but I'm holding it
pulling it right against my board and
for some reason when I do that it
doesn't seem to want to tear my paper
and another tip is to let make sure like
your paper is pretty dry when you do
this like if you just did a background
wash let it completely dry before you
pull the tape off so it doesn't risk
wet paper is fragile paper always
remember that that's why when you use a
credit card scraper we have our paper
wet because it's really gonna gouge in
there and make and make those those
marks that we want but the other thing
is when it's wet you know you all have
to be careful with it it's going to be a
much more delicate paper so here is my
finished my finished painting I hope
