here with Sarah today hello Sarah's back
out an average of 5 to 6 weeks so when I
can get an appointment I do and I miss
last Friday to get my hair done and we
missed you we muddle through so today we
are going to do a loose watercolor
painting we've been doing a lot of our
really detailed stuff lately so I
thought it'd be fun a week before
Christmas to do something kind of fun
and free I am using the new sommelier la
petit aquarelle paint
I have the serve 24 which I think if
you're thinking about getting one of
these sets I would get the I'll get this
out of 24 they also have a set of tubes
I think it's like 12 tubes but I like
the arrange of colors here and they mix
really well I'll be doing a review on
these shortly but I really I just wanted
to paint with them a bit before I meet a
final opinion so these are available at

price of the artists line of 18 and and
you get more colors so I'm recommending
them and enjoying them so far we're
gonna be using four colors out of the
set so we're gonna we're doing a lot of
mixing here and they're not really that
money all mixed up which a lot of times
student paints end up being that way and
the these are all linked in the video
description all the supplies I'm using
Jerry's adorama.com is a great source
probably the cheapest you're going to
find it too the colors were using and
you can use whatever brand you have you
don't have to have this brand a yellow
ocher phthalo blue or you can use sailor
turquoise so you can use pression blue
any sort of green base blue that's
pretty bright and clear permanent rose
or you can use quinacridone rose and
we're using burnt umber now the thing I
do notice about these is that the the
Browns are kind of weak so if you're
using a different brand just just keep
an eye on that make sure you're not
getting too much paint because these are
those just seem a little bit weak the
pattern is available on my website I put
it in as a PDF now because I realized my
Skinner could actually just scan
something and make it into a PDF so that
should be easier for those of you guys
that are having a hard time dealing with
the JPEG and I turn my pal around so
you'll be able to see me mix colors and
I think that's pretty much all I need to
say about the materials questions either
it in all caps or the word question in
all caps so I can differentiate between
chat and questions some days we have a
lot of great chat and give sometimes it
takes me a minute to get to your
question so please be patient I try not
to interrupt Lindsey when she is talking
about a technique or a particular
product or even serving somebody else's
question we also have our moderators who
can help answer questions as well it's
wonderful oh and I also want to let you

