Fall Colors: How to Photograph Autumn Trees Video Lecture | Capture like a Pro: Digital Photography Tutorial - Professional Skills

hi I'm Tony North urban for chapter 9 in
my book standing digital photography I'd
like to talk about shooting fall colors
we all had the experience where we take
a picture of some beautiful fall colors
and then when we try to show the picture
to our friends it looks terrible you
suddenly see all the buildings and
powerlines and cars and roads that your
brain had tuned out for you that's an
issue of composition and it's usually
really easily fixed instead of shooting
with a wide-angle lens
grab a telephoto lens or just zoom all
the way in with the lens that you have
focus on the individual details and any
beautiful scene that you see ask
yourself what's beautiful about this
scene and make that the subject of it

another thing you can do is to work with
the light you want to work with direct
low sunlight so plan your shoots for the
morning or the evening whichever allows
the Sun to shine directly on the spot
what I like to do is kind of scope out
areas during the day during the full
daylight and then come back when the Sun
is low in the sky to grab a nice shot of
it take a look at these two pictures one
taken just a few minutes before direct
Sun set and another taken right at
sunset the one with the Sun set has
colors that just really pop in it
neither those pictures are edited that's
just the way it works my next tip is to
use a polarizing filter polarizing
filters block reflected light and they
generally make colors pop mark not a
huge fan of polarizing filters it's one
extra thing to carry and it's usually
easier to fix in post but I do break it
out for fall my last tip is to use what
colors you can find as portrait
backgrounds especially if they're out of
focus and you shoot with a telephoto
lens you can take not glorious scene
just one individual tree or just part of
a tree with some gorgeous fall colors
and use it as a background and because
you're cropping out the unpleasant parts
of the scene the viewer the picture gets
the impression that you're just
surrounded by fall colors if you liked
