LIVE! Weathered Fishing Boats in Watercolor Tutorial Video Lecture - Master

hello everyone Lindsey here the frugal
crafter for our live Friday broadcast
back from a week off while I was at the
heirloom stamp show and I got Sara here
with me today hi and we are ready to do
some nautical painting kind of it's
connection it's going to be three boats
that are on the land they've their
little pasture prime so it'll be fun to
do some textures and whatnot it's not
playing on my side oh that's how you're
gonna delay oh they're amazing I see
what happens when you take a week off I
know are so autocratic let us know in
the comments if you can hear us alright

start off by wetting the sky and the

the reference photo if you want to have
that to go by I'm wetting right over the
masts on the boats here because I want
to definitely be able to see sky through
them just take a little care as you wet
around them to make sure that you're not
getting water on the boat because with
water colors the water will go wherever
the paper is wet so you want to kind of
guide it a little bit that way we're
going to go right down to the risin line
and with the entire sky with clean water
I dipped into my dirty water but luckily
it was kind of blue
okay and if you have any questions go

anything that's on your mind
painting related while people may have
questions about stamp show - oh that's
okay that's fine unless that was such a
fun weekend I came back exhausted though
I think I need a vacation doing my
vacation I'm going to take a little
ultramarine blue and a little phthalo
blue and mix them together because I
kind of need more of a neutral the ultra
is a little too purple and the tail is a
little too green so that's going to give
me a nice neutral pretty blue and I'm
just going to kind of put some here and
there on the top part of my paper and I
probably have enough right there to do
the whole sky so I'm just kind of
spreading out a little bit leaving gaps
for the clouds want your skies to be
darker at the top because it gives you a
little bit more perspective and looks a
little more natural highlight Gracie
Shack one hi Lindsay can you tell me
what people mean by lightfast and
watercolor paint nice to be back home
and watching you live Oh wonderful
budget a safe holiday umm lightfast just
refers to how long it's going to take
that paper but that paint to fade
usually there'll be a star system either
one two or three stars on your on your
paint but make sure you check because
they don't all run by the same rules
but generally a number one is excellent
meaning 150 years or more two is good
meaning about a hundred years and three
is less than a hundred years not really
considered to be suitable for art now
then take some pyro wall red which is
kind of like a cadmium red and mix up
with some of my blue to get kind of like
a grayish purple and I've quite a bit of
water on my brush so it's not going to
be too dark and I'm just going to kind
of paint the bottom sides of some clouds
it's really light just dabbing it in
there and because it and you probably
thinking why isn't that bright because
we're using such we're using red and
blue it's because the the pyrole red or
cadmium red is much more Orange
and the and that phthalo blue is very
green so the red and the green kind of
cancel each other out there you want a
little more purple or use a little bit
more ultramarine you want kind of like a
greyish purple here Elizabeth
chandi what water color do you recommend
for me I am 11 um I would recommend
something that's non-toxic um let's see
the Reeves brand is actually pretty good
it's it's like a student quality that's
just below the cotman scale by Windsor
Newton you can find it add a lot of big
box craft stores or I do believe Jerry's
Autorama carries it they also have a
Lucas studio set which is like on sale
for 1199 at Jerry's which gives you 12
colors and they they're very pigmented
but they don't carry any toxic pigments
in that line so that would be those the
nice thing about the the Lucas over the
Reeves is that it comes in a little
pallet so you don't need to purchase a
pallet whereas the Reeves come in tubes
alright so we're going on our sky dry so
now we have some different we got some
white we've got some shadows we've got
some blue if you lost your white go
ahead and paper towel and you can blot
away little clouds I'm really kind of
happy with mine but I will show you
right here what I mean they're just just
a bit and you want to do that while it's
wet because we have something low blue
in the sky and that will stain our paper
so we don't want to wait because we add
a little blue can't lift it back up
later too easily now we're going to go
in and we are going to skip this kind of
MIDI middle bar here and we're going to
wet the bottom ground area of our
painting and we have a door open so you
might hear the chickens out back
free-ranging today yes you will
I just went we have one chicken has gone
broody which means it just wants to sit
on eggs and it doesn't any other
chickens or people to go around the eggs
and I went out today except kind of
concerned that it hasn't been eating and
I went and there were we have two boxes
for for them to lay their eggs in it's
usually plenty and one chicken was
laying an egg in one box and the broody
was in another box and there's a big
chicken trying to practically lay an egg
on top of the broody one
because it would not move so I took out
the broody chicken and put it by the
water and dipped its beacon so it would
force it force it to drink and eat
because Oh on a different note Ian
Jackson are there any section at this
stage that you would mask or wax resist
