talk about which camera mode you should
use if you ever get freaked out if you
ever aren't sure if you're ever
overwhelmed switch your camera into P
mode that's program mode you can also
just switch to the green auto mode in
these modes the camera does all the
thinking for you and you know what most
of the time those settings are gonna be
exactly what any pro would use in manual
mode and it allows you to focus on the
artistic side of photography the
storytelling the mood the lighting and
all that stuff is way more important
than the camera settings anyway when I
am feeling comfortable with my settings
I'll switch it into aperture priority
mode this allows you to control the
f-stop the opening or closing of the
iris and the lens and that controls the
amount of light that goes through just
like changing the valve on a hose would
but it also controls the amount of
background blur that you get so for
portraits for example it's really nice
to be able to blow out the background
and make it nice and blurry or you might
decide you want the background a little
bit in focus or you might need to focus
on the eyes of multiple subjects like I
have here so let's take a couple of
pictures at different f-stops in
aperture priority mode so I can show you
what I'm doing in aperture priority mode
I control the aperture and the camera
does everything else so when I turn the
dial I'm controlling the f-stop and it's
making sure that the picture isn't
getting too bright or too dark look how
much the background change that's one of
the amazing things about photography is
taking control of things like background
blur it makes a huge difference in your
pictures and it's a choice you need to
make aperture priority is where I leave
my camera in just day-to-day shooting
I'd rather let the camera figure out the
other things most of the time and just
focus on that one
setting if I want to change the
brightness of the image I can use
exposure compensation to adjust it up or
down let's go somewhere else and check
out shutter priority mode

sports I use shutter priority and auto
ISO shutter priority means that with the
flick of a finger I can change the
shutter speed that I'm using in full
daylight like this I might shoot it 1 mm
of a second to make sure that the
pictures are as crisp as possible but as
the Sun starts to fall and it gets
darker and darker
I can easily flick my finger and get
that shutter speed down allowing me to
maybe sacrifice and show a little bit of
movement in the frame but add much
cleaner images by just letting the
camera collect more light over a longer
shutter speed if I'm going indoors I can
move my shutter speed up and down in
order to use the slowest shutter speed
possible in other words because I'm
always adjusting my shutter speed
shooting sports shutter priority makes
that super easy
here are my starting points for shutter
speed for little kids playing sports
I'll start at 1 250th of a second that
lets me gather as much light as possible
produces the cleanest possible images
and in full daylight I can get more
depth of field to increase my chances of
getting everybody in focus as they get
older though they move faster and thus
your camera needs to move a little
faster too I might go up to one five
hundredth of a second for middle school
and high school students and then when
I'm shooting pro events I'll be up at 1
mm or one one thousandth of a second
because those people move really really
fast
9 photography is the perfect time to use
manual mode manually taken control of
the shutter speed the aperture and the
ISO first of all cameras auto exposure
systems seem to work terribly at night
photos will often be just completely
underexposed the camera will end up
using a really high ISO or really fast
shutter speed because most cameras
they'll pick a shutter speed assuming
that you need to your hand holding the
camera and you need to cancel out camera
shake and they don't detect that it's on
a tripod and be smart about it
when you are in a tripod you should
always be using the cameras base ISO so
there's no need for auto ISO you'll dial
in manual mode and you'll choose ISO 100
or whatever your camera's base ISO is
and you're on a tripod anyway so it
doesn't matter if your shutter speed is
5 seconds or 10 second
don't worry about camera shake and then
from there you're gonna pick the
aperture probably start with the lowest
f-stop possible and increase the
aperture as you need for depth of field
it'll take multiple shots you'll look at
the exposure or you'll look at the
histogram and adjust from there but
trust me you're gonna get better results
in full manual mode than you would using
any auto exposure mode changing modes
and settings is a little bit different