if you're you know looking to buy
something for somebody alright so you
get the sky wet I'm going to go in with
some of the the phthalo blue I'm just
gonna mix up a nice big puddle of it on
my pallet so I have it ready to go I'm
actually gonna get all of my colors out
while I'm at it I'm gonna get my
permanent rose so any sort of cool red
would be fine for this you don't want a
warm red you want a cool one you know
red yellow ochre while we're at it and
these are student grade paints so
there's no reason you cannot paint this
with whatever you have and our burnt
umber you can use burnt sienna - I just
the burnt sienna in this set that is
really weak and the Venetian red is just
a little too red so you can see how weak
that a that brownish just doesn't want
to let go it's not would be my only
criticism of this set is a dud that our
tones are a little on the weak side okay
so I'm gonna go in with the stay low
blue up here in the corner I'm working
on 100 cent cotton arches paper so it
does absorb a little bit more than let
the paint float around I have uses this
paint on a more sized wood pulp paper
and there is a good flow and I think I'm
leaving plenty of white space in the sky
this is gonna be kind of like the storm
is coming I think the title of this
photo on paint my photo as rain is
coming and yeah and I just thought
that's kind of a winter is here so yeah
Victor Aponte question what do you look
for when looking at a new set of paints
well I am sometimes I'll go and look at
reviews if I'm concerned that a brand i
if I'm not familiar with the brand
there's some great sites to do a lot of
reviews Owens art is a good one Parker
blogs PA RK a BL OGS is another really
good review site they both have YouTube
channels so if I'm if it's like kind of
expensive and I'm thinking about it I
will definitely consult one of those
review sites first because reviews on
Amazon can be very misleading some are
paid reviews
some you know you know you don't know
what the person's experiences and what
other supplies they have available so it
just could be complete it's completely
out of context so I like to go buy
somebody that's got kind of experience
with the type of product so I'm looking
at if it's a new product a lot of times
new products will come out a lot cheaper
so I will just take a chance a lot of
times if I see a good a good deal a lot
of my supplies that's how I got them I
just took a chance when they first came
out and bought their product and usually
I was pleased sometimes I've gotten duds
but for the most part I've been very
happy with with what I've ended up with
Gracie Shak what do you think of the
prima watercolors and water brushes
though I really like their water brushes
I like the water colors to what I'm
doing is just taking a wet brush and
just kind of pulling some of that color
down a little bit so it'll have a hard
edge
umm I like them there's no they have
like fast information that you can you
can download on their website I don't
know if without knowing the pigment
information though I'm really leery of
trusting their like fast information
because I have I know I'd like to know
what pigments are in it because if they
say something is light fast but it
contains a known fugitive pigment then
then you know I just want to know that
but I'm happy with the quality of them
painting with them is wonderful
then there are certainly good value for
the money I think they're very
inexpensive if you want to lighten up
any areas of your sky you can go ahead
and blot these are fairly staining
colors that we're using today so it's
just gonna lighten it slightly we want
to stormy sky so so we're going for it
we're gonna make up some gray and these
colors are gonna be a little different
to balance to make our gray so I'm
actually gonna start by making a purple
I'm gonna go with my phthalo blue and my
crimson or it's not cribs I'm sorry
permanent Rose I just want to show you
in one watch this is this is what you
get with one wash it's a very soft soft
pink when you put a glaze on top you put
a little stronger you get that darker
color so there's a bit of a color shift
probably a little more color shift then
you're going to get with artist
watercolors especially when you're using
in this wet I just want to let you know
about that so that you don't end up with
these really washed out if you are using
a set same things available ooh that's a
tail on it so that's one glaze I was
able to place over with these beads
pretty well I'm just going to show you
here i swatched them out and then I did
a glaze over the top and they just
second glaze just so you can see like
how do you build up the colors and
that's another reason why they remind me
a lot of BS know they artists branch now
we add some the yellow ochre in there
and that's gonna grade up pretty well
it's the pretty purple so I need more
yellow yellow ochre is a bit opaque so
it will almost want to brown it a little
bit but that's alright cuz I want to get
this dirt pad off in there okay sweet
that's ready to go
so this is gonna be our first layer on
the dirt path there's actually looking
like it's just like a cracked asphalt
I'm gonna go right ahead over the sheep
legs so if you do have that sketched on
just being around the bodies going over
the legs we're just getting cleaner
water
I'm using the mimic olinsky's today they
are a focal NCD brush and the reason
these and these is because I'm using the
student gray paint and I know it's going
to be a little more aggressive when
getting the paint off the pants and it's
also absorbent enough that I'm going to
be able to get enough water to make my
washes so that's something to consider
when you're using a student gray paint
or any P then it seems like you have a
hard time getting out of the pans use a
separate brush you'll have a better look
at that well this ties into a question I
have the mimic swirl brush that and I
love them should I invest in kolinsky
brushes to any difference
well the mimic olinsky's are a little
bit stiffer I really don't see any
reason to buy my natural hair brushes
because they're really expensive and I
don't think they give you any benefits
over the your synthetic ones that are
the nicking the natural hair brushes so
I would say I would say no you could get
them get some phones cozies if you want
a firmer brush but if you have the
squirrels and you have some just regular
synthetic brushes I think you're all set
koala bear what colors would you
recommend to a beginner who wants to
paint landscapes the same colors that I
recommend to anyone beginning in
watercolor I recommend a warm and cool
version of each primary so that would be
loved mellow and cadmium yellow
alizarin crimson our permanent rose some
cool red and then like a warm red like a
CAD red CAD red or scarlet or pyrrol red
I'd recommend to blues and ultramarine
blue and a CLO blue and then I would get
burnt sienna yellow ochre and just
because I personally love it and it's a
really convenient go to have SAP green
so you know I get good levels on Maria
and I've got I need it on both sides I
don't things needed so there's no extra
sound you're saying
static okay is it just for one person
there's a not it doesn't look like
necessary everyone but a bunch I can see
if that helps okay this is just nuts up
give it up give it a few seconds if
that's still a problem that I'm gonna
switch to that microphone on my webcam
which will making me sound a lot louder
than Sarah
