hey guys welcome back to my channel in
this video we are going to be doing
another do's and don'ts in our series
and this is going to be a colored pencil
portrait do's and dont's and we're gonna
be focusing on drawing noses in this one
so I'm going to be going through tips on
how to improve your nose drawing whether
that's shading layering or blending the
color pencils and also things to avoid
doing also just to let you guys know
I've actually just started up a new vlog

pretty much daily I'm trying to but it
will be definitely multiple times a week
and it's pretty much going to be showing
behind the scenes stuff of I'm working

let's get started so let's start with
the don'ts first and the first thing
that you should avoid doing whether
you're drawing a nose or anything else
in color pencil is making your sketch
too dark you can see here that because
my sketch lines haven't been a raised
and lightened up whenever I will add
color pencil over those areas you're
gonna see the pencil sketch showing
through which means that you're gonna
have those horrible gray lines showing
through which you don't want when you're
doing the nostrils you don't want to
make them too round and too dark at the
start build up those shadows slowly
don't go straight in with the black and
definitely don't make them circles
because they're not just circular so one
doing now is on being very harsh with
the outlines you can see that on the
side of the nose and towards the top
part of the nose of them very harsh
outlines and also one thing that I see a
lot of people doing is going in and
darkening up their lines with a black
pencil and firstly you don't want to
have any harsh outlines when you're
drawing facial features because and
noses don't really have outlines around
them it's gonna look too cartoony and if
you're going for a realistic look that's
not what you want and
so don't just use black to darken up
skin tones and add shadows to the values
it doesn't really work when you add
black you need to look for more natural
tones what I'm doing now is again I'm
adding more shadow to the nose and I am
trying to contour it and get in all of
those subtle shadows but I don't want to
be doing it with a gray pencil you want
to pick colors for your skin tones that
work really really naturally together
and you do need to spend a bit of time
when you start a color pencil drawing
picking the right skin tones and colors
looking at your reference image and
deciding what undertone the skin is is
it more of an orange undertone pink
undertone yellow undertone there's a lot
of things that you need to figure out
when you pick your colors and one thing
that you definitely don't want to do is
have your colors too saturated you can
see that I used a really vibrant red and
that's not gonna work it's gonna make
the skin look really really sore so as
well as having really harsh outlines one
thing that you don't want to do is
create really streaky pencil strokes
with your pencil it's gonna make the
nose look too textured and it's just
gonna look messy so what you do want to
do when you're drawing a nose is start
really light and build up those values
so I am doing the nostrils first which
are the darkest parts I do like to get
in those dark areas first but I'm using
a brown pencil instead of a black and
this is going to give a much more
natural looking shadow to the nostril
and another thing that I'm doing is you
can see that I've not just done it as
this circle I've done it as more of an
oval shape that gets thinner in the
middle and tapers off and it is
important to look at the subtle changes
in shape as you go around the nostril as
it goes towards the middle part of the
nose how it actually goes towards that
middle part it is important to look at
how these shadows sort of transition
between different areas it's not such a
harsh stop and start point between
different areas it's mostly subtle
transitions of shadows and that's why
you want to avoid harsh outlines because
when you have an outline that's really
harsh you're not having that little
transition which is what our face is we
are made up of a lot of subtle
transitions and shadows going into
slightly lighter values another thing
that you really need to be aware of and
study in your reference photo is the
anatomy of the nose it is so important
to look at all of the little structures
of the nose because they are there for a
reason and that is really where the
shadows and highlights come into play
having shadows give
that sort contoured looks and highlights
create like the highlight on the top
part of the nose and it gives it that
structure and the anatomy as well so the
shadows are really important to look at
and you need to look at the shape of the
actual nose the structure and the
anatomy because each nose has slight
differences there's still the basic
anatomy of every nose but there's slight
variation so you need to really study
that reference to look at the anatomy
when you're sketching out doing your
initial outline to make sure you get an
accurate initial sketch before you go in
and add the color pencil that is one of
the main things you can't start adding
color pencil until you are a hundred
percent happy that your pencil sketch
that you did is 100 percent accurate you
really need to have that perfect before
you build up all of these colors and as
you can see what I'm doing now is I'm
slowly building up more and more of the
skin tones and I'm using the bird ochre
can - pencils for this but I'm not going
in straight heavy doing lots of streaky
lines with these pencils I'm keeping my
pencil sharp which is really important
if you want to get a smooth look and I'm
slowly building up the layers of color
pencil it's just layers and layers and
it does take a bit more time color
pencil is something that is very slow to
work in but it's something that's going
to give you a much better result than
just going in with one or two pencils
and burnishing from the start you need