not for this one if any if any of these
colors get into the boat it's not a big
deal these are old boats and they're
going to be weathered so any green that
gets in there is going to look like
algae or moss so I'm not really
concerned with that I'm going to go in
with some yellow ochre and I'm just
going to put some in there I really want
my colors to stay fresh and mix on the
paper I really want this yellow ochre
more to the front just because it's
going to help add a little bit of depth
now I'm gonna grab a little SAP green
then to the mid-tones bring it down
towards the yellow this is a pretty
light colored composition so if you want
your colors more intense you want to put
them in darker at this point
warming up that sap green with a little
yellow ocher in here and I want there to
be in the reference photo it's not it
almost looks like these boats are out in
the middle of a field but I really
wanted to feel like it's maybe on the
edge of the shore so I'm going to put
some more yellow ochre down here down by
the corner and I'm going to put some
burnt sienna into that just to kind of
look like it could be some wet wet sandy
beach iary 'as marshy and then I'm gonna
add a little bit of the Prussia phthalo
blue that we were using just to look
like there's maybe some water that's
reflecting the sky color don't have to
put too much on there just give it that
hint that you're near the shore at least
and then we're going to do some SAP
green and Prussian blue together and
we're going to put in these odds bar of
trees back here it's okay if it fusses
if it gets it to the sky and it gets a
little fuzzy because then things further
away should be softened out a focus if
you wanted to you can mask I like the
little bar that's going like along the
front of that boat but I generally only
mask up absolutely have to I'm not a big
fan of masking I feel like it takes a
lot of spawn to newett a spontaneity
away but that's just my personal opinion
you can do whatever you like
Gracie Shack one asked how did the
heirloom show go it looked great oh it
was so much fun so much fun I loved it
it was tiring actually I was I've been
tired most of the week since I'm back
but I was a lot of fun I loved teaching
down there I love meeting people from
the community that come out it's it's a
lot of fun
love the getting some new goodies and
seeing new ideas on how to use the stuff
I already have it's just it's a great
time if you can ever make it to a show

lol yellow ocher with just a little bit
of burnt sienna and I'm gonna fill in
the gap between the sky and the mid mid
area
Graci Shack one could you tell me where
I could get the best sketching paper all
the paper I seem to get is not very good
quality just for a drawing slash
coloring well she's in the UK so um we
use a lot of Strathmore paper here but
I've heard it's difficult to find over
there I would look for um J's I'm trying
to think of anybody's in the UK that
could help her I'm not sure what brands
you have I always know aqua B's a good
one but I don't know if they are over
there um - no money Sarah I don't know
of anything
ring a bell yeah um I don't know I'm not
familiar I'm just familiar the stuff
that we have here in the States
yeah but I also don't do a draw a ton of
drawing so I any I have you know one
sketch pad from four years ago the last
time I took an art class known it's a
stir have more probably yeah yeah I like
that 400 series drawing paper and I
guess maybe maybe even ask at like in
our supply store they might be able to
tell you like for what sort of sketching
you want to do what would be the best
it's going to be more expensive than
ordering it on like Amazon but it's
worth it to kind of get that information
and then you're supporting a local
business - which is always nice and I
just added a little bit of burnt sienna
because I was feeling that it was just a
little too uniform if I added a little
bit more Prussian blue to help cool it
down and push it back I think I need a
little bit something maybe I put a
mountain over here because it's looking
all like about the same height I don't
really like that so
I'm going to build that up over there a
little bit people are saying the video
is starting it's freezing for a few
seconds here and there okay it's
probably something on our end yeah
probably hopefully the when it goes into
we play it'll catch up because sometimes
it I think it stores things in multiple
locations when you upload I don't know
how the fancy internet magic works but
sometimes it's a little smoother when
you go back in and watch a replay yeah
it's been weird I've noticed with our
internet maybe I should call the company
it seems like it cuts out sometimes and
for what we're paying I mean I think
we're close like hundred bucks a month I
think for this yeah I shouldn't be doing
that yeah okay there I'm pretty happy
with that now I feel like I broke up the
background a little bit so it's not all
like all those trees aren't lined up and
now I think I am going to just go
quickly dry with my heat tool so if you
have any questions be a great time to to
ask them I just don't want whatever I
paint on the boats to wick into the
surrounding ground area because with
water color it wants to follow the path
of least resistance it's going to go
where the paper is wet because it's easy
for it to move
and the paper I'm painting on is the
Fabriano artistic oh and I am using a
block which means it's all bound on all
four sides so I don't have to I take it
down or anything so it makes it very
convenient and this was in the travel
kit at Jerry's Adorama that features
Lucas paints so that's also a good buy
if you're starting out or if you want a
set of paints to travel low JLT 110 110