so yeah crapoly in hallo okay okay so
well I'm gonna fix the audio bloody I'm
just gonna block this to give me some
texture in the roads to go ahead do that
I'm gonna switch mics okay
okay we better say no sounds how about
this can you guys hear me now I feel
like the guy in the US Cellular
commercial no better no sound well there
are 30 seconds fine so just give it well
just get a couple minutes I'm gonna have
sipping my tea got a Bengal spice in
Swing milk oh okay better better much
better okay thanks guys okay memo to me
note to self that out okay alright so
I'm just gonna feel my paper here my
skies a little damp but I really love
what is going on in here it's just got
that kind of like the rains just ended
or just starting Wis penis in the clouds
and I really like that hmm so I think
I'm gonna work on this area back here
the paper is still damp so I mean you
get a bit of a fuzzy edge I don't want
my color too bright so I'm gonna grab
something a little blue and I'm gonna
mix it right into that well where I had
my my grey because I don't want a really
overstated blue and I'm gonna go fill
this area in now next to the sky it
looks quite grey you can even leave some
parts unpainted especially if you wanted
some snow on the mountains in the
distance which I'm not sure if I want
any deliberate snow just because we're
just getting started with winter and
getting a getting tired of the cold
already adding a little gent in there
Oh from the roads you couldn't use
reject up with that actually - they all
you pretty much use the same pigments
like a PB 19 Deborah Sullivan what's
best for blotting paper towel or Kleenex
does it matter that doesn't really
matter I like the texture on a paper
towel
sometimes I and I feel like it lasts
longer cuz it can dry out and you can
keep reusing it quite a bit or an old
t-shirt yeah you know I still had a
paper towel to be
a little bit more a little bit more
employment though t-shirt scrape or
wiping your brush though okay when the
sound started go alright oh you going
back looking for question yes alright
Deshpande well artificial bristle
brushes give the same effect while
painting and watercolors these are art
officials I think they do fantastic you
just want to look for something that
like mimic kolinsky this is a faux
kolinsky you want something that's gonna
or a faux squirrel something like that
so it's they've been designed to retain
the water they have like little pits all
along the strands and it makes them soft
it makes them hold and absorb the water
so as long as you as long as you find
stuff like that it's going to work quite
well for you over here I'm gonna keep
using that same darkness and I got some
Kiki here and they're interesting well
yeah the cows like to climb up here and
if I'm not careful I don't I got to
change my water a lot because the cats
will get up and then we'll try to drink
my paint water so I'm going to add some
yellow ochre and some worth a little
blue so I get a kind of deep rich green
that I will be adding to this side over
in this area to signify some forested
mountains in the background
so three not be what do you think about
brushes that hold a little bit of water
inside water brushes excuse me I got a
cup I think that they're great for
travel I don't care for using them so
much at home but but for like taking to
the beach or you know taking on a hike
you just can't beat the conveniens
they usually that the brush quality
isn't as good but it's kind of the
trade-off you have to make because they
have to have a certain type of bristle
that's going to work with those types of
brushes now I'm gonna grab some burnt
sienna and I might need to add some
yellow and some red to it but I'm gonna
try on its own see what I
see how it goes add some of that in
there too I don't really want anything
too distinct back there because I want
this to stay in the background now this
color is too weak that's what I'm
noticing you can even see how much paint
I have on my brush and it's not yielding
the color that I need so I'm gonna grab
some of the crimson and some of the
yellow ochre and that's gonna give a
little more body to my color because
those pigments are a little bit stronger
so I'm still getting that Brown look but
it's giving me a little bit more more
weight
bye bye I want a brush that's fine like
a liner but holds a lot of paint any
suggestions um I would go with the mimic
squirrel this is a this is their liner
that comes in the introductory set which
I was mistaken I thought that was like a
hundred bucks because they're really
nice brushes and I couldn't see how they
could be less they're like $29 on
Jerry's set this holds lots of water and
paint it is a number two liner if you
just want one brush you can buy it
individually it is in the set that I use
that I recommend if you can swing it so
that's why I've go with but I also find
that even they're like their rounds come
to a nice fine point and they hold tons
of water and I honestly don't use a
liner that much because I can get a nice
point with the other brushes so think
about that before you buy it um you know
think about what you really need cuz
I'll I mean I can do a whole painting
with a number eight round and not even
have to go into the liner I'm adding I
just picked up some more the phthalo
blue on my brush I'm just angering the
bottom of those trees back there just be
careful as you get around we have a
little sheep right there I don't want to
cover him up he's going off the beaten
path a bit I'm hitting the offense from
the reference photo and there's gonna
carefully paint around the edge of my
sheep over here and I'm going to
continue this line that I had to go in
that continue on over there my edit
sketched in higher than that
okay I'm gonna skip over here I need a
bit of a purpley colour so but I don't
want anything too bright I'm gonna start
off with my permanent rose and grab some
of the tail oh and I think I'll just
grab a little bit of that brown just to
tone it down a bit and I'm gonna fill in
over here our distant Mountain and kind
of feeding off there alright so my paper
taped at the corners cuz I like a rough
edge sometimes I like to see that rough
texture picking up the green banks that
I had add some trees the crest ouzel
Hill we have in the back kind of putting
a quilt together we've got these
different pieces that were fitting in on
the landscape angel oh five eight seven
six four with the wet paper does it make
the color in the sky travel and blends
yes that's exactly why we went to paper
I need a little more green nothing to
green so I'm going to mix it in a sludgy
pile here so I'm adding some yellow
ochre and some Salo I think the cats
been wiping her face like rubbing her
face against my lashes because I do
brush it I keep getting I think that's
what's happening because she likes to
jump in the water bucket are you doing
anything special to protect your
watercolor cards from the weather while
in transit um no it's but I'm an animal
of when I mailed them in my shop I have
been in any
have them in like plastic clear bags to
keep them get the nice but no I've never
really had a problem you can wax them if
you want to but I even felt the need to
me now just be careful to go around my
sheep
the boys or animals through the rims
so they also Rams aren't there there
would be called sheep sheep is like a
female okay oh man I wonder if it's a
bandwidth thing well I'll meet and I'll
get right on it and we'll see what
happens

