Tea Time with Strawberries // Watercolor Full Real Time Tutorial Video

hi there Lindsay here the frugal crafter
the other day our reviewed the mission
gold paints and I did this demo except
it made the video way too long so I
decided that I would do the demo in a
separate video and that is what this is
so if you're interested in the review
that I just did on the mission gold
paints I'll put a button you can click
up there in the corner or in the video
description so you can find that but
this video is a demonstration on how to
paint these strawberries in a bowl and a
little teacup so let's get to it I think
I'll just kind of start by flicking on
some water getting some of the
background wet I want to have kind of a
painterly feeling to this I know I am
NOT going to spend a ton of time on this
painting so I want to kind of make it
interesting by doing that and maybe I'll
stick with this big brush and let's
start with some yellow ochre I'm just
using a palette that was from dr. pH
Martin's to use with their products or
liquid products so it's not what I would
typically pick but um but that's alright
so let's yellow ochre on its own super
clear it's probably brighter than what I
would typically want for a yellow ochre
so I'm going to grab a little bit of the
Van Dyck Brown
there's no burnt sienna in this except
there is an Indian red and the mazzello
burnt sienna is a mix and there's a
recipe to make it in a little pamphlet
but I like to I really like to mix by
eye instead of by recipe and how like I
cook but I'm much more successful when
it's paint and not food I'm just making
sure since I squeezed this out last
night I don't have too much any big gobs
of paint on there and I'm really
diluting this down and this is a really
thirsty brush and I think I'm also going
to try I won't try making a grey with my
pression blue because I don't typically
use Prussian that's an
interesting-looking color and the the
Indian Rex I think or even
prilae perylene maroon
I think the oppression at any of those
Browns did actually make it really nice
nice grey let me go with Prussian and
Indian red though because I think
I'll use that Indian red also near the
strawberries so let's get that I'm
making sure to rinse my brush like I
said I I am working with paints I just
recently squeezed out I don't know if
the Indian red is strong enough to
overcome the Prussian blue I am getting
a little bit of a purple tint to that
but oh but when I get it down there and
it's it's on the paper looks quite dark
and nice so I like that go in and put
some shadows in there it's got a dry
lighter because um there's a lot of
water I'm working with a super super
juicy brush I'm going to be switching
over to a smaller brush in a moment that
I wanted to get some loose background in
I basically just want to see what the
colors do I don't want to fuss with this
too much I kind I kind of want muted
earth tones here for the background now
if I do get into any of the images
because where I flipped the paint on
it's not going to mess anything up and
I'm working on a fairly rough paper
which isn't typically what I would use
first to life but but again I kind of
felt like I wanted that texture to show
like kind of what the paint would do I'm
just trying to kind of keep in my light
areas from getting too murky but I also
want the paint to do with it what it
wants I've been so inspired I've been on
the world watercolor or a month Facebook
group and it's been so inspiring and
awesome to see what people are creating
with watercolor and it just it kind of
reinvigorates you when you see what
other people are passionate about
creating I find it invigorating anyway
and I'm just lifting out some areas and
I'm just going to soften any bits of
table that don't have anything going oh
that's a strawberry so I don't really
want to paint over that but I'm going to
soften that edge cuz I don't want any
hard edges
I find that I can really kind of sculpt
everything and soften things just with a
damp brush especially when I'm working
with more earthier pigments okay so so
far this is what we have I'm going to
dry this and come back and we will paint
some more details on okay I'm going to
start integrating some of my other
colors in here so I think that for the
brightest red I've got so many really
nice reds here and I might use a couple
of them I like the Rose madder off a lot
I like the permanent red deep those two
colors are really nice so I think I'm
going to start with the Rose madder and
I have to look at my chart because I
laid out my chart how I put them in the
palette here it's almost in rainbow
order except I should have put mixed I
should have moved the cerulean closer to
the blue I was closer to the green
rather but that's not a big deal so I'm
going to start going into some of these
strawberries and I am using a soft
pretty wet brush and just kind of
hitting the brighter areas then I think
I want to I feel like I want a little
bit of yellow ochre in there something
just to kind of warm some of it
and then I think we'll go with the
permanent red deep and do some work on