what is watercolor medium also wondering
what would what we would have gum arabic
usually what you would use gum air
we're here a gum arabic increases the
flow and transparency and watercolor so
it makes your colors appear brighter and
glossy err so if your colors are looking
a little dull it'll help brighten them
up and also it makes them easier to lift
off the paper so if you've added gum
arabic to say a color like say little
blue the 10 sustain it's going to keep
that paint on top of the surface of the
paper rather than letting it absorb in
so you'll be able to lift it off easier
it's almost like a binder - it's like a
it's the binder that comes in watercolor
paint unless you're using like the core
watercolors it's basically like a glue
and that holds all you pigments together
and like student grades often have less
gum arabic so that's why it tends to
crack but basically that's when it's
used for its it's a binder and
watercolor medium maybe gum arabic or
gum arabic and ox comics together just
to help things flow a bit that's not a
product that I use personally so I can't
really give you too much more
information than that on it
I usually don't look for a medium unless
I'm having a problem with my paints not
doing what they want and it's usually
acrylics where I would want a medium
because I'm thrilled with watercolor
just the way it is
although iridescent medium is fun if you
want to like get sparkle into something
all right I'm starting this boat way
back here and I'm going to add in some
pyrole red or you can use CAD right if
that's what you have it's a super
intense color so I'm going to need to
kind of tone it down a little bit I'm
going to go in with some burnt sienna
and you Priya what paper do you prefer
while using watercolors um my most
favorite is arches but I also like this
Fabriano this is very absorbent so if
you want if you don't like the very
absorbent paper there's also like a
handmade paper called new job' that I
really like umm you post fun but it's
definitely a very special effect to get
the type of paper there's I mean there's
something for everyone I would say
experiment find out what you like the
most
I'm adding a little a little blue in
here just to kind of darken it it might
make it look like rust in areas it might
make it look like mold in areas you want
it to look really kind of old and
weathered here the colors are also
listed in the video description if you
are laying out your paints
I usually just keep all my regulars this
is the these are all from the Turner set
of 18 as well and if you get the 5
milliliter tube set it's only $29 but
it's a better actually a better deal if
you get the 15 milliliter tube set for
$60 because you get more paint per
dollar but if you're just starting out
these are going to last you quite a
while so I won't feel pressured to get
the bigger one if you just want to try
them Cherie French Lindsey my first
paint was your beach scene with palm
tree coming out of the left hand side
yeah my husband saw me picking hairs
from the painting he immediately bought
me new brushes and over nice Cyrano
Griffiths do you recommend blending
colors to create more colors or by
colors in tubes I recommend starting
with a limited palette and mixing your
own because you're going to learn a lot
more about color a lot of colors are
manufactured because people will buy
them not because you need them now
certain colors do have certain
properties which you know you might be
able to mix the same color but the
granulation of it or the way it looks in
different lights would be you know
unique and different but if you have two
Reds two blues and two
you can pretty much mix whatever you
want using your basic colors I also like
to have SAP green and yellow ocher and
burnt sienna just because of their
unique qualities but you absolutely
could mix those hues with a split
complementary system which means you
have a cool red and a warm red and a
cool blue and a warm blue and a cool
yellow and a warm yellow I'm going to do
yellow ochre it's one of those fabulous
colors I just mentioned on this boat
here yellow ochre for me is one of those
colors that sweetens up painting it
seems to make things feel more natural
and it's kind of like if you've ever
used like a filter on your picture on
Instagram or whatever or in your photo
editing software and this one that I
particularly like called glamour and
what it does is it it warms your face
and removes the wrinkles so I think the
yellow ocher is like the glamour or the
Instagram filter of the art world and it
just does wonderful gram fill it does
wonderful wonderful things so then I'm
going to add some burnt sienna and I
like this because I prefer burnt sienna
- burnt umber because it's a warmer
color and it burnt umber doesn't seem to
have that much color to it and I know if
I add a little bit of ultramarine I can
knock it back to a gray or cool it down
it just says it's for me the most
versatile brown you may have a different
style you like to paint with so a
different Brown may suit you better or
mixing your own Brown might suit you
better but this is just a color I found
very useful and you might also like to
buy an individual tube of paint if it's
a color that you're always mixing just
to save you a little time because you
know it's one of your staple colors you
just love hazel mm life Lindsay how do
you keep your paper from bending while
drying my papers always seem to bend
during the drying process well it
depends on the paper you're using if
this is my little 10-minute study that I
did before the live stream and it is
definitely buckled it's only a 90-pound
aqua B paper and I didn't tape it down