levels look good on my end but uh let me
know what your experience is and I'm
gonna keep on painting lightening things
up as we get forward in the secound is
working
oh yes okay that's what we're going to
do there are some video to swap out
microphones periodic oh my goodness
well good thing that happened on date
you're here because otherwise I would
have been like that's just odd just on
trucking I wouldn't even know all right
back to where there we go cats talking
about cats and there was the sound I am
adding yellow ocher just picking up
yellow hook with my brush and letting it
mix it in with that green that I had
mixed I'm actually gonna go over the
little ram horn there because I may be
able to see some of that background in
there so I want to make sure that I
don't have a white spot where you don't
want it it's fun to abstract an image I
think to kind of look at something and
break it down to its most basic parts
which is what we're doing here so far
everything we've been doing has been
with this number twelve round so it's a
very versatile brush I think I think
round brushes in watercolor are the most
versatile have Robert so what can I do
to improve my brush work
Lindsay always looks like she is dancing
with her brushes uh I would say just
paint I mean it's uh you could try some
brush lettering anything that's gonna
help you get just get some practice in I
mean that's what the so it's all boils
down to I think
four colours that's all we're using look
at the range that we're getting from de
Saussure colors I think it's I think
it's awesome all right we're gonna do
some of that color over here too Lenalee
uh well yeah watching the humidity drop
along with the temperature
Kendall McCauley if you had to choose
would you go to would you go M Graham or
mission goals G um well excuse me gosh
um price wise mission gold is a steal
M Graham's been around longer there's
there's reasons to choose each M grams
uh USA company has been around longer
it's kind of your tried and true it's
happens to do my favorite but if you
look at price wise like what you have to
kind of consider I've seen mission gold
extremely inexpensively you know online
but I've also seen mission gold you know
crazy expensive if the price was the
same I would say go and gram but either
you're not going to go wrong with either
one but I would say quality wise and
Graham has has a edge I have lots of
problems with drawing from perspective
any suggestions trace hold up like if
you're drawing from from life bring like
a piece of glass or plexiglass and hold
up and draw what you see with like a dry
erase marker if you're drawing a picture
put a piece of like a page put it in a
page protector and and a sketch you know
draw over the page protector tracing is
gonna help you solve your perspective
perspective problems okay so now I want
to do some more of the road and I'm
gonna actually start spattering a bit
because I want some really loose shadows
here I'm spattering with this big brush
so I end up with a lot of like different
sized kind of shadows and I'm gonna go
in and I'm gonna paint the legs of my
sheep and I'm going to do them in a deep
purple so
I'm gonna mix the crimson fairly quickly
and a little blue and a mr. just going
into painting the legs and a little let
the the color blend out if it will if it
wants to Abby
Vander blue did you mean to paint over
the head of the Shepherd I took him out
he's not going to be in the painting
yeah there's like some bushes back there
that I haven't gotten to yet but yeah I
took the Shepherd out another advantage
to painting from a photograph you can
add or subtract yep well I've hit a
little bit thicker there so I'm just
going right into the pans and grabbing
some more color and mixing it without
adding more water to my brush james
Meredith what's the best way to learn
color mixing to achieve the shade I want
make probably making a color chart which
is where you take a you take a piece of
paper and you would you put all your
colors like so you take five colors you
do one two three four five one two three
four five you make a grid and then you
mix you kind of follow each color down
you mix it so that way you'd see what
those five colors would make in all the
different combinations and you actually
end up making each color twice so
hopefully it's kind of cements it into
your brain as to what the colors will do
okay now I want to do some more shadows
in the road man
I want to go with a brush it's gentle
hold enough water well he'll go this
number eight