the edges let's see where that one was
right here it's kind of deceiving
looking at you I really recommend that
you make a chart whenever you're trying
new watercolors and you can see my pain
is kind of catching the edge of the the
texture of the paper and making it want
to kind of skip a little bit and I think
I also want to mix a little bit of a
dark so I was using oppression earlier
so I'm going to stick with it Prussian
blue and adds a permanent red deep to it
and see what I get I think if I add the
Rose madder I'm going to get more of a
purple I think this I'll just get a nice
rich deep red if I do that there this is
giving me a nice rich deep red and I'm
just gonna add that little Valley there
hopefully it's not too dead of a color
and add it over there into the shadow
and strawberries have a little bit of a
texture to them so I'm not worried about
this being released smooth and I can
always use my razor to pull out some bit
seeds later so or color pencil if I feel
like I don't want to keep it transparent
watercolor now this one maybe I'll do
the shadow first since I've got that on
my brush already and it will help me
define the edge of this strawberry and
it is kind of on the sling on the table
so that's where the shadow would be so
that works out sorry I sound really
mellow I'm just kind of chillin it's the
weekend and let's do what was the color
were using Rose madder so all the colors
in this set are pure pigment and that's
nice because the colors will mix very
vibrantly although I have to say after
trying this and I've been mixing colors
they have the recipe for their other
Mazzello colors in the the pamphlet as
I'm working I'm thinking you know I and
I've seen so many people use the other
set the set of 36 that has the smaller
tubes and more colors I really think
the paint seems very pure and I don't
think I'd be disappointed if I went with
the other set the non pure pigment set
granted this had larger tubes and all
single pigments so that's why I went
with this versus the other one but I
really don't think you know I really
don't think either would be a bad deal
and I'm just doing a little yellow ochre
cuz I did on the other one I feel like
um I want to highlight a little bit so
I'm gonna just kind of blow with that
tissue and just kind of leave it try not
to overdo it's very tempting and I'm
just I just felt like I wanted to get
read right in even though it seems
probably pretty shocking um I just
wanted to get that in here for some
reason I decided I wanted to let this
one first I'm not exactly sure why I'm
gonna go to my shadow though and get
that right in there so I can get the
shape back I thought about doing this as
a speedpaint
and I was going to because you know kids
are running around upstairs and
laundry's going and so we can you know
we can stuff but then I thought this is
a new paint and I think if I talk
through kind of different stuff as I'm
working on it it might be helpful for
those of you considering investing a
Miss paint like I said if you're buying
this domestically it's very expensive
paint it's it's more expensive than
Windsor Newton but for some crazy reason
on Amazon you can get it very cheap and
usually I find that I don't find deals
on paint on Amazon I end up paying more
then then whatever Amazon has it for so
I'm not sure why this is maybe it's
coming directly from the company but but
yeah I mean six of the tubes and this
kit are $30 tubes
according to MSRP and uh at Jerry's and
blick and I don't I don't understand I
don't understand why I can get it so
much cheaper on Amazon that's usually
not the case so I'm just tapping on a
little texture here with the permanent
red deep these are fun colors I'm really
having a good time with these and I
think maybe I really yellow ocher to the
highlight on that middlebury I guess if
you guys don't if you guys would prefer
to be paint go ahead and change this a
little gear at the bottom of the at the
bottom of the
age if you're watching on YouTube on the
player and you can make it double speed
if you want to and just you know mute me
so I don't sound like a deranged
chipmunk but you know that'll work
okay so the water pump just went on I'm
just going to show you what I'm doing
here I'm going to put in some of the
colors I've been using because I'm going
to treat this massive strawberries as if
it's one strawberry and we did get our
underwater pump like a couple months ago
so it's not quite as crazy as it used to
be and then I'm going to put in my
permanent red deep so we'll just do this
part together then I will pause it so
you don't have to listen to that but
like I said I'm treating this like it's
one berry and then we can go in and add
more details later you're really going
to add water to this because holy moly
these colors are super strong so
sometimes I find that like I'm like
painting a flower that's got tons of
little flowers like a lilac or a
hydrangea I treat the group as one and
then I'll go in and add details to a few
I'm not going to put the shadow color in
at this point because I'll do that to
help break them apart hope that makes