or any things I just wanted to abort my
colors out and figure out whatever was
going to need for the tutorial but this
this is a block of paper so instead of
being like a pad where you pull off a
piece it's bound well you can see it's
kind of coming up here on the side but
it's bound like like the end of your
paper that usually by
but it's like that on all four side so
it keeps it pretty flat and this is also
a 140-pound and not 90-pound so if you
really don't want to buckle you can get
a 300 pound paper which is going to be
probably twice as much as 140 pound but
you don't have to worry about the
buckling which is which is worth it to
some people it's not worth it to me but
you know to each his own I'm going to
take a little ultramarine and burnt
sienna and I'm going to skip down to the
bottom of the painting and I'm going to
add some shadows under these little
stones that are free handed now they're
not on the reference photo there on the
pattern that I put on my blog because I
wanted this to not feel like it was in
the middle of the field I really wanted
it to be in the water or next to the
water rather I felt bad with the boats
being completely out of commission like
they're in the middle of a potato field
or nothing so I got I got it pick it
ahead pick it up so hope here that they
might actually see the water again they
might and I'm still using out fairly big
brush this is a number 12 round minute
kolinsky and if you're a beginner I
probably wouldn't recommend these
brushes there they hold so much water
and paint and sometimes beginners get in
trouble when they have too much water on
their brush and they delete things and
the paint goes crazy and they can't
control it so I would recommend an aqua
lawn around land nickel aqua lawn or
majestic brush if your absolute beginner
then graduate to these once you've
figured out how to control your paint
every material has its best uses for
something or someone but I love that I
can like paint for miles without
reloading my brush with this with these
um synthetic breasted brushes they act
like animal hair but they have no animal
fur in them but they still perform the
same way which I just adore okay and I'm
going to let those dry before I go in
and put highlights on the rock so
basically was just going through and
paintings of shadow I do felt like I
want a little more blue but I'm going to
do the ultramarine with the phthalo so
it's not too super super blue and I'm
tapping the extra off on my palette and
I'm just going to throw in a little bit
more and let it mix in with some of
those Browns
as a brown does seem a little Stark to
me
maybe it just rained or the wave just
came up and crashed and left a little
bit of water behind hasti Desai
sometimes watercolor is very light what
would you do well not using a natural
bristle brush or a faux natural bristle
bristle will help you get more pigment
and less water so that your colors will
be more intense generally when that
happens it's just you've got too much
water because your water colors are
probably the most vibrant of all paints
because it's just the pigment and the
paper and the light passing through the
pigment and bouncing off the paper and
back into your eyes so water colors
should be extremely vibrant at least one
useful strain now I'm going to grab some
of that phthalo blue again and I've wet
just the blue areas my boat there and
I'm going to just drop in the color and
let it go now I'm just about to want to
switch to a smaller brush I use my
largest brush as long as I can because
it keeps me from getting too fussy with
any details but when I feel like it's
gonna not do the job then I switch over
and sometimes when you're using colors
like say hello blue or phthalo green
they tend to stain your bristles you
might and they can be difficult to
remove so you might actually want to do
a soap and water wash after you've been
using those colors a lot Haru Haru do
you recommend the fabric a stell
paintbrushes favourite I've had
something or decent I didn't even know
they made paint right well they make
some that are like clear handle like or
colored handles and they sell them with
like the gelato multipacks
oh okay and those are decent I don't
know about any other ones of theirs but
I know those were pretty good they're my
sub synthetic brush I think they even
have them like they're little kids sets
too that they sell I'm going to do the
bottom here with just some Browns on my
palette it's like the brand with burnt
sienna basically I just want kind of a
dingy like it was painted black but it's
got dirt on it now and it's just kind of
a dingy color
and something you might notice is I
transferred my design with transfer
graphite paper which has a little bit of
a wax enos to it and my paints having a
hard time sticking to that on those
lines there so if you run into that
issue that's why not a big deal
you can probably overcome that just like
as you add layers of paint it'll become
a little bit easier to to cover it and
then I don't want to go up here quite
yet because that paint is still wet and
it's going to wick up so I think I'm
going to work on the rigging here of the
boat and I'm going to switch to a brush
called the liner and the nice thing
about this brush is that has really long
bristles and those really long bristles
are going to allow me to hold a lot of
paint so I can go and I can paint all
those and I don't have to keep going
back and I'm reloading so I'm going to
do altra marine blue and burnt sienna to
make a nice dark now the downside to
this is that this is good for long fluid
strokes you don't have the control that
you would have with a shorter bristled
brush so longer bristle equals more
