How to use AGS Part 33 (Dialogs 3 - MI Style Finale) Video Lecture | Learn and Master: Adventure Game Studio (AGS) - Game Development

alright folks in this video we're gonna
finish up the Monkey Island style
dialogue where we're gonna do one last
thing with this last dialogue that I
wanted that I created here and that's
when I'm when Sammy asks how old are you
and then mr. Donatello says I'm not
telling originally in my notes I had
said that I want mr. Donatello to say
this the first two times that Sammy
asked the question and then the third
time I want mr. Donatello to say this
stop asking me that
so how do how do we do that well this is
where we're gonna get into a little bit
of global variables which we haven't
talked about yet but basically the idea
here is I want some way of knowing how
many times Sammy has asked this question
because I've asked it once or twice zero
one or two times then I want mr.
Donatello to say this but if I ask the
question more than twice then I want mr.
Donatello to say this so I have to have
to have some way of knowing how many
times have I asked the question well if
it's just what if I just want to know if
Sammy has asked a question at all that's
one thing there's a way that to do that
and the way that you would do that is
you could say you could use the the D
dialogue this case the dialogue one I
could say has option been chosen and
then I passed it which option am I
asking so I could say has option one
been chosen and this will return a true
value if the option has been chosen or a
false value if the option has not been
chosen but that doesn't really help me
because I want to know how many times
the option has been chosen not just
whether it's been chosen because I want
to make sure that he's asking the right
number of times before I actually go on
to this next one so to do that we're
gonna have to create a global variable
that global variable is going to store
that number so if I go down here to the
project tree and go double click on
global variables this brings up all the
global variables and all a global
variable is is it's just a variable that
we've seen variables before we used a
boolean variable we used an integer
variable it's just a named place to
store value
but the difference between a global
variable is a global variable is is
accessible in through any script in the
game whereas your room variables which
had created before inside the room
script those variables are only visible
in that room so only that rooms script
can use the variables you create within
a room or as these global variables you
declare them here and they're visible
anywhere throughout your game in any
script including even dialog scripts so
let's right-click on the global
variables and we'll say add new variable
this is the variable name so this will
just be called dialogue counter I'll
just call it dialogue counter because
I'm really counting a dialogue option
this is the very the variable type that
we want so we can choose any of these
variable types well in this case I want
an integer which is an int because I
want to know how many times something
has happened so it's an integer the
default value will be 0 because that by
default nothing has been chosen yet so
we click OK and that creates a dialogue
counter an integer variable initial
value 0 let's go back to our dialogue 1
now even though we set the initial
variable value to 0 I want to make sure
that's 0 because we might have gone into
this dialogue before and we don't know
exactly if we've changed the variable
before so this stuff this @s that I've
talked about earlier that I said this is
the this is what happens before anything
happens within this dialogue this this
stuff gets run well this is it would be
a good place to set that dialogue
counter variable back to 0 just to make
doubly sure that it's that it's set so
again I indent twice because I'm
actually putting regular scripting
commands in here and I say dialogue
counter equals 0 just setting it to 0
just making sure now what I can do here
is check that dialogue counter to make
sure that it's the value that I want so
here I say if let me end it if dialogue
counter is less than 3 or let's just say
less than or equal to
- so if it's less than or equal to -
meaning zero one or two then I want mr.
Donatello to say I'm not telling the
problem is is that you can't you can't
mix and match the the regular scripting
commands with the dialogue syntax here
you see how I've put the open closed
brace in here
I can't between an open and closed pair
of curly braces I can't put a regular
dialogue scripting command so I'm not
gonna be able to do this what I'm gonna
have to do is instead of saying
Donatello : I'm not telling which is
this the the dialogue syntax way of
doing this I'm gonna have to say just
the regular way we've done this before
and se see Donatello dot say I'm not
telling you again it'll do it'll do the
same thing it's just a little bit
different syntax here in addition to
saying what I want to say I want to
increase the dialogue counter because
now Sammy has asked that question at
least once so I want to make sure I can
increase that value then I'll say else
in other words the dialogue counter so
if the dialogue counter is not 0 1 or 2
then it has to be more than more than 2
so they don't want Donatello to say stop
asking me that
and again I can't use this syntax so I
have to say see Donatello say stop
asking me that just like that so now we
don't we don't have to worry about
increasing dialogue counter anymore we
could do that if we if we really wanted
to know how many times above 2 he's
asked the question but but at this point
we don't care because every other time
that Sammy asks the question from now on
it's gonna say hey mr. Donatello is
gonna say this so let's run the game and
see how that works make sure that works
fine talk to mr. Donatello tell me about
yourself
ok so this point Dalek dialogue counter
should be zero I asked the question how
old are you I'm not telling so now
dialogue counter should be one because
we just incremented it asked the
question how old are you I'm not telling
dialogue counter should be 2 now this
time ask it again he should still say
I'm not telling because the dialogue
counter was 2 now though the dialogue
is now three so this time when I ask the
question he's gonna say stop asking me
that which is what he said and every
time after this I asked a question he'll
say stop asking me that as well so it's
just a quick way to to be able to tell
you know how to access you know extra
external variables within within a
script one more thing that I wanted to
cover is in the in the example that I
showed when when I showed this sort of
back-and-forth dialogue back in the
introduction
instead of sent whenever the character
said the different thing he said
something like a like your style I gave
you a piece of eight in the example that
I showed you and then it went back to
the previous dialogue so how would you
do that because I mentioned if I want if
if after saying stop asking me that if I
wanted to at that point to go back to
the previous dialogue well I mentioned
you can't mix and match within curly
braces I can't go back here now let's
say go to previous to go to the previous
dialogue so how in the world do I do
that how would I go back well it just so
happens that there's a way there's
there's a special book there's a special
syntax for that within within the
dialogue system here you can return a
special variable and that variable would
be run dialogue see how there's three
values here you can return you can
either say go to previous which is which
basically works exactly like to go to
previous button you can do the return
which works exactly like the return
keyword and then you can say stop
dialogue which works exactly like the
stop keyword so depending on what you
want to do within the script here you
can just return that one of these three
values and it will accomplish the same
thing so if I wanted to go to the
previous dialogue I could just return
run dialogue go to previous I know
that's a little confusing because you're
using the return value the return
keyword for two different meanings here
but just take take this syntax and just
use it like I'm doing it here and just
say return space run dialogue go to
previous semicolon and that in this case
that will go to the previous dialogue
just as if I had typed it here and said
go to previous again the reason I didn't
do that is because I can't
put this dialogue syntax within these
curly braces here of a regular scripting
command so I have to indent and do the
scripting return and say return run
dialogue go to previous so let me just
run that and just to show you real quick
that that does indeed work tell me about
yourself how old are you I'm not telling
I'm not telling I'm not telling now he
says stop asking me that
and now you'll notice that it returned
to the previous dialogue here so that's
what I wanted to cover I think we've
done everything that we needed to do
that I wanted to do with this dialogue
so in the next video in the next video
we'll get into the monkey the Gabriel
Knight style dialogue system which is a
little bit more complex and hopefully
everyone will find those those videos
