recently came to me with a question
about an online course she wanted to
create around cake decorating and she's
an amazing cake decorator make some
beautiful cakes and has for many of our
think if events here for celebrating
birthdays and Christmas parties and she
wanted to create a course to share this
with people but when she went online to
look at videos and courses and books and
all of this stuff around cake decorating
and pastry decorating she found a ton of
competition lots of free youtube videos
lots of free resources lots of books
available even some courses available
and she was a little intimidated and
thought should I be creating this in
this space where there's already a lot
of information and the answer to that is
yes competition is actually a good sign
if you went and did the same research
and you found nothing to do with cake
decorating out there in that space that
would actually be a warning signs that
maybe people aren't even interested in
this subject so it doesn't mean if
there's no competition that it's a
terrible thing but it is a bit of a
warning sign where maybe there's not
that much interest in this space but
when you see a lot of content out there
already even free videos about your
subject matter that's a really good
indication that people are very
interested in this and in fact if you go
see a YouTube video on your subject
matter and you see it has thousands or
hundreds of thousands or millions of
views that's a great indicator that
people are searching for your exact
subject matter and a great indication
that you can go and do well creating an
online course around that area so
definitely don't be intimidated by
competition don't be intimidated by
their already being a bunch of content
out there around it it actually is just
a great indication that there is demand
kind of thing you're looking at teaching
now how do you kind of deal with that
concept of having some free content out
there and how your course is going to
differentiate that comes down to the
real value of education versus free
content distributed through something
like YouTube or even blog post when
people are looking to learn a subject
matter the value you're offering them as
part of your online course is that you
have curated that content you brought it
together and you are showing them right
out of the gate where they're going to
end up so you're going to show them how
will your life be different when you
finish my course so in the case of a
cake decorating course you might show
them the cake say I'm going to show you
how to make this and I'm going to teach
you all of the different techniques so
that you can make beautiful wedding
cakes or beautiful birthday cakes for
your kids and you show them that end
game how their life is going to be
different and you promise them that
you're going to deliver all of the steps
all of the skills all the milestones
they need to arrive at that end result
and now they're actually interested in
signing up for your course they're
actually interested in paying for your
course even though they might be able to
search around and find this other stuff
on youtube or in the library or in text
book you presented them with a complete
package and it's a big part of the
reason why people go to university is
they know what that endgame is they're
going to lead to a degree or two a job
and that's been presented everything you
learn in university you could go and get
in the local library but when it's
promised to you all is one complete
curated high-quality package people are
much more likely to sign up for it and
pay for it personally I've spent hours
searching YouTube for help videos on a
variety of topics and it's frustrating
because you often end up on a video that
looks great and you're 15 minutes into
it before you really realize that you're
not going to get everything you need out
of it don't be intimidated by having
some competition out there don't worry
that there's free content out there you
just need to create the right
opportunity by showing people the value
you're going to bring them how their
life is going to be different and how
you're going to package that all up and
deliver it to them in one place to make
their life easier in learning this skill