what do you left that Chuy she she laid
on her own tail
oh no sure no no startled there so I got
the brown and the blue going a little
bit of that purple and I'm gonna go in
and I think I need a little more purple
in there a little more crimson I'm gonna
add some shadows under there purposely
letting those feet blend out a little
bit though here's where we're going to
be getting into loose um more wild
colors here because it's gonna really
give a lot of life to our animals I
think some of that blue in there on its
own it's very nice it ties the sky in
put a little bit of that shadow on the
edge of the road to where the grasses
would be casting a little bit of a
shadow
oh yes chewy then we need a dog in the
quarry
her nose is almost on camera oh it's
been so cold she's laughing my elven the
Thunder sound a lot I'm a spatter on a
little bit oh you know II just think
this is really a stiff brush it's a
fabric brush I'm gonna try that texture
into the road there
go-girl the impatient painter i have a
small set of yarko paints and I've
looked all over to find the names of the
colors how can I find out what colors
they are um there's a seller on Etsy
called pro art supplies they sell all
the individual pans I think they have
the big sets - you could probably
crossover and stuff there's three
different sets of 24 I know that so it
might be a little tricky I had that same
problems I couldn't figure out if I had
the original set of the sequel set I
think I turned out I had the original
set it is a little bit tricky to figure
out the the actual colors but I would
start there because are no markings on
the pans after you throw the wrappers
away but you know you can always make a
color chart and just go kind of go by
eye
all right I'm really happy
you want some bigger splatters you can
go ahead and do that with a brush like
this so the softer the bristle and a
brush the bigger the spatter you're
gonna get generally see that gives me a
much bigger spatter than when I was
using the stiff fabric brush or if I was
using a toothbrush so just kind of keep
that in mind as you're working
Angell five eight seven six four how do
you decide where to put the shadow as I
have trouble figuring out how well the
sun's behind the the animal so shadows
are going to be kind of like under them
and towards in front of them so towards
me because the sun's in back but you can
also do it where you want to pick up an
edge like if you want I really want to
make sure my sheep stand out when I
start painting them so having that
shadow underneath is gonna help that
happen and I might need to go in and add
more shadow later because I'll need to
make them stand out a little bit more
alright I think I'm also going to go in
and work on this area here - I'm going
to go I think I kind of want some like
warmer Browns and there so probably
gonna have to use my burnt sienna and
just Boop's boost it up with the yellow
ochre and the the rose because it's just
not strong enough it probably should
have chose like the Venetian red but I
don't like to add a new color at the
stage of the game and that's a nice
contrast that Red's a nice contrast to
the green I have going there just be
careful get a paint around carefully
around your your sheep so this little
row of bushes are gonna be kind of
framing your little sheep there and I'm
gonna add some greens this muddy green
there you have mixed up because I don't
want anything too bright
keeping it really loose so when you're
doing a very simple painting like this
you need to keep composition contrast
things like that in mind because you you
really need to rely on those elements
when you're not relying on detail that's
part of your composition I think I'm
going to grab a little bit of blue and
I'm going to throw that into the bottom
just so I have a nice contrast area for
those sheep to really stand out going
right into the wet paint here and I want
my credit card scraper so I can scrape
up some three inches if the back of your
paintbrush has a scraper handle like
like this one does you could do some
scraping with that I call it a grill
handle
I feel like Lord Valerie is on she's
banding people
kata I want to get another watercolor
set this Christmas I have the white
nights I was thinking about getting some
layer send layer would you say the
petite aquarelle is a is as good as the
artist grade I'm thinking that they seem
very similar i email the company they
have not yet emailed me back I don't
know if I'm gonna hear from them I don't
know if they speak English to me because
I have the set of 18 professional they
seem the same they say on on the Jerry
site that they use that these are less
pigmented but the sommelier is are not
like hit you over the head with pigment
with color like white nights are very
vivid paints
sommelier is very subtle and I find the
same quality I did this painting with
the liberty of Correll too and I I mean
I think that looks every bit as good as
their professional line but the light
fastness information on their box
they're listing stuff as they're using
the same numbers as the artists line
they're listing things as some ASTM are
some that there's not rated some are
ASTM 3 summer to summer 1 so that would
indicate that some of them are not as
lightfast but I don't know I almost
think they figure out a way to put out
their paints to market the paint's to a
different audience cheaper and and kind
of as a feeder to program to get people
in and buying their you know artist
paints like well this is how but the
student grades are I'm gonna try the
artist grade type of thing I'm not
saying that's for sure what they're
doing but I wouldn't be surprised I mean
I think it's smart but so I'm happy with
it but you have to kind of I would
research the light fastness I don't have
any pigment information other than
what's on their website listed as the
artist colors that's the only chart they
have and they do correspond with the
same numbers but I'll have a full review
on that if you if you're interested in
that a little bit more yeah I don't know
I mean without having that pigment
information I'm hesitant to say for sure
go and go and grab them so I'm going to
go in here with this yellow ochre it's
fairly watery not a politician answer no
politics good career politics means at
least a lunge
when will the review of Semele a scent
sommelier snellie take me forever I
never oh yeah I was like honuts Eleni
the area Wow
it's sommelier it took me a while to get
that one I'm hoping this weekend I was
waiting to see if I was gonna hear back
but I emailed them a week ago and I
haven't heard anything so I really don't
have high hopes that they're gonna email
me back um so I'll probably have it up
this weekend maybe even tomorrow I've
got a knitting tutorials
coming up for Sunday that is if I
finished knitting it you will it you
know you'll have tonight tomorrow
suppose we're supposed to get snow and
mess and crappy weather so I'm putting
color in the Sheep here yellow ocher
some of the permanent rose oh I'm seeing
some green even though these yellow ogre
is a bit of granulating color the other
colors are well burnt sienna is a little
granulating but I'm seeing some really
interesting stuff happening here with
the texture of the paper that I'm loving
and I'm keeping it very bright and I'm
letting the yellow be kind of like the
most dominant color because I've wanted
to pull away from the background and I
want my sheep to be kind of the most
important thing happening here so that's
why I'm doing that you do need to be
careful because if you work on two items
that are wet next to each other the
color is going to travel so I'm gonna be
skipping around a little bit unless I'm
working on animals that are far in the
distance and I kind of want them to
blend so keep that mind yellow ochre up
here step 13 do you think it is good for
me to only use three colors on my
palette to practice mixing I think
that's a fantastic idea just make sure
you get good colors that are muddy that
will that'll mix good for you the
elements
I have several Zen round brushes and a
couple synthetic flats and rounds I
would love to try the mimics but not
duplicate duplicate my brushes what the
filbert's be a good idea I rarely use my
flats um let's see I don't have any of
the mimic filbert so I don't know how
pointy they are how much you come to a