sense and go into the Rose madder now
and like I want to show you here I'm
just doing the red brush the the red the
the wet brush just wiggling it against
whoops you can't even see that sorry
will going that against the little
droplet appeal I put and that is going
to that's all I need so you might want
to squirt this on your palate let it dry
before you use it if you have a hard
time or work with a really juicy brush
if you're a hard time getting enough
water on your paint and then just for a
little texture I am going to bunch this
up and just kind of stamp it down okay
and let me let this dry and we'll come
back after the water pump shuts off okay
everything has quieted back down here in
the basement and I think I'm going to
switch to a flat brush and I'm going to
work on the the cup here might go to a
smaller flat brush but I'm gonna see how
this three quarter one works for the
time being I liked my pression blue
Indian red yellow ocher mix so I think I
might continue with that for the shadows
like I always recommend don't were too
crazy with colors just because you have
24 colors doesn't mean you have to use
all 24 colors okay so I'm just going to
kind of get in there I think I'm going
to want a smaller brush to tell you the
truth but we'll do what we can deal with
this and I just I want my brushstrokes
to show so I am being pretty choppy and
then when you mugs are kind of funny
when you have a mug like this you often
will have the opposite shattered on the
inside so I'm actually going to mix up a
little bit more the thing I don't like
about this palette and I'll show you
right here is that a flat brush it's
difficult to get a flat brush in there
there we go and I'm gonna add this um
back here I'm being stubborn I should
have are I should switch to a smaller
brush I'm a big Brush girl though I like
big brushes and I cannot lie but yeah
seriously I mean Lily totally botched
this if I don't switch chosen all the
rushed hang on sec all right if I was
just toss it will grab will go to a half
inch I'm going to half inch uh this is
oh this is my elven brush you know what
I've had this since I was seven no yeah
seven years old that's a long time but
take care your brushes they will last
you so moral to that story and stop
doing the math I know you're doing the
math you wondering how old is that brush
mm-hmm
brush is over 30 all right they're kind
of like that I'm gonna be warming up do
that right now I want to warm up the
inside I'm a little yellow ocher in
there and what a little tip that I have
is that I will kind of wet my brush a
little bit of the dirty mix on my palate
and that helps me from getting anything
too vibrant with these paints because
they are super vibrant so I don't
necessarily want to let them mix right
on my paper because it's just a little
much for for this because they're super
vivid pigments I mean I'm really pleased
that I chose these because I kind of
hemmed and hawed and I was thinking all
that price because they've been they've
been on a pretty good sale on Amazon for
a while and I'm just thinking are they
really good but that way when I start
researching and seeing the regular price
and seeing all the like the reviews on
the art supply store sites where they
were selling them for you know twenty
twenty-five dollars a tube were amazing
the reviews are still good at that price
so I'm like well I guess you know I
guess I could try that not crazy
expensive I paid like I said $86 for
this set of 24 but the retail value of
that would have been over five hundred
when I added everything up so it's not
like you use up watercolor very quickly
either I kind of like pulled over to
that pink
from that strawberry onto my mug because
it's ceramic it would reflect but I
might grab it right from the from the
palette though so I don't mess up that
strawberry I'm gonna do the same over
here too even though it's not my
reference photo just just because I have
experience painting and looking at
things in the world I know that it would
be and this is like a little tea packet
I'm just kind of get that in a little
bit just get a little color on that and
I'm pretty much sticking to the colors
that I've been using and I kind of
wanted rush strokes to show
I'm also more of a round brush person a
flat brush person and then going back to
the bigger brush because I'm getting
kind of bogged down with a smaller one
and I want to put some more shadows on
the table I'm going to go ahead and mix
up a little bit more shadow color with
my Indian red and my pression blue more
red like I mention Etta very strong
colors can be difficulty at the bounce
just right make sure you only gobs of
paint on your brush especially if
they're you just squirted it out I'm
really hoping that that this looks that
looks pretty bright in my monitor I'm
hoping that it's not washed out so I'm
actually going to wet some of the area
that I'm going to be putting the shadow
into because I want that to be a little
softer I've got plenty of brushstrokes
showing in the background wash so just
want to have a little bit of softness
