hey everybody its EJ on the show floor
at sea graph at the Maxon booth i am
here with fuii god Jayce Hansen
if anyone's our crowds meaning like
cinema 4d but you do a lot of cinema 4d
stuff so why don't you introduce
yourself to the audience of the two
people that may not know you hey guys
I'm Jace ensign I do kind of like an
interesting neasha Venetian the VFX
industry for feature films which is
creating Holograms or advanced computer
displays for anything from like Iron Man
Hunger Games to Star Wars series so I
use a lot of cinema 4d After Effects and
illustrator to to get the job done I
always thought was interesting like the
Iron Man HUD was like was that the first
movie worked on where that just that
movement really exploded her yeah well
as far as three-dimensional type stuff
yeah I had done stuff on kind of trying
to edge that way on like Rise of the
Planet of the Apes with a few things and
soon more like Medical Sciences stuff in
cinema 4d but as far as yeah like that
the z-depth movement and animation and
stuff like that and now it's kind of
taken off because every film I work on
now they don't want just a
two-dimensional UI anymore everything's
got to be in depth and have some kind of
focused thing that's in 3d so how did
you ever land into the land of fooi and
GUI and like what led you down that path
i yeah as a kid I would like I would
draw kind of the you eyes in films I
would like to pause the movie and draw
them for some reason and the graphics
here but I didn't know it was actually a
job until I met mark Halloran who who
does like amazing computer you eyes for
everything from like you know like
Mission Impossible and those films the
island
and when I saw his real that's when I
was like hold on a second
that's a job like and then I was like
there's no way I could ever do something
like that so I started practicing and
doing my own little thing and I sent it
to him and he thought it wasn't terrible
so he started referring me out to a few
people and that's how it got started so
I just really wanted it and I took about
two years to really chase it down and
start getting work so that's awesome so
you've the list of movies that you
worked on would probably blow people's
mind like just just right off a few like
what are some of the ones that were some
of your most favorite experiences to
work on definitely Star Wars The Force
awakens was kind of my bucket list
project to work on and I got to work
with Navarro Parker great guy and also
Andrew Kramer in it so people wise is
great and big hero six I got to work
with Disney on their us and Holograms
and it was an animated film that was so
cool I love the film itself and the
working experience was just great
they're like little kids so and then you
know the Iron Man's and Avengers are
like just geek me out and spider-man I
just did so it was Tony Stark tech in a
spider-man suit which I never foresaw
that ever becoming a reality but I was
so excited to be able to define that
kind of language spidey language and so
yeah I haven't seen it yet it's totally
fun and they make fun of how crazy tech
technological everything is so it's
great yeah wink wink and a nudge so
definitely definitely
yep I loved watching your presentation
so I met you for the first time you and
Navarro actually for the first time
maybe like five any bees ago and I
remember your talk about breaking down
all the elements and I love that you are
so thoughtful of like every little
widget hat it's not just there just
randomly like you actually interviewed
like pilots and stuff right yeah I
always try to interview people that
really know what they're doing and try
to get their take on like hey if your
HUD was or your heads-up display and
your graphics for your jet was like much
better how would it be and so you
so every every little element has a
purpose I think that's just so cool that
you because when you see it on the
screen it's just like really cool
visuals but you're like know someone
you're taking the time to like this is
this little thing and this would
actually work in real life which begs
the question like you because VR and
augmented reality is such like a new
area do you foresee yourself ever like
working with Google or something like
that so like hey you've done this and
you've talked to pilots and you've
talked to people like industry
professionals like I could see surgeons
needing like little widgets and stuff
because their hands are in someone's
brain you know exactly actually yeah so
I've done all of those kind of things
and I'm still doing them so like that
the HUD stuff has now landed real-world
HUDs for fighter pilots and like
next-generation stuff and how could we
do that if it was going to be volumetric
and holographic like it's crazy and it's
all the way we're visualizing it is all
through VR and AR so also done work with
meta who does this really immersive AR
experience and so yeah it's on like the
all this stuff is becoming real finally
so it's exciting to like this is the
stuff I've been doing it for so long
like fake and now how do we actually
make it real it's a good challenge at
merging of the the meta to make-believe
world and like real life relates a lot
because in a film you you have like a
very short time to tell a story right
like so in a second sometimes less than
24 frames is what we get to convey a
feeling or a story and in real software
you know with all this crazy data coming
at us it's the same situation it's
useless without a story and you want to
get it really fast and it needs to be
really efficient especially in kind of
mission-critical stuff so now what you
would you say that like Iron Man talking
about like letting a certain style or
system breed like I feel like Iron Man
every new iteration every new suit like
you added on to it and like that look is
so iconic like was that a lot of fun to
like really explore in depth
oh yeah like any any kind of thing with
like a visual history to it that you get
you get to explore it and build it up
sometimes it's really challenging
because you've got a keep certain
element for keep certain flavors you
want to branch out and do crazy you know
and so that's the challenge but then you
know making it your own is also like
really fun as well so I love I love
anything that it's kind of like going
outside the box of what your normal
stuff is and definitely Ironman is like
set the bar pretty high for going
outside the box so you're and they're
going to make Marvel movies forever so
you're gonna you have job security
little bit yeah it's kind of a job
security kind of a yeah awesome well
what other stuff are you working on
anything you want to plug out there yeah
well for this type of work even though
not many people do it you know I started
making friends with other people who are
getting into it or want to get into it
and so I started up a newsletter if you

little group on discord that you can get
invited to so small really small that
it's kind of cool like the people that
are into this kind of thing like you I
mean I used your your tutorials for on
Hunger Games for the like lines the topo
lines yeah for the some of the Holograms
in there so I told my I told my wife
that and she's a big Hunger Games fans
like yeah I know that guys did that and
use my stories like what it was like
what it's like little mountains and it's
like okay it's a geeky thing it's a
geeky work you know it well it's been an
absolute pleasure thank you so much for
coming out and getting interviewed and