um if they came to it I would try maybe
like a well the Zen's are really soft
they're softer than the squirrels I
think I would just make sure they're
long bristled if you get a filbert
because you want it to kind of come to
that point I really like like I'm sure
this is a Zen the really big round Zen
and this is the really big round mimic
and look at they're about the same size
but look
comes to a nice point and this comes to
fluffy round kind of round moppy shape
so I would recommend honestly some of
these big rounds of the Minich squirrels
I don't have any of their any of their
filbert's are oval washes so I think I
mean that's what I would that's what I
would do just go with the size that's
different than what you normally use I
mean know what you don't then you want
what you already have rather I'm sorry

little shadow on the tree side I think

on the coat because like the colors wait

because I don't wear makeup very often
so go pretty unnatural most of the time
well it's because I'm pretty lazy and
I'm not good about I wouldn't be good
about washing it off my face every night

so but color seems too bright just keep
keep dabbing at it until it gets muted
because as it mixes it's going to get
darker it's gonna get duller

done it what you called for me they're

can add details later just try to get
kind of shadows with your purples
purples and blues and highlights with
your yellows and if you get too much on
there grab a paper towel and blot it you
do that anyway just to give it some
texture if you want maybe you can see
the shift that's dry and those are wet
so there's quite a bit of a shift there
so I'm just gonna get lighter as it
dries

palette mold my watercolors if I were to
put them in oh it shouldn't if you let
them dry before you close it up tight I
don't have there
I don't have the airtight palette I
imagine that's why you're asking because
the airtight palette they sell I mean
they're meant for watercolors so I
wouldn't think that they would but it's
all I always keep it uncovered until
they dry and then if they're wet I don't
I leave it uncovered till they dry out
okay I'm going to hit this with a heat
tool really quick so I can dry it and
keep working so if you have any
questions go ahead and ask away
Johnson artists great mission well I you
know um I actually preferred the mission
gold but I don't have a huge selection
of Windsor Newton either so um cost wise
I found them to be a lot cheaper
I bought the pure pigment set and I got
like 24 15 milliliter tubes for $86 and
the tube set size in Windsor Newton are
between 20 and $30
I mean I'm shaking it sales and get on
for less but still I mean I found them
to be very very affordable they're
definitely comparable I know there were
some lightfast issues people talked
about before they were reformulated but
all the pigments seemed tried-and-true
from what I've seen from the stuff that
I bought I think they're very
comfortable that's nice and dry I'm
going to be working with a small brush
and that dark purple color again this is
a number to mimic kolinsky that's pretty
much what of the line I'm using for this
painting because they did they're a
little bit stiffer than the mimic
squirrels I usually use I just want to
make sure I can get enough paint with a
students at not having a problem with it
and then jump right in with the sky here
and get the most defined features in
first I want to get the horns
that little shading underneath a little
tuft of fur and he's got a fairly dark
face so I'm gonna go ahead and get that
in it wouldn't doubt leave it out though
with these details because like he's
gonna ear sticking out there but I find
that that really is difficult to capture
without looking awkward like you have
too much in there and it just turns into
a mess so when in doubt leave it out
with these when you're doing a loose
painting like this you have to shape the
nose a little bit so it's looking a
little too cow like so I had to get that
V in there to get the more sheep he
knows and in quite a bit of water
grabbing some of the burnt umber sweet
kind of a perfectly gray color so your
husband is he is on oh hey you know me
are doing a great job and it spelled aw

