MSC Nastran; Patran Tutorial - Bending Stresses; Displacements and Free

in this example I will be analyzing this
frame ultimately what I want are the
deflections or horizontal deflections at
Point C I want a Freebody diagram and I
want to know the beam stresses for
sections AC and CD the frame is loaded
here 6 feet from the bottom with 24,000
pounds point is pinned point D is House
of roller applied the units for this
example are in inches pounds and PSI so
I'll go ahead and start this example by
starting a completely new session of
patrin so click new and I'll call my new
pattern database problem 1014 hit OK
here on the right all start defining my
frame by using the curved geometry tool
I'll be creating curves using the line
by XYZ method so my first first curve
from the origin goes up 72 inches and
the should be the Y so 0 in the X 72 and
the y 0 in the Z I hit apply from this
top point I go up another 108 inches
I'll select this top point after this I
go horizontally 216 inches
zero and the y 0 and the Z and the sum
the point would be this top one point
three so you can see it it's already
resembling the a-frame in the example
next I'll define my beam cross-section
so let me jump back here under tools go
to beam library and select this W
section I'll call it a cross section the
depth of the section or the height is
sixteen point two five inches the width
of the flange is seven point eight two
inches the thickness of the web is point
three one five inches the thickness of
the flange is point five twenty five
after this hit OK or apply make sure it
says cross section created here
indicating you've created your cross
section now I can move on into
properties to define my material
so click isotropic type in map for the
name for input properties example tells
us of the Youngs modulus of Steel is
twenty-nine thousand e to the three psi
so twenty-nine thousand one two zero
zero zero III my Poisson ratio I'll just
type in point three click OK and hit
apply so I'm creating my material next
is time to assign the cross section and
the material to these curves go to 1d
properties and select beam well define
one property for this section another
property for this section first one is a
see your input properties select this
cross section before I go on here the
values for shear stiffness or nonzero so
there would be a contribution of a shear
stiffness here but the example here does
not consider that so off to make these
values zero so let me make this
properties and now I can uncheck
associate beam section let me scroll
down delete these
I'll eat I'll leave them blank from my
material I'll select the material I just
created for my bar orientation I'll
define the vector in the X direction so
1 0 0 click OK for your application
region select these two curves add them
hit OK and apply here are getting a
caution message telling me I manually
modify the value simply click yes for
all I've defined property AC next I'll
define property CD from my input
properties I use the same cross section
and remember leave shear stem to leave
shear stiffness XY blank my bar
orientation will change I'll define a
vector in the Y direction the material
I'll use the same material hit OK for
application region select this curve add
it ok and apply you'll get the same
message and simply hit yes for all it's
time to go to our load B C's tab let's
make a displacement constraint my new
set name 10a for the bottom left pen for
input data restrain translation in the 1
and the 2 direction the 1 and 2 are the
x and y directions click OK in your
application region click the point icon
here and select this bottom-left point
here a point 1 and point 1 of curve 1
selected and they're basically the same
add it ok and apply next we'll define a
roller at D so call it roller D for your
input data
there's just the reaction in the
y-direction so open comma 0 comma
clothes so the 1 is free the 2 is
restrained in the 3 is free click OK for
application region select this point 0.2
of curve 3 and if I select and drag at
point 4 in addition
these are both the same added okay and
apply next I need to make a Z constraint
this model of constraint 2 in the X and
y plane but now we have to restrain it
in the z direction so I'll make another
constraint called Z constraint for an
input data
I'll open comma comma enter 0 for the
third and close it select ok and where
my application region I'll make sure I
point selected here and I'll select all
the points I'll add it to the
application region hit OK hit apply now
this is restrained in the Z direction
fortunately all the constraints here
prevent translations about the axiom XY
and z directions so we don't have to
worry about that I mean we orient this
so it's in the XY plane I need to find
my nodal force I click this icon here
type in F for the name my force is
24,000 pounds for 24 Kip's of 24,000
pounds in the extraction blank for the
other ones hit OK and for your
application we can select this point add
it ok and apply next I can match this so
under the curse select measures curves
pick all three curves and hit apply you
