Poppies in Watercolor Tutorial // cheap supply challenge! Video Lecture

hi there Lindsay here the frugal crafter
the other day I showed you these paints
and um I realized that I was way more
impressed with them and I thought it was
going to be so I need to do a proper
cheap art supply challenge instead of
the first impression kind of review of
my five dollar paints I did last time
and that's what I'm gonna do today I
didn't want to show you that I'm after
this little color swatch sketch dried I
did find that the colors were a little
more opaque so they do dry to a more
opaque velvety matte finish which I
think ways you could use this paint
probably not exactly the way you would
use your traditional transparent
watercolors but definitely some new tool
to have in your arsenal so I found a
lovely photo of Poppy's from Christine
si on paint my photo and I am going to
go ahead and and draw them you know how
I like my poppies um I hope everyone's
having a wonderful holiday um and I just
wanted to let you know how much I have
appreciated all your support over the
year and I hope that that whatever
you're doing this weekend that you are
having a wonderful time
um and just going to get this little
petal over here I like flowers because
because I don't have to be too precise
I'm gonna get this little Center in I
know so that what I'm drawing with a
sharpie on on watercolor paper this if
you go slow you're going to get a much
more reliable line so kind of keep that
in mind as you're sketching I'm gonna
eat that little fluff around the center
I'm going to go around here I almost
want to abstract them a little bit
because I want them to be very bold and
I just really wanna have fun with this
paint so I'm gonna make this pedal a
little bit bigger now it is a little
opaque so I'm not going to go crazy with
any detail here but I do like to throw
in some of the papery creepy foldy lines
they go with poppies I think that's kind
of something I really like about about
the texture of those flowers just these
big creepy petals my sister froze me
beautiful poppies give this guy a stem
the stem will be right under the center
and um I think maybe I'll just throw a
few buds in there maybe I maybe I won't
do too many flowers and I'll just do one
flower in a couple let's do this little
bud here not bud what they like the
seeds of them maybe they are consider
the buds I don't know what do you call
these things upon little seed pods I
guess pretty on a bookmark here I'll put
another another guy over here let's make
it nice and big I'm going to do the
opening of like kind of how all the
flower petals would be that's kind of
the top Ridge of the flower petals and
get the little Center in here I'm going
to draw my little I would call these
fuzzy wuzzy pollen things technical term
and now I will split apart my petals any
place eyes got a nice little bump that I
think that I could divide a pedal up
I'll do it like that and I even have
some under turn over turned petals
coming out from the bottom this is a
little unorthodox a way to draw but it's
a penny everyone has her own methods and
I wanted to go with more of an abstract
that when I have one of those little
pods over here kind of an odd
perspective I know you could have gone
to seed I would think they would maybe
go to seed if they are looking like this
instead of looking a little snake heads
but maybe it's just the different type
of poppies have different of different
seed pods I don't know I hope you can
hear me I feel like a mumbling I
apologize if I am you never know I just
want to take a little more time in my
drawing on this and I did on the last
one
because I was really happy with the
paint so it's like oh I feel like I just
kind of wasted this opportunity here
because this paint was actually fairly
decent actually very decent considering
that it was only $5 at Ocean State job
lot so I'm sorry did I'm going to go
back and buy some more so that I have
them for like last-minute gifts because
I mean if you pair that with like a
watercolor sketchbook I think it makes a
lovely present for anybody that's you
know a little bit creative um kids
children scrap Booker's paper crafters I
think it's just a great idea okay I'm
going to do background first I'm going
to use a pretty big brush for this I'm
just going to go in with my I'm going to
go over the pods to I'm using a
Princeton Neptune because that's the
first thing I grabbed and it's nice and
fat and juicy I'm working on the same
path of Fabriano studio I've had on my
desk since I opened my smart art box the
other day because it's handy and it kind
of falls in line with the cheap supply
challenge since Fabriano studio paper is
very affordable a couple dollars a pad
not not bad at all decent quality - I
like cheap supplies that are decent
quality I don't want to just use cheap
stuff to use cheap stuff but if you can
if you can find something that's in your
budget if it means like being able to
paint or not then yeah yeah so let's see
I'm going to go this a beautiful spring
green here I'm going to try putting
putting it in with this big brush to the
paints flow beautifully this may be a
little bit too juicy of a brush for this
but we're going to go with it so I could
see my lines really clearly now they
will be a little more hazy as it dries I
did I did realize that they it does get
a little more opaque as it dries nothing
huge but keep that line I'm going to add
some yellow to that I think I'm going to
go with I like this yellow an awful
that's pretty
you can mix these colors which I was
very happy to see that they didn't just
get chalky and muddy
maybe um I think I want to get in some
of this beautiful phthalo blue color but
I don't want it
bright blue so mixing it say that gives
you a beautiful teal let me mix those
colors together
I hope I'm talking loud enough otherwise
off to turn this into a speedpaint or
something afterwards
okay well that's drying I'm going to
switch to a small regular synthetic
brush not one that's supposed to be