would you just add some shadowing to

burnt sienna and ultramarine those will
make a huge shade of Browns Gray's cool
Gray's warm Gray's that'll give you a
lot of a lot of choice and you can blot
where you want your whites where you
want your big highlights but you know I
mean why not give it a try I know it's
kind of weird to use a lot of crazy
colors but it's a lot of fun and it's a
great way to kind of break into a day of
painting once you're painting you do
whatever you want I would always try
something new Deborah Sullivan I'm
comparing the photo with the painting
how on earth does Lindsay decide what to
leave in and what to leave out I'm
always compelled to put everything in
and it's always too much I think that
just comes with practice and everybody
has their own their own opinion of what
is enough and when to stop and I just
think it it comes with practice and
you'll decide what's right for you and I
was gonna do something more detailed but
then when I printed the photo out it
came out really dark and a little
pixelated so I decided that I would just
kind of reduce it to its most basic
shapes and I would kind of I kind of use
that as my inspiration I could have
reprinted it and brightened it up but I
thought well you know what that would be
really fun to just take that and
abstract it gem toe F's several years
ago my hubby gave me a complete set of
daniel smith watercolor some of the
tubes have dried out what is the best
way to retrieve and reconstitute them I
just cut the tubes away and plop the
chunks into your palate and you'll be
good to go this can make big palette
that you can put the chunks into spritz
em with some water so they stick
together and that's all I would do I
mean I prefer to work from the dry paint
anyway
I've done that before and if they're
kind of pasty it's a little bit more
difficult than you got to kind of scrape
from my what I've done that too and I
think honestly if I had to do that again
I would just let it dry completely and
then I would then I would go and read
Const then I would just let him dry out
completely and then just pop the chunks
into a palette here I'm going to lay
down quite a bit of color and because
I'm feeling like I'm getting a little
too whiny there and then going in with
water I'm gonna wet the area next to it
I finally these colors a glaze quite
well like I'm not lifting up the colour
underneath when I go in there with more
paint which is something again that's
concerning about student grade colors
but I'm not having that bad experience
at all with these so it's just kind of
its kind of reinforcing my beliefs that
these may be the professional range in
disguise not that you know don't quote
me on that because I can't say for sure
but just in my experience of using both
lines of paint it sure seems that way
they don't go with the bottom of him a
little darker but I don't want to have
him I don't want to add I don't I had
more detail so what I'm going to do is
just kind of flick on some water right
on him and I'm gonna go in with purple
that purple that I mixed some it makes a
little bit more to make sure I can
really charge and lots of color
and I am going to just add in shadow but
I'm gonna let the water take it wherever
it wants to go let my splatters grab it
and move it something funny you wanna
share with the class
I know I'm grateful Oscar is making a
lot of great puns and I just told her
that she and John can never meet because
John is also in fact when John was
getting ready for work when he was
punning punting punting punny the reason
that he he and her can never meet her if
they do I need to be out running errands
because they'll just be because John if
he is with somebody who puns it's
doesn't
but grace lives in Washington sooner but
you never know because if you get John
and his brothers and his dad all
together especially if they've all had a
beer or two
or if the puns just all my lord it just
goes on and on sometimes I just leave
the room I can't take it anymore I like
a good pun I didn't - but after five or
10 minutes of non-stop pun even like a
bad pun I am getting somewhere that
purple I'm really loving the shadow and
now that I have the the sheep colored in
I can kind of figure out exactly what I
need for more shadows here the mimic
kolinsky do not hold this like as much
water as the the mimic squirrels just
keep that in mind if you're if you're
trying to decide
all right do a little few more details
on the sheep because we only have two of
our sheep actually detailed as much as
we're gonna detail him anyway
mixing up a lot of that I'm already
getting like I'm little divots in my my
red and my phthalo blue paint but they
little blue and the other blue that
comes in here the primary blue are
almost identical so I mean that's good
if I'm use it up I can you can always
start using the other one I don't think
they're very different at all um let's

watercolor pencils but now I do now I do
not know what to use them for any
suggestions um why did it big we did a
big live stream a few months ago maybe
even half ago on cold water colored
pencils with tons of techniques so I go
check that out and then you know that
might give you some ideas I also have a
watercolor pencil playlist which has a
bunch of tutorials so that might help
you to I really like them I think
they're I think they're they're great I
do a lot of projects if you're
interested just I would just say just
play with them you're not gonna hurt
them
you know they bought and paid for have
fun with them pam h are some pigments
made from animals
how would you know I don't think there
are any more and they weren't really
made from animals like in being yellow
used to come from urine well actually i
mean bone black that comes ivory black
comes from burn bones think there's any
I think that's I think that's pretty
much it most most pigments nowadays
honestly are made in a lab there even
are earth tones organic are you know red
cones are made synthetically most of our
organic tones are made synthetically
because they figured out ways to make
them more permanent better than the
original way to derive them from plants
and minerals so unless you're buying
like the primatech from daniel Smith
which is it kind of a gimmick I think
because you know just because it comes
from a real rock doesn't make it a
better paint doesn't make it's gonna be
brighter or last longer um you're you're
pretty I think just ivory black yeah I
think you're pretty safe I would imagine
you could fight they would have to look
maybe they don't have to list materials
see I'm where you know the the looks
like pigment numbers if it's a quality
paint but with uh student quality paints
you may be up the creek a little bit but
they're generally not gonna they're
gonna go the cheapest way possible and
the most efficient way possible and
that's doing it a lab with synthetic you
know dyes and synthetic pigments so yeah
you can research it I I think black is
gonna be your only your ivory black is
gonna be the only situation you have
with a animal product ox dolls and some
paints and that comes from the gall
bladder of cows so that's something you
might want to avoid but a lot of
companies are like Lucas is using a
synthetic ox call now the ailments
I'm leaving for Jamaica just after
Christmas and I'm setting up my schminke
whisky pallets any colors you would
definitely pack for a tropical beach
vacation I would bring um
we bring phthalo blue I would bring uh
permanent rose I would bring you know
lemon yellow I would bring like your
Brice Stefan that like you can always
bail them down also yellow I would bring
my basic palette you know just like I
would for anything I think is you can
mix whatever you want we definitely want
those turquoise sea like from the
phthalo blue you want those you know
really vivid colors BKB RP 64 does
watercolor paint wash out of clothes
sometimes it does and sometimes it
doesn't
it should for the most part but you know
these are strong pigments there's no
guarantees really probably more like the
reds or something oh yes staining colors
are way less likely to wash out so like
reds purples you know the part of the
color the less likely it's going to wash
out eh does any of the paper come from
an animal such as cotton cotton comes
from our plant
so does linen but the sizing can come
from bones like gelatin size paper
there's some companies use a synthetic
size sizing and some use gelatin so you
can research that if you want to I know
Fabriano artistic Oh uses a synthetic
sizing um I will say gelatin size paper
I think performs a little bit better but
but you do it what is right for you
artistic oh is a wonderful paper I use
it a lot so that's a great one to go
with if you want to make sure you get a
non animal product size paper
I don't think they sheep have missed too
many meals era they're organic
free-range sheep so they're getting a
whole bunch of stuff natural outdoor
food and exercise and you know I would
say so I bet they taste delicious
provide warm wool for scarves and
mittens and hats that is true I'm
getting some of the burnt sienna and I'm
basically just mixing it up with my
darkest color that I have on my palate
because I need a dark dark shape for
this little tree in here I'll probably
need to add a little blue to that I need
it to be liquid enough that'll come off
my dagger but I need it to be dark
enough that it will show up so that's
why I'm using a purple mix my base and
then adding the brown to it and this is
a dagger it kind of looks like a look a
dagger so that's why they call it call
it that this might be a nice option for
the person who's asking about a brush to
try I'm not sure if the mimics have they
have a dagger but that holds a lot of
paint and look how fine my lines I can
get with that long they don't press too
hard
I'm gonna go right off the top of that
paper to I'm gonna give it some scale