paint but less control so I'm going to
start and it might help if you put your
arm down your table and you rest your
hand on top whether or you know if you
just had a couple cups of coffee it
might not be the best time you do this
technique I'm probably good good I got
to be careful to lay my arm right in
that those rocks that I just painted but
I'm going to try here and just pull a
long stroke
you can work pretty quickly it'll keep
feeding out paint for like fairly fairly
quickly GPC 13 art can you do paintings
with alcohol inks on you bow paper yes
you can
yeah it's very good for that
because it's like it's a plastic paper
when you're painting your riggings think
of where your strings are - are tied up
and what they're getting tied to to help
you pull the straight taut lines the way
they're supposed to go Anu Priya what
brand of watercolor would you recommend
for a beginner the lucas is good it's
high-quality and it's not that expensive
and also the Turner which I'm eating
today is high quality not very expensive
I want to work on the grass a little bit
more it's pretty light and if you want
to go back to my big you know what if
you even go to a flat brush actually I'm
going to go to a three quarter inch wash
and I'm going to mix up some SAP green
here and I'm going to start adding I'm
just going to add some tap in some
ground underneath this little boat here
I'm going to show you a technique once
this once I can pull this out a little
bit and have a little bit of a drier
brush I'll show you a couple techniques
first technique is I'm going to grab my
smaller brush and add some shadow color
in there and I'm going to go with my
mixed gray and I'll pression blue to it
I'm just going to add that right into
that shadow there just to give it a
little bit of depth ah
Kellyanne Jones how do you learn to mix
the right colors is it from practice or
is there a formula practice and I'd like
to remind people please type your
questions in all caps I know I've been
missing some but most people aren't
typing them in caps so I'm not
necessarily catching all the questions
yeah you can use a color wheel to help
you mix your colors but generally it's
practice you'll that's the best way to
learn you can know all the theory about
AB until you
what brushed a paper it's really
difficult I'm just gonna spread out that
shadow a little bit okay so now what I'm
doing here I want my brush to be kind of
dry so I've just dipped right into the
cake of color and just sprayed in my
bristles out and this isn't going to
hurt anything and then I'm just going to
flick I need a little bit more water in
there I just want to make it I want to
have individual blade blades of grass
I'm just going to do that here and there
not everywhere and only in this kind of
mid area here where we'd actually be
able to see some of that I'm going to
grab a little yellow ochre and some
chopped green again do some warmer
blades like maybe they've been bleached
by the Sun and they're closer so they're
a little bit darker you know and taps
them on that just led to your brush if
you want to if that's easier not a bad
idea anyway to make things be a little
more random and then I'm going to go
back in with my larger brush and soften
up some of the areas that look a little
too fussy you can also use a fan or a
rake a brush for this purpose if you
have them but as you can see it's pretty
easy to get those effects without uh JLT
110 110 I have a set of watercolor
pencils from China they have no numbers
any ideas for marking them also can I
paint 5 by 7 sheets of watercolor paper
than just a card base maybe as a card
base sure they make yeah one color card
you know with just the watercolor paper
right right yeah that's it like the
Strathmore cards I use are just it's
just Strathmore watercolor paper just a
cut
hazal mmm life Lindsay I know this might
be weird but my cat absolutely loves
watching your painting video oh she's
slamming in my phone when I'm watching
your videos huh
we have a request for an orchid painting
and how to draw a sky I do have several
orchid painting tutorials if they
haven't found those I have like four or
five on my channel if you just go on my
channel or my blog and you searched
orchid painting you'll get like oils in
watercolor versions at susan carson to
flatten wavy watercolors i sprayed the
back of the painting then pressed
between paper towels under heavy books
came out flat as a pancake wonderful
great idea thank you
oh right and I'm just taking a little
water down Prussian blue on my dirty
brush and just adding it up near the
horizon and bringing it down and that's
just going to cool off the distant the
distant field and I'm gonna let that dry
and I think I'm all set to go in and
work on the little cabin on that fishing
boat there and I just waited there was I
was just touching my paper with the back
of my hand to see if that area was dry
yet it seems to be dry enough to go on
it's not perfectly room temperature yet
but I think we'll be fine
now I'm going to go in with burnt sienna
and my yellow ochre again and a little
too orange to me I'll pull my howl it
over so you can see it my chickens this
treatment ha ha ha what are you doing
there guys no chicken yelling when I go
out back they come running because I
usually bring them like food cereal or
salad or oatmeal or something ah

bookbinding it's kind of a
time-consuming process so I I don't do
it too often but I do have a bookbinding

taught mixed media hoping to do some
sort of watercolor next year I think I
think I think they'll let me there you
know your first when you're first
teaching in a show they want to make
sure you could fill a class before they