there let it kind of fade out let the
ceramics kind of be bright against the
background
I like big juicy brushes because they
hold a lot of paint and you can't fuss
with them too much and it will dry
lighter you know it's watercolors that's
one of their characteristics
now I sketch directly on my paper today
and I was kind of concerned that it kind
of wanted I wanted to see my brush I
want to see my pencil marks and I was
concerned that the erasing that I did I
did a little erasing what it was going
to mess it up but it seems like it's
alright I did see a little little bit of
mark there but I think it's just a
little piece of dust or something little
fuzzy little hair so seem to have dodged
that bullet all right I'm going to
soften up some of the edges since this
is a fairly rough paper I do need to
work with a wetter brush to get my
paints to go where I want them so
there's just something to think about if
you feel like your paints aren't moving
the way you want them to could just be
here and I'm going to just put a few
other little colors in here like one a
little more warmth on the table so I'm
adding a little bit of yellow
and then I think I will just kind of
randomly pounce with my paper towel just
to take some of that away because I had
quite a bit all righty now I'm going to
do a little bit more to the mug I kind
of wish that I had used a van Dyck Brown
because that brown in this kit is a
little bit more neutral rather than
having to mix down the Indian red every
time that's getting a little old so when
when you um if you get these paints they
actually have they recommend putting
them in a palette where you put your
colors together that you would mix a lot
like you put your three colors for burnt
sienna together you put your two color
for SAP green in the same well probably
so that you can eliminate some of the
mixing time as you're painting I was
resistant to that idea but as I'm
messing with this making my own burnt
sienna ish color I can see where that
would have its merit you know it also
has me considerating I have enough paint
to choke a horse I really don't need any
more paint but um it does kinda have me
considering picking up the other
inexpensive set of 36 with a palette
that they have on sale just because I
just because I like these and if I had
some mixed colors it wouldn't make these
last longer and all of that in a Belize
stuff that I think of when I am trying
to get into myself to or not to buy
something but like I mentioned I mean
they're not sponsoring this this is just
just what I'm thinking at the moment
little more yellow there on that top of
the handle with lights hitting it and
I'm going to do that little tea bag I
think it's fairly dry around there
whoops that's not that what I was using
let me grab a little bit of this looking
out of the picture on my monitor on my
computer monitor and it's on battery
mode so it it keeps up fading on me but
that's alright because I'll kind of go
buy my own
my experience at you know painting to
fill in a lot of things I don't like to
rely too heavily on a reference photo I
want a little blue in there to darken
that up it kind of made my tea tag a
little bit fatter than it was originally
I should probably be using a smaller
brush too but I like big brushes and I
cannot lie there okay now while I'm at
it since I have kind of that color on my
brush I am going to make some shadow I'm
going to do the shadows um in my in my
strawberries and I am going to use a
little bit more of the soap got three
colors I've got the rose madder I've got
the permanent red deep and I've got the
Prussian blue so it's really kind of a
deep dark maroon color that I've got
going here and I'm still with the same
big brush and we'll see I'm gonna see
what I like to work my biggest brushes
that I can handle and then I go smaller
if I need to so I'm putting in the crisp
shadows and then I will soften it with a
with a damp brush it almost looks black
just because the colors are so intense
and transparent but once I get once I
give it softened out I think I think
we'll be in business
all right okay so let's rinse that off
and I think I will switch to a slightly
smaller brush and kind of push those
colors around a little bit and just kind
of let them work out a little bit I'm
just kind of touching the edge of the
paint with my brush my brush is just
damp and I am rinsing because as you
like I might you want to wet an area
first and then kind of go in and guide
it with my brush and I'm going to turn
my paper because I want to be at a
comfortable angle so I don't end up with
any weird awkward bits if I'm trying to
force it you that's when you get the
weird weird stuff happening I'm going to
need to pop up the colors a little bit
more because I've blotted too much out
let's get these shadows in first and
then we can add a little more of the
fresh reds if you can start to get the
shapes now here and let's go in with
that rose madder get the nice fresh red
in there again
it's helping with the painterly aspect
of this I think and then maybe a little
bit more of the red deep permanent red
deep
