Drawing Tutorial: Realistic Blonde Hair In Coloured Pencil Video Lecture | Become an Artist: Colored Pencil Portrait Drawing Tutorial - Art & Craft

hey guys in today's video I'm going to
be doing a tutorial on how I draw blonde
hair and colored pencil this is part of
a four video series that I have done
I've created four videos I've created a
video on how to draw blonde hair
brunette hair ginger hair and also black
hair so today's video will be the first
video in the series and that's how to
draw blonde hair for this tutorial I'm
using all fabric a style polychromos
pencils apart from a prismacolor white
pencil which I use to blend the other
tutorials will be coming up over the
next week or so so please subscribe to
make sure you don't miss them anyway
let's get on with this tutorial okay so
I just start by listing the clothes that
I'm going to be using today in this
tutorial for my base color for the
lightest color I'll be using a cream
polychromos pencil the second color I'm
using will be used to define some of the
darker regions again with the shadows on
the parts that aren't the stark
highlights the four different colors
will be used to create a lot of tone and
depth in their hair so it's not just one
shade or two different colors being used
it's four different colors that work
well together to create real depth so
you can get some really good shadows and
also some really good highlights without
just making it look white or very flat
this really helps to add dimension to
the drawing the first thing I do is add
the cream color as a base color over the
hair and I apply that really lightly and
then go in with the second color and
kind of define where my sketches so I
can make sure I know where those shadows
are and I just use it to add the
structure to my drawing so I know which
direction the hair is going in and where
the darker regions are I make sure that
I apply the pencil strokes following the
direction hair would be I do not use the
pencil in circular motions when I'm
drawing hair
I use flowing lines that follow the
shape of the hair to make it look like
it has movement and very natural
I then go in with the darkest color and
use this to block Ian where the darker
regions are going so the darkest parts
of drawing I want to block those in
first again I use this by following the
direction of the hair and I don't apply
much pressure at all
it all starts very light and it becomes
more realistic as we layer once I've
done that I add the cream color over the
top to kind of smooth it all out and
give it an overall tone to help blend
those colors in and make it look like a
better transition and then I go in again
with my eye then go in with the middle
two colors again to further to find the
shapes when you draw hair it's important
that you draw in terms of clumps when
you use the color pencil follow the line
of the hair but don't just draw loads of
hairs all over the place and think of
the hair in terms of clumps rather than
just lots and lots of individual strands
you'll make and then go in with the
darkest color again and further blocking
on where those darkest shadows would be
it's all about just layering those
colors on top of each other so it
becomes really natural and it doesn't
look like you're using just four
separate colors it all blends in
together and it's hard to tell where you
started one color and then we used
another one
you
I go for the second color again it helps
to create the general tone because it's
got a nice not too yellow but it creates
a really nice blonde tone so I used the
middle the second color a lot and then
I'll go over it with the lightest color
again just to make sure everything is
blended in together and it help creates
that general blond tone over the top
it's really important when you're using
these colored pencils to make sure that
the point is always sharp so keep
sharpening your pencil because when
you're drawing those lines you want them
to be fine
I then go in with the white prismacolor
pencil and use a really light hand here
I just use this to blend and the color
so it kind of smudges the colors
together so it's hard to see where the
transition starts and stops so it looks
more of a gradient effect and it really
smooths those colors in together and
gets it and gets it looking much
classier and nice but this is just the
first proper layer completed and blended
so got a lot more to go yet I then go in
with the second darkest color and use
this to define the clumps of hair
because when you blend with the right
pencil because when you blend with the
white pencil it takes out the harshness
and really smooths everything out so you
add more structure again with the darker
colors and then I add more of the tone
because it kind of washes the colors out
I add the cream back over the top
so I carry on with the darkest colors
just to keep blocking and adding depth
into those shadows and it's very much
switching between these colors now it's
all about fixing and touching up
different parts of the hair in this
drawing I'm definitely used in the
second color of the most it's a really
good transition color to gradient
between the highlights and the shadows
where I wanted the highlights if I want
to get really sharp I just left the
cream there and then later on if it's
really really light highlight I will
pull them off that I will pull some of
that color off with an eraser
now I move on to the bottom part of the
curl so again the first step is just to
add the base layer of cream and I do
that really lightly and then I go in
with the second color and define those
shapes so I can see where my shapes and
the clumps are going to go all the time
I'm following the direction of the hair
this gives the hair the motion and the
movement
I don't really add the second color
where I want the highlights I kind of
leave that whiter just with the cream on
that part also if you notice at the
bottom of the curl of done some few
little stray hairs to start with this
makes it look more natural this gives a
more natural effect because not every
hair will be in place there will be some
flyaway hairs
you
and then going with the darker colors
and use this to create the shadows
there's a lot more shadows at the bottom
of the curl then at the top of it
especially where the curl tends to
spiral
so as you can see I'm using the second
college transition between those shadows
into the highlight I just keep layering
and layering the colors at the moment
always making sure that my pencil is
really sharp
I then go in with the prismacolor white
pencil to blend out the bottom parts you
can see it really smooths out those
colors really blur them in together
and then go in with the cream color and
the second color again to replenish some
of that color that was lost when you
wash it out with the white so putting
back there's yellows and that yellow
brown tones to really make it look rich
and blond
then going with darker colors again just
refining those shadows making it look
really deep to really get the depth and
dimension into the drawing when I wanted
some nice yellow highlights what I did
was I sharpened my cream pencil to a
really sharp point and applied quite a
bit of pressure on to where I wanted
those hairs to be a bit brighter yellow

okay so now I get to the point where I'm
just adding those little extra hairs I
call saying this makes a big difference
it makes you look so much more natural
if you add a quite a few stray hairs and
then because you don't want the strands
to be too harsh if you'd like to use a
razor over a few of the strands it kind
of shows some of their hair strands more
into the distance and then when you
leave it dark in there you seem poured
more to the front so it really adds
dimension to your work and then with a
dark pencil I added some news hairs over
the top of the drawing as well over the
top of the curls and if I needed to I
use the white prismacolor just to pull
out to lighten any of those highlights
back up if I wanted it a bit lighter