let you go a little too bananas with
what you want to teach and I think I'm
gonna dab on some darker burnt sienna
just less watery what are you giggling

live in mean where did summer go I don't
know but I went with Mac because I guess
we can't complain but it was nice having
those 75 80 degree days I wish they were
back we had our winter coats on last
night watching a baseball game actually
I got out Maisie was pitching I got out
watched a pitch and I went right back in
the truck I'm like okay I can't I gotta
watch the truck it's too cold I'm a wimp
uh well I yesterday I was like oh I'll
go for a walk and then I put my head
outside was like nope and stuck it back
in and sat on the couch and watched some
doctor who episode oh that sounds nice
whoa ah doing a little while working on
a cross-stitch project so that's as far
as I got
I don't blame you oh my gosh he did run
the dishwasher what to undertook the
project of painting my sofa which is not
a project a DIY project for the faint of
heart I decided I didn't have enough
paint so I got more paint on order I've
got a half way painted sofa it's my
husband's giving me funny looks when it
comes to but he's very
yeah he is crazy Shaq one how can you
get over a bad painting day and I tend
to be my own worst critic how can I get
over the stumbling block oh boy
walk away yeah walk away I'm Dean else I
find um cleaning I like I'll clean my
craft area cuz usually I'll find other
things that I want to work on or at
least I'll be like hey you bad paintings
better than good cleaning so you know
like it's me back to creating again
roving alatau how do you clean your
acrylic paint brushes I use a masters
brush cleaner it's a it's in a
cream-colored little cake plastic
container with a little cake inside and
that works great I will rinse them out
in water and keep them the water until
I'm ready to wash them and then I just
use that brush cleaner and it works
really well and you can get that in any
craft supply store you do that Jerry's
they make it in different sizes I don't
get the big tubs because you don't go
through that throw it that quickly and
if you don't join it how good it can get
gummy and gross so I think I'm good just
dealing with a smaller little tubes of
it and I mean I don't use a like artist
acrylic but I use craft acrylic for
projects I'll just use either a little
hand soap or a little dawn dish
detergent and rub them in the palm of my
hand oh yeah just because I don't have
any special paint cleaning but I find
that works really well because you can
get you know loosens everything up and
you know you've a hand soap or dawn
doesn't you know ruin the bristles mhm
I also don't have expensive paintbrushes
so but you know for those who don't earn
more money with acrylic paint well you
know why was so Forks really well - it
does have pumice in it so they might
flag your bristles so I would be a
little care cautious but um it does
really cut the grease good in it if even
if I don't clean my brushes with it I it
gets the stuff off my hands which can
linger for quite a while yes John also
usually have an orange hand so oh yes a
go Joe is that what's called a dress in
the shop that works pretty well it does
I don't think it has any grit in it but
what
and it helps break up all the junk on
your hand yeah yeah the most important
thing is just to get to them soon before
it becomes a problem before it gets dry
yeah I'm using the chisel edge of this
and this is just an acrylic simply
Simmons brush and I'm just using it to
tap on these little I don't know what
they look like kinda like rusty lines on
the boat but it looks like there might
be seams of like where the how the boat
was made I don't know but so I'm putting
that in there and I'm out then I'm going
to dab in some watery burnt see and just
kind of let it maybe drizzle down those
lines probably don't have it watery
enough I like to control the edge of
this brush though and I think I'll add
just some little bits of rust here and
there between this and the lobster track
video you guys are going to be really
good at texture and weathering and
getting those techniques with watercolor
that's good that's kind of a challenge
when you're doing watercolor because you
can't just keep slopping on you know
more paint you've got to cut you better
work with a white of your paper and you
have to plan it a little bit more well I
hope seem to look fresher roving alatau
how do you know that you have a good
quality paint transparency for
watercolors is a big giveaway like if
it's nice and transparent then it's
generally a good quality paint
brightness if it dries in your palette
like this and doesn't crack and fall out
that's a good quality if you do have a
lesser quality paint or student quality
you can add honey to it or add glycerin
to it to help it perform more like a
higher quality paint that will keep the
moisture in it and make it a little bit
easier to reconstitute when you go to
paint usually if you wet your brush and
you put it on the cake of color if it
pops right up if it comes like releases
color really well then it's a good
quality paint I'm looking at the light
fastness ratings most good you know
reputable brands they buy from really
kind of you think of like famous brands
those are going to be good quality
because they're not going to skimp on
materials that's how they got their
reputation is by using good quality
stuff but everyone
has their own their own favorites
because of the you know different
abilities each thing has all right we're
going to move down to this boat now and
we are going to mix up some burnt sienna
and ultramarine blue get ourselves a
nice dark kind of nice using two
