Succession planting is when you grow
more than one crop
in the same area of ground during different parts of the
year.
It's particularly useful if you want to maximize your harvest from a small amount of land
or if you have a long growing season.
The Garden Planner makes it easy to organise succession planting.
To do this, you simply need to tell the software which month each plant is in the soil.
For example, you can double-click this
spinach
and specify that it will be in the
ground from March to June.
The plan can then be viewed for any
particular month of the year.
If we select August for example, the
spinach disappears because it was
only marked as being in the ground until June.
Then you can pick something else to
plant in its place,
and add that by dragging out a row.
You double-click it,
specify that it
will be in the ground from July to December
and click Done.
If you then go back to
an earlier month in the year,
it disappears and is replaced by spinach.
You can do this for each plant as you
add it to the plan
and then see how your garden changes
through the months.
So the Garden Planner makes it simple to get more than one crop
from an area of your garden in the same year.
These dates you specify a plant to be in the ground
are independent of the recommended dates on the Plant List,
because you may be growing that plant in more than one place at different times of the year.
However, you can always define early- and late-season varieties with specific planting dates.
if you want the Plant List to show this too.
When you first open your plan it always starts with All Months visible,
so if you use succession planting you will want to select a month when viewing or printing your plan,
otherwise you will see overlapping plants.