and I'm afraid if I add any more yellow
then it's going to muddy when it hits
that the blue because I mixed a purple
so I'm just kind of going in and wiping
out highlights with a clean brush just
kind of wipe my brush off when there
grab that highlight like to highlight
away wipe off my brush kind of do that
wherever I feel like it needs it and
then that dark looks a little dark I
feel like I need to pull that out or
lift some of that off okay now I want to
mix some green for the stems I'm going
to try the yellow ocher impression blue
since I haven't worked with another
yellow yet here today so I figure let's
try to see what we can get this way so I
don't have to I'm getting a decent green
right there see I think I'll use ax I
really don't want to bring in something
else at this point I'm a little late in
the game to be doing that and I'm just
gonna go in and paint a little
strawberry all's I kind of don't like
how opaque this is but I'd rather stick
to the same colors maybe add a little
water to it can translucent it up a
little bit yellow ochre tends to be a
opaque color in that pression blue looks
very minerally so I think that that's
why we have such a opaque color there
luckily there's not too much of it here
that I need to paint so I would have
gone whether I would have introduced a
brighter yellow I guess is what I'm
saying if I had to do this again but at
this stage I don't like to pull in new
colors you do what you want to do that
lets up to you
I really don't like that color wondering
if maybe I drop in some and this is
where we get into our fixing oh and if I
drop in some watery yellow ocher if I
can kind of liven it up a little bit oh
that's better so you know and that's why
a limited palette I feel like makes
artists better because you have to come
up with ways to make the colors or make
the values that you want you can't just
grab a tube of whatever you have to
think about it and it makes you better
it makes you better paint adult comics
like a pineapple though I'm not really
crazy about what's going on back there
but but whatever I'm not gonna worry
about it okay so now um what I'm going
to do here because I don't want to use
white and the tea bag string would be
white is what I'm going to do is paint
kind of a shadow on either side of it
see if I can pull out that tea bag
string that way I'm gonna pull it on
either side
and then clean my brush blot my brush
and fade it out all you got to do is get
a hint
that's all painting is it's suggesting a
lot of times later on this side so I'm
really watering it and I could do it a
little bit of reflection from that tool
able to because it's probably red on the
other side so oh that's super dark huh
that's not what I did I do that that's
not what I meant to do we'll do a little
bit over there too since we've already
done this we're gonna we're gonna repeat
it actually like that little shock of
red so we're just gonna we're just gonna
pretend like it was on purpose
well Green in there too if we want to
that's kind of like of a water colors
that little spontaneous stuff that can
happen I'm leaving it that bright I
actually like it I think it's fun you
can do whatever you want to do like not
make the mistake to begin with that's
that's an option give it a little bit of
that green in my in my bowl too because
ceramics would reflect all these lovely
things all these lovely colors maybe not
quite that much but I can soften that up
with some water
I do like I'd like what's going on there
like that green on there go with the
spontaneity have fun with it okay so I
want to make sure that looks like a
teabag packet so what I'm going to do is
paint a little cup of tea on there
and be very vague with it okay me know
that I've agamous tall the word tea so I
guess it's not really thick I need to
learn something about subtlety subtlety
get it I'm gonna drip a little uh
Prussian blue in there just cuz that
yellow is awfully same II just need to
hint and what this is it's a tea bag
pack and luckily that is clear could it
be any more loud and clear okay I'll
title is painting the thing in the
corner is a tea bag packet that would be
make it a little bit more clear I like
the Reds but you know that's something
to conceive a ware of if you're
considering buying this set that you're
getting a lot of red and if you're not
as much of a fan of red as I am you
might not care for that as much as I do
okay so now um I think I want to put
some more I need to define the bowl in
the mug a little bit more and it
honestly didn't intend for this to be
such a long tutorial so hopefully you
guys don't mind I guess you'd be long
gone if you did mind so I'm just making
myself some grey with those the blue in
the brown that I've been using that
Indian red and the Prussian blue and I'm
just gonna start adding kind of sharper
shadows I guess um help carve out the
shape of some of these but and I don't
want to do everything because that way
if my if I have things aren't really the
accurate I don't want to do everything
because I did just a very quick sketch
here and if I Phi X and everything and