different shades of blue here usually
we'll do one of the other but it's nice
to have the have both of them going so
what I have here is a nice dark and I'm
going to go into the back area of the
boat and paint that dark so we're
shading here giving it that it's getting
caught in the shadows there our Sun our
light source is over it's kind of like
coming in like that so well yeah it's
kind of like coming in that way so we'd
have some shadow over there and behind
the boats like that so this is it's
coming coming from behind the boat so
this we get the shadow inside the boat
here and again refer to the reference
photo that I linked in the video
description for more information and you
can by using a synthetic brush like this
acrylic painting brush I'm not getting
an excess of amount of water on here so
I'm able to control and keep my colors
dark so that's another reason I've just
kind of been sticking with us because
it's working really well ah
Phyllis Mosely Lindsay how do you choose
a matte color to coordinate with the
colors in your paintings um well it
depends if I'm going to sell it if I'm
mounting it to sell I'll often go with
white just because most people prefer
white and actually white cream and black
or probably the colors I use the most
but just I try to find something that
that pulls the color from the image in a
flattering way that doesn't distract you
don't want to color it's going to
distract from your painting you want to
call it's going to enhance it some
colored mats are will will distract and
white your best back so it gives you
your brain a little space to rest but
other times using like that I made like
a yellow curry or cream-colored matte
really pulls out the design because it
gives you that little extra it makes a
color see more prominent that's in here
like if I used a red mat it would make
that boat seem a little bit more
it would pull out any time I use that
red in here so it just depends on your
own personal aesthetic if you know
you're keeping it and you want to hang
it in a certain room then you know you
in that room has a lot of that red color
in it you might want to matte it in red
and use like a like a tan match that
like matches one of the boats in there
as your frame a lot of times if I'm
using color I'll use a double mat so
that I've just got a little bit of that
color reveal but I also have that white
space so you know there's there's a lot
of different a lot of different ways you
can look at it it is because I disagree
as far as matching the training or
matting to your walls or your ear room
only because a word did framing for
awhile and we saw some beautiful pieces
of art come in framed in you know cherry
stained wood with a white matte because
you know it was cherry wood in the
living room and white walls and that's
what they've added this beautiful piece
of artwork in and it looked awful and I
uh and sometimes you could show people
some other options and they would be
open to it and other times people that
was what they wanted customer's always
right
yeah smile and put in the order for that
no I always encourage people to not
necessarily match walls or wood tone if
you know if it looks good that's good
but a lot of times it you know you have
to go with what the piece needs yeah
well that's why I don't like I I don't
spend too much on matting things I'm
gonna sell because chances are people
are going to change it you know they're
going to so I try to keep it kind of
neutral yes
so the artwork shows but I mean if you
have like a decor that you like you've
got a sofa that's that color you've got
accent pieces of them now and you have
it in a painting as well then you know
that works out really well I mean if and
if you are a person that is very much
because I am NOT a matchy-matchy person
but there are people who prefer you know
a very well coordinated living please
the artwork you pick should reflect the
decor instead of force
the artwork - man that's just me you've
seen my house Lindsay I'm not but you
got managed man you have a lot of earth
tones going though lots of rich earth
tones yes but nothing is I don't have
sets of anything
eclectic yes I like a collective I like
eclectic - I'm doing the bottom of this
boat with a little bit of the burnt
sienna with less ultram rings I don't
want it too dark
I'm just going to drag some of that into
the ribs of the boat hasti Desai I
apologize if I mispronounced your name
is outlining a watercolor painting
important or there's no need to give it
a black outline or a border outlining um
I don't know what do you mean oh
absolutely I don't like yet the images
like you know how if you do illustration
there's usually an outline around
whatever the images I think it's
personal preference you don't have to do
it some people like it some people don't
some people can't stand their pencil
lines and they erase them after they're
done painting incomplete personal
preference I think I'm gonna add some
shadow at the bottom of the boat here
where it kind of bends in and again I'm
still using this those same colors I
might just alter the amount of something
and I feel like I want a little bit of
just kind of like dirt on the edge of
the boat it's a little too stark still
I'm going to go with a little SAP green
I want to get a little algae in there we
have several people working on the
Lobster Shack pinky oh good fun that was
fun I saw somebody do it and call it
pencils and they shared it well in that
round and that was beautiful yeah it
would be a fun one to do in color pencil
yex of all the texture yeah yeah yeah
it's a bit of a challenge to do all that
texture and watercolor and that's
something you can always grab another