the skin to look like it's got a lot of
life to it and a healthy glow and to do
that you need to layer different colors
together because the skin is made up of
so many different colors it's not just
one pencil that you can pick up that has
the perfect color quite often you're
gonna have to mix colors together so the
nose can be difficult because you've got
to make it look three-dimensional
and the general rules are the sides of
the nose are going to be more shadowed
and the middle part is going to be a bit
more highlighted so the highlight is
going to be on the middle part of the
nose and those two side areas you can
see that there's a slight highlight
there as well also just above the
nostril there's a little bit of
highlight as well but the majority of
the underneath part of the nose is going
to be in shadow but obviously this
completely depends on the angle your
nose is if you're using a reference
that's got different lighting or
different nose angle then is going to
change but you need to identify where
the lighting source
going from and how this affects how it's
hitting the nose which parts are going
to be in the shadow and which parts are
going to be hit by the light so as I
build up more and more layers of colored
pencil you can see that I'm starting to
add more pressure and that's okay you
can start to burnish once you start
finalizing your laser colored pencil the
reason you don't want to burnish too
early and by burnishing I mean pressing
really hard on the pencil to flatten out
the tip of the paper is because you are
flattening out the tooth of the paper it
means that it's been hard to add
additional layers on top as you guys
have heard me say many times so you
really want to leave that last layer of
burnishing when you're happy with all of
the layers you put down and you're sure
you've got the structure of the nose
right with those initial layers then you
can build on with some heavier
applications or color pencil as you can
see I mainly added the burnt oak at ten
percent to burnish a lot of these areas
but then I go in with the burnt ocher
50% the slightly darker version just on
those shadows and you can see burnishing
these really nice creamy wax based
pencils gives you such a smooth finish I
really do recommend whitespace pencils
if you're doing anything to do with
portraits in color pencils because of
the fact that they blend so nicely with
the burnishing method they easily can
blend when you layer and layer to get
that really smooth finish whereas
something like the fabric castell
polychromos it's just a bit more
difficult to get that really smooth
result as easy as it is with the wax
based pencils so this probably took me
about two hours it does take a while and
I am still glazing additional colors
over the top one thing that you need to
remember once you've actually burnished
is that you're too for the paper won't
take many more layers after that so you
have to be really careful when you then
apply more color because of the fact
that you also don't want to ruin the
smooth result that you've got so what I
do is I glaze any colors over the top
like I said it's important that you
apply multiple colors so it doesn't just
look flat on one tone you need to give
it life and vibrancy and also look for
the tiny little details in the nose
quite often there's little textures
maybe freckles on the nose so look at
that reference photo and that person's
unique sort of features of the nose and
see if there's any texture to the skin
that you need to replicate in your study
you can see
what I do now to get that vibrant look
to it is I do add a bit of pink so like
how your cheeks would have that blushing
rosy glow to them I'm adding a rosy sort
of glow to the nose and on the reference
later that I was using there was a few
little sort of blemish bits where it's a
bit more red tinge to it so I'm also
just adding them as well and this helps
to make it look more realistic because
if you just do it ultra smooth then
sometimes that helps to lose the realism
especially if you're doing a feature of
a person that doesn't really have smooth
skin like a baby would have smooth skin
or maybe a young female but someone like
a middle-aged man with it's gonna have
more texture to their skin and so if you
do it really smooth it's just gonna look
really strange and plastic so you need
to think about the nose of the person
that you're drawing will they have more
texture will it look weird if you do it
too smooth and therefore if you've done
it very smooth at the start that means
that you need to go in and add a bit
more texture whether that's by adding
other colours like this I added that red
tone that I used in the first one I did
use this red tone in the first one but I
used it too much so you can use
saturated colors but you need to know
when's the sort of a limit to using them
you don't want to go in too hard with
these really red colours otherwise it's
just gonna look artificial but you can
glaze them over the top he's on the side
of the pencil and that is how I glaze I
just apply a bit of the colour using the
side of the pencil and it goes on really
really nicely and now I'm just adding
any little details and the attention to
detail is what makes it realistic as
well another good way of adding texture
to the skin is by using an exacto knife
you can get these a lot places online
really really cheap and it's just like a
little crafting knife which you can use
to actually lift up the colour pencil to
scratch like little details in the nose
and this really does help with the
textured look of the nose as well or
getting any sort of shiny pores that you
might need on the skin so I definitely
recommend getting one of them if you
haven't got one already and the final
thing that I do is I just use the white
pencil to pull up some of the highlights
but really I don't treat and nose much
different to any other feature I just
really study that reference image also