it's not really accurate it's going to
look bad so I'm just going to we're just
doing kind of an impression of of things
of shapes if you can if you can just
accent the most correct shape you have
then you'll be doing good
and just kind of eliminate or maximize
your correctness and eliminate anything
that's a little sketchy this little off
that you're not quite sure is right or
not then just don't accessing out kind
of dry brushing out some of that paint
just to give it a little texture on the
table sometimes I feel like a rough
paper might damage my brush especially
these really soft ones these are the
minute Cullen skis and I recommend them
if you want to have a really absorbent
brush that does not use animal products
I also like the Princeton Neptune and I
just tried a Romanichal Zen and I like
that too and that was very affordable so
not only they much cheaper than the
animal hair they're um they're cruelty
free as well okay so now I feel like I
also want to make my strawberries a
little bit bolder so I'm going to go in
with the I think I'm going to go with
that red deep the permanent red deep
which would kind of it looks like a
cadmium red d but they don't use cadmium
in their paints that's kind of one of
their selling features whether that's
something I know a lot of artists like
cadmium pigments I mean I have nothing
against cadmium pigments I'm just
careful when I use them you know not to
let my kids use them or whatnot but
that's something to be aware of I'm
actually just dabbing like seeds and
even though seeds would not be red I'm
gonna dab my seeds in red because it's
gonna help sell the painting help make
it a little believable in fact maybe
I'll go in with a little bit of this
darker burgundy color that I made them
tap in a few CD shapes I need more of a
shadow over here so I'm going to go
ahead and add that right in there now
and I mean I'm just this is not like a
realistic painting this is very very
abstract not abstract but
impressionistic I would say and do the
same thing up here hopefully that Stutz
isn't quite dry but that's alright I'll
just tap some of them in and they could
be there won't be the focal point all
right and I feel like I need a little
bit more definition on my cup there and
I'm just going by that going with the
stuff I already have mixed on my pallet
I think I'm pulling a little bit of that
uh dark and maroon II color that I mixed
into my gray and I'm just going to try
not to rest my hand in my on my painting
because that'll end up semaj in it and I
feel like I do have to turn this I want
the this dark edge a little stronger and
I'm going to blend it out
that might have been too strong
little baby not blend that out too I
have to do something with a handle
though the handle is too um too weak uh
oops that's more than online that's
alright we'll go under the wet brush and
soften it I kind of wanna explore that
Indian red color kind of on its own I'm
going to water it down a bit at some
yellow ocher it's got a little pressure
blue still in it but I feel like I want
a warmer color without the blue I like
that help me break this apart from the
background a little bit by giving it
some some substance kind of
whenever you put something down if
you're not quite in love with it just go
in with a damp brush and drag it a
little bit a lot of times that's all you
need
I really like I really like that I think
I want to do a little bit of this over
on this bowl here can help me get the
edges back a little bit Oh totally
forgot about that little shadow I should
be putting in here they could be a
little properly because the strawberries
in there that would be reflecting it
okay I really don't know how much more I
want to do to this um we could take a
look and see how we'll pick that yellow
okras you know we could do that let's
take let's let go with a small brush and
let's look at the yellow ocher cuz you
know what I'm thinking I think that I
can um I think I can use this for seeds
because it remember how opaque it was
when we made our green and I was kinda
like oh it's too opaque but let's just
take that um let's take that usatour
advantage so I'm actually going to just
kind of turn this every time I'm just
going to put a little dab next to the
some of the darker red marks I made
I'm not putting in every seed that was
that being saying I'm just going to put
in a few and they'll really show up on
the shadow side your brain will fill in
the rest so see that can you see that I
hope that's not too bright okay we have
I'll put a photo up at the end of the
video to of it all dry so that you can
really see it this one looks a little
withered and I think that will be the
then you'll be able to see how it really
will really look sometimes the camera
can be a little tricky a little seeds in
there we could put a few and some of
these not too crazy
there we go I'm really impressed with
these paints some of the colors that
weren't what I expected when I you know
hear the names the color I'm thinking of
is not quite what theirs looks like
compared to what I'm used to but I'm
going to call this done for now I hope