media like color pencil and and go over
it and you know get get your work to the
point where you want it with another
media there's nothing wrong with it
only if you're trying to exhibit it as a
watercolor that's the only time you're
going to have any any problem with it I
could let that dry a bit and I'm going
to redefine the bottom inside of the
boat but while I'm waiting I'm gonna go
and add some shadows on the ground and
I'm going to go with I'm just gonna add
SAP green to that Brin sienna
ultramarine blue mix that I've already
made I think I'll add a little push and
blue into that too I was just cleaning
up my pallet using the stuff I already
head out and I'm going to go in next to
this boat here pull it away from that
one next to it and a little bit over
here that I'll spread out in a second
and add some of that here and then pull
my brush and I'll drag the shadows out a
little bit
so it looks natural and I feel like I
need a little something there because
it's um it just looks a little too like
it just looks like it's floating so I'm
gonna shut and put something down in
here we don't need floating boats
although they'd be kind of surreal it
would be interesting to see a floating
boat dinner I'm sure dr. who could make
it happen I'm sure with the space whale
I vote I just finished season three just
already I haven't watched the first
episode of season four yeah of the
reboot yeah yeah with mr. Tennant oh yes
sherry French because of the videos I no
longer see the color white I see blues
Grey's lavenders etc but not white oh

turtle how do you shadow yellows like
yellow flowers what colors would you use
um you can do like greens you can do
Purple's you just got to watch out for
mud greens are usually an easier bet
just because it's not going to make mud
something's like a cerulean blue like a
very non like I'll show you he like this
color right here if you water that down
maybe out of touch a magenta to it so
you have a very blue based purple that's
a very weak you can overlay with that
Glee
/ with it and get yourself a nice shadow
those would be my top recommendations
I'm going back to the liner because I
want to do the rest of these this
rigging here and we're just about done
actually and I'm going back in with my
I'm going to do burnt sienna and
ultramarine blue on Sarah

paper yes I have it's very interesting
I've only had a small sample of it to
use but um it's it's it's so funny
because it's kind of toothy because you
like it grips your media but it's very
smooth at the same time it's a it's a
stone based paper it's very interesting
it works with pastel it works with
watercolor it's a very versatile paper
it's supposedly made of stone and
doesn't use very much water to produce
never even heard stuff it does feel a
little gimmicky to me like it's not
something that I want to use all the
time but it was very interesting alright
Deanna DIY 22 what's your favorite
watercolor to use I really like em
Graham um and I think part of that is
just because it's what I got first when
I bought like my first professional
watercolors but there's this tons of
great ones I like these Turner's I'd
like to get more of the Turner's I just
have the set of 18
mean I would like to experiment with
some of their other colors I just
haven't gotten around to it yet because
the price can't be beat which I like
that I like that you can get a quality
you don't have to worry about wasting it
because the price isn't too bad but yeah
I like that I like da Vinci I like Lucas
is all right it's not my absolute
favorite because I really like
transparency and it's a little more
opaque than I like but it's very highly
pigmented and a very inexpensive paint
so you know you could definitely paint
with it with confidence it kind of
reminds me of the Prima paints
definitely the student look just reminds
me of the Prima paints just because of
the do pay city but you know some people
prefer a little more of an opaque
gouache like paint is you know personal
preference I like putting these lines
that are kind of drapey the the cording
or ropes that they're tied down to
exciting kit adds a nice organic element
next to all these hard kind of straight
lines so see if you can find a way to
incorporate some of those whenever you
have a painting that's a little bit too
harsh now there was like kind of like an
anchor off of that boat and I think I
think I'm going to turn it to a rope
instead because when I think of adding
something like that to that painting it
doesn't really I don't think I want to
put it there so I'm going to admit that
omit that detail that I put in the
pattern and I'm gonna turn that into a
rope just kind of draped off or pulled
from the edge of the boat Ian Jackson
just got some Derwent 24 set aqua tone
pencils and thinks they're great oh good

I but that is a good shop to buy from if
their YouTube channel is any indication
all right so I'm just kind of looking
over this and seeing if there's anything
else I want to add I think it's a good
idea to darken up parts at the bottom of
the boat because it just makes it ground
it a little bit more and I don't want to
I want it to still remain kind of
weather looking so I'm just kind of
dabbing in some of that darker color
that I just made and I wanted to define
make them up a little bit more of that
burnt sienna ultramarine mix so I can
define the bottom of that boat there
which is looking a little little too
mushy I always wanted a flat bottom
fishing boat like this even though I
don't fish I just seems like it would be
kind of fun to have one I prefer a party
boat oh well I would prefer a party boat
but I think I'm more of the flat bottom
fishing boat budget type of a boat what