get this message saying this element
property is not support bar 2 you can
ignore this message and here I've
created 18 elements if you go to the
Home tab and hit L you can view them
node numbers and one last thing I have
to do is after doing equivalence
whenever you mesh you would do an
equivalence so go to meshing and hit
equivalence and hit apply here I've
deleted duplicate nodes indicated in the
pink circles and again remember two
equivalence so here I have nodes
three 1111 notes 11 throughout 21 of
elements 1 through 18 here now you're
probably wondering and asking where the
beam cross-sections to show them go to
display load BC element props and this
only works after you've meshed scroll
down and select show on them or actually
select beam display and scroll down and
select 3d full span and hit apply here
if I click shade it I can view my
cross-sections and this only works after
you've mushed your model and to return
to back select Mundi line hit apply
maybe orient this now can analyze this
by going to an analysis tab I'll select
analyze entire model and your sub cases
I'll select default under sub case
parameters or output requests actually I
want to view not my stresses actually I
do so I want to view my displacements my
element stresses and my grip port force
balance for my Freebody diagram and do I
need anything else and I don't think I
do
let me hit apply to create and update
the sub case I'll click cancel and I'll
hit apply to analyzes so according to
the example I should receive the value
of looks like 2.8 inches in the
rightward direction so let me go back
here I'm going in for my X DB results
and hit apply once my results are
unimportant I'll go to the results tab
and I'll use a cursor tool to view my
displacements so I'll scroll down here
and pick translational displacements the
Y compare the X component and I
we want this for one node so once I
selected this let me hit apply this
window pops up asking me to select the
node so I can click the various nodes
but we're interested in this top left
one so we get a value 2.8 inches in the
x-direction and that is indeed what we
do get next we want to view the Freebody
diagram to do this you can go and click
under results Freebody first move over
to display attributes we want to be u
components dimensions the XY plane and
then once you have these settings go
back to the Select results here select
Freebody loads and hit apply so here I'm
told I have a reaction of 8,000 acting
downward here reaction of 24,000 acting
here a load here in a vertical reaction
of 8,000 I'm going to compare this to
the free body diagram that is what I do
get now the beam stresses let me clean
this up or let me reset this so tie that
free body diagram you would reset here
now to view my stresses let's go ahead
and view our fringe here if I scroll
down and say I want to view my bending
bar stresses have four options to select
from option Point C D E and F let me
close this now or I've actually select
all of them let me select Point C and
close quantity will be X and no hit
apply now what I have here are my
bending stresses and
let me do it hide my geometry actually
and right now it's sort of thin so I can
go back to I think it is display
attributes let me increase the width of
the line and apply and now you see it's
thicker so here I'm viewing the bending
stress of point C of the cross-section
and right now you may be asking yourself
where is Point C in the cross-section if
I go to utilities scroll down to display
and let me hunt for that tool the
missing ashram beam tools here I can
display point C D E and F let me turn
off auto execute let me go here and I'll
uncheck polygons I'll leave everything
else says is now hit apply I refers out
to select the beam let me select this
beam lm5 for example
unfortunately in this example it doesn't
seem to be working properly maybe I have
to play with a scale factor it seems to
be it I mean erase what I have here let
me go back here and increase the scale
factor to say 30 so here I'm told that
up point C is in the upper right and
point F is in the upper left and so on
if I do that for this element to element
12 and I hit apply I can view where my
Point C is and where my point E is now
when I go back to my results and say I
want to view the stresses for point F I
have a clear idea of where Point F would
be so here for this section is in the
top right for this section if I orient
it it would be on the top left close
this and hit apply and easier to the
stresses for point F of this member and
point F of s member and now let me show
you the beam library again if I hit
calculate display here and minimize this
here I'm told where points F C D and E
are so Point F would be at the top left
does a flange Point C would be at the
top right of the flange and point D in
here and the bottom corners so here what
I'm looking at are basically the most
extreme corners of the section let me
clean this reorient this let me erase
these point markers so back in the beam
verification tools I'll hit all and
you'll notice it's gone