well actually people are discussing
between mutton and whatever the other
one roast or something this is so blah
I'm trying to see what I can look up at
lower monitor to see what that looks
like it was too glossy for me to tell it
might throw a few little uh a little
branches kind of coming out of the
shrubs over here too
completely optional I tend to go a
little overboard so you might want to
stop a few steps before before I do oh I
kind of like this color too for maybe
doing a little bit of a shadow on the
edge of the road which I will drag out
in a second
BKB rp6 4 is taping down your paper the
key to keep the paper from going wonky I
just paint on the actual pad of paper
and I can't get it to slide now it does
help I usually read my paper and sheets
like 22 by 30 inch sheets and this is an
eighth of a sheet I find that cotton
paper does not wrinkle as much as like a
wood pulp paper so I just tack it on the
corner so I can keep that nice edge that
I like I just the rough edge but it
helps if you really want to get rid of
the wrinkles and have it like iron flat
when you're done you want to stretch it
and that's when you wet the paper and
you attach it to a board with gummed
tape which is like a tape that's it's
not sticky until you wet it and then it
gets and then you press it you button
you press it onto your paper and like so
it's half on your board half off your
board and that it dries the paper dries
well it's pulled out to its tightest
items area and as it contracts it just
kind of the fibers shrink and it just
pulls it so tight that you could like
tap on it it sounds like a drum and
that's problems if you really want a
thick paper like if I'm gonna spend a
long time on a painting I'm going to do
that generally won't do it just for you
know the average painting but if they
don't work really big or if you're gonna
work with didn't paper like I'm working
with ninety pound paper I will do that
sometimes feel like this guy needs a
little bit more definition
this is pretty much just bussing now
whatever you want to add to it you don't
have to you don't have to add any more
if you don't want to I'm feeling the
need for a little spatter here because I
feel like I need something to loosen it
up a little bit more feel a little like
I need a little more energy in here so I
think I will spatter some colors along
with a really juicy brush Bev Roberts
what is the point of having those pretty
deckled edges when matting you're
painting just covers that the edges well
the the reason that you have the deckled
edges on paper is because that's the
edge of the mold that that the paper is
made in it's a lot of times if I've like
like when I have an edge like this I
really like it I will mount this onto a
piece of that board and then I will cut
my mat so it's bigger than that than the
obtained ting so I have the color of mat
board underneath and then I have the mat
so I can keep that edge so just you can
frame it and still use a mat once and
still use a mat and and still keep that
that deckled edge show me their way to
is if you don't want to use Maddie you
can use they make spacers free oh that's
true so you can still keep the deck old
edging without mat like if some people
want they like to frame with no matting
right they still don't want the glass to
touch right so they make spacers that go
in between the frame and the glass and
then mount your photo that way there are
somebody who worked in a frame shop a
little bit a little bit I know a little
I just I know just enough to be
dangerous
did you mister your framing in house
there I know he shifted out so I didn't
actually do I didn't do a lot of the
actual like mat cutting or framing but I
helped people put it together and I
learned you know something like the
basic information so I kind of have a
little bit of an idea
there that kind of gives it that after
rainwater yeah I just wanted to kind of
have that after rain feel to it and I
feel like this batter was a good way to
achieve that goal I feel like I'm you
know I bought it I wiped away that
little shot over there and I liked it so
back under there for him all right do we