thirsty I'm going to use that same
yellow I'm going to go in the middle and
paint these centers of the flowers it'll
give us a nice little pop of color in
there too
I think maybe they're okay because you
can get a thick or application of them
and of course there's the white if you
wanted to add the white to your paint to
get more more pasty so they're probably
you know they are more of a gouache go
right ahead and put some of that right
in those buds too but honestly I'm just
so happy with these I have some tube
gouache that quite frankly it doesn't
knock my socks off it wasn't expensive
or anything but it wasn't as cheap as
these and I'm happier with these um I'm
gonna bless us with a heat tool I think
and then we can just kind of see how it
how it dries and the effects that you
get
I should have taped my paper down
because it is buckling quite a bit cuz I
did put a lot of water in there
sometimes when you are when you're
painting with a student quality paint
has a lot of filler and you'll see it
like separates out and you'll see almost
like a like a granulation of white in
your paint and I haven't noticed that on
the paper I can't see a little bit of
separating out on the on the palette but
it's nothing that's concerning me I'm
being realistic about what a five-dollar
set of 24 paints will do but I'm very
thrilled with the quality of these okay
so now I don't want to work on a puddle
I think I'm going to go ahead and work
on this one first I'm going to pre wet
it going around the areas that are going
to be that pollen stuff I'm actually
just really excited to charge in some
color because I'm thrilled at how much
flow the paint has I'm going to start
with I really like this color here it's
like a magenta it's really pretty I'm
going to start that down in here isn't
that just stunning I think I need to go
buy a bunch of these would be a great
little stocking stuffer
um I just like it I think it's pretty I
think I also want to try some of that um
there was another read that was really
pretty it's a very sounds like a
quinacridone violet color I think I
might try some of that up here it's not
lovely looks so pretty next to the green
background and let's try our credit card
scraper on this because I think we can
get some really nice veining that way I
think I'll leave that lighter in the
center for my highlight Oh children get
my credit card scraper yeah oh yeah look
at that that's giving us some really
beautiful details very nice now you can
see the darker color um up next to the
the center and you can see there also
where my yellows dried it is a little
more opaque than it was so kind of keep
that in mind
pick up this color fairly thickly and
I'm going on dry paper and I'm just
going in there and filling in it's going
to go around right around there
it does want to optically mix a little
bit when I go over if I get a little
onto the yellow alright now I'm going to
skip to another petal let's go over here
let's get this guy we're just wetting it
with a clear water I'm going to go in
with my violet color first look at that
flow isn't that pretty
also we'll go in and get the parts of
flowers right next to that yellow Center
as well I didn't notice a lot of shift
and that's something that um personally
I've noticed with um with opaque colors
I don't get as much shift I don't get as
much shift with like the Turner acryl
gouache from wet to dry um which isn't a
type of an acrylic so it's always pretty
pleased I got a shift with the opaque
Prima colors from they seem to get
darker as they dried but this I'm like I
didn't notice any shift really this is
the Alwine did the other day don't think
I know it so as I could see the opacity
as a dried so that's nice because a lot
of times with student paints you do get
a lot of shift with the transparent
watercolors they could dry a lot lighter
so that's kind of that's kind of cool so
now I'm going to move over to this petal
with this one so we're going to
basically be doing the same thing for
all of these petals I should probably
just edit this part out we'll do one
more of these together then we'll skip
to the buds I'm going to start with my
red color up here because we're doing
the writer color at the top
let it flow let it flow let it flow and
do a little bit of that right underneath
that turn where I wanted a little darker
and do this color at the bottom this
beautiful violet II color but don't know
it's like it's almost like a mauve like
a permanent mob or something gosh these
are so pretty I am so happy that I
bought them and disappointed that didn't
buy more but I'm trying to like not buy
lots of stuff that I don't necessarily
need I'm gonna use this olive green
color oh that's so pretty this is more
of an opaque one I think that I will
just paint um
paint some of it then I'll go in with
this other green and paint fill in next
to it and let them kind of merge I think
those might actually dry a little bit
lighter add a little yellow and only
said that can be how we do those I think
hey we're weird we're cooking with fire
here we're only 14 minutes and look how
much we've done so what I think I'm
going to do is um basically finish up
the petals and the little buds here in
the same fashion and then I will meet
back up with you for some finishing
touches
okay so I've basically repeated the
process on all the other buds and petals
I forgot to scrape on that one I didn't
realize until after it was already dry
but I did all the other ones and now I
thought it'd be fun to do some glazing
now I don't exactly expect to be able to
do a lot of glazing because these are an
opaque color you can see in the center
there um it covered up the marker pretty
well and you give it to how opaque that
is I didn't put the second layer of
green there and you can see that that's
going to very opaque feeling to it but
but I'm going to try with some of this
beautiful crimson II color I am going to
especially on this front one because I I
didn't scrape I want to get some lines
in there so I just want to kind of put
