I'm Deb shoemaker and I'm an art
therapist with integrated therapy
associates and I'm going to present to
you some basic information about the
meanings of colors and symbols and art
therapy people often ask me about colors
and what they mean in art therapy and
there are some standardized I guess to
use that word the this color means that
and there are some there is an art
therapy assessment that it uses that I
use that as a guideline
my main information comes from the
person that created the image there my
main informant so I asked my client what
that color means for you culturally
colors can be different what's available
may be an indicate you know why they
chose that color although I try to have
lots of colors available that that could
be an artifact of why something was that
color I actually would caution people
against that going in with a
preconceived notion of what means what
what even what symbols mean what always
ask the person if you if you can if they
can tell you what those mean for them
because it's their to me artwork is an
extension of our or ourselves so that's
an extension of that person and I
respect that and that was some basic
information about colors and symbols in
art therapy