some of that red in like that they all
switch to a smaller brush actually and
do some with some of the violet color to
mauve or viola whatever you want to call
it looks like a like a permanent mob for
quinacridone violet and you know what
you can use whatever watercolors you
have to follow along with this I was
just like really thrilled with these
cheap $5 job B that I picked up so if
you want to build color that's an option
this really reminds me of uh of an
illustrative medium such as gouache and
I just I like and I think part of the
reason I don't use gouache very much is
honestly my laziness because I am Mike
washes and tubes and I don't have as
good of luck if I put gouache in a
palette because it does want to kind of
crack sometimes so it's like well I'm
going to use I go squeeze it out gotta
find a palette squeeze it out into and
then I don't know it's just one more
probably why I don't do acrylics very
much just because I don't wanna I just
want to sit down and go wanna sit down
paint have a good time now if I want a
soft blend all I've to do is wet my
brush and just go right along that edge
I'd these are very liftable so it's very
easy to lift up a mistake like if I want
highlight on this and I want to go back
to my paper I can vary this is a fairly
soft brush
I can very easily keep lifting until I
pull that up I don't even have to bla
but if I do bla I can pull up even more
I don't have to give a scrubby brush for
that so that's kind of cool
um and going through a few more
accidents I don't want to overwork it
cuz I think I like how I loose and fresh
this looks these reconstitute really
well I think this would be a really
great set for school for schools to use
because it's just so much more color
payoff then then the Crayola and
honestly I think they're cheaper than
praying because if you get twenty four
four five I mean maybe maybe you can get
a lesson wholesale but that was what I
paid at a Ocean State job lot I think
that it's an incredible value and I
think a lot of times kids don't kids are
like watercolor because they're thinking
of these like wishy-washy colors instead
of you know how they don't know how
vivid it can be in how vibrant it can be
I think I want a little green in my
center there I'm going to stab some of
that in there really really light now if
I'm not careful I'm going to be picking
up the purple underneath and it's a
pilot II color and it's going to make
mud so I do have to be careful there I
think I'm going to use well let's color
in the center give it a little bit more
depth but you know if I didn't want to I
wouldn't have had to leave out that
white because it comes with white in the
kit I'm kind of curious to see how that
looks so let me just Pierce that open it
and put a little mcallen see it's quite
thick I'm just putting a tiny little bit
there because I want to see what kind of
effect I'll get if I if I go ahead and
just use that on its own somewhere so
I'm gonna it doesn't seem to be super
duper opaque let me use it um on here oh
yeah it's not a really strong white I
don't think
probably just to give you a little it's
really just to give you a little bit of
body in the color but I know these
little buds have kind of a haziness to
them so I'm going ahead and just putting
that on there because I do want to I
just want to play with it because that's
in the kit and I'm just having fun here
so let's just give you that little bit
of haziness that these little poppy seed
pods have just kind of dry brushing it
on there cuz I just want a little bit of
that um oh what do you call it it's kind
of like a not waxy but that kind of just
like a film like I said it's kind of wax
you know how like fruit and vegetables
some of us of that film when you pick
them off the tree it's just a very I
don't know pesticides whatever I have no
idea but it's got about kind of a little
bit of film on it
and that's kind of what I wanted to get
there and I didn't use that many colors
here
I'll try mixing some of that with my
yellowy green color that I mixed and add
that in there now that feels way too
white now that I'm looking at it
so they lift easy so it's easy to
correct your mistakes which is something
that you may want you may have the need
for I think it'd be nice for stamping
because it is a thicker more opaque
formula I think that it would you could
you could fix it it wouldn't warp your
paper as much and you could actually
lift and move it around a little bit
more than your traditional stuff I'm
just going to do a little bit of shading
in here with some of that
tailee color that I made when we were
first doing our backgrounds the package
says they're fade-resistant I don't know
about that did you say they'll stay in
your clothes so just be aware of that if
you're giving these to your kids to use
because I think giving kids paint with
such a great color payoff is an awesome
idea because they're going to be excited
to paint if they have to dig and dig and
dig to get color out of their pans
that's not as fun that's not as exciting
so I would definitely recommend these
for kids I'm just going to look real
quick and see if it says anything about
them being non-toxic
um ASTM D two three six I still don't
see so that meets the advanced two
standards of Health and Safety and
conforms to ASTM D four two three six
but I do not see expressly non-toxic on
here I don't know what would be toxic on
there but you know don't eat paint is
always a great rule of thumb I'm really
happy with these I think they're a lot
of fun and I can't believe they're only
five bucks and they perform this well
because I prefer them to the $47
Grumbach or ones that I have so there
you have it if you have these in your
local stores go ahead and grab them if
you get them on a good price I think
there are a lot of fun and they have my
seal of approval and by all means use
what you have if you already have some
paints you love use those follow along
you don't need these paints I just think
they're great value and I was excited to
