MB Tutorial Part 55: Reverse Foot Rig III Video Lecture | A Complete Course: Motion Builder - Professional Skills

okay in this video we're going to start
taking some of our existing ik effectors
those were with the default rig and the
ones that we've created and start
parenting those into our inverse chain
that we've built so that we start
achieving some of the reverse foot
control exactly this won't complete our
rig per se because it's still going to
be very difficult to select the pieces
of the the inverse chain in order for
animation will be cleaning that up in
the next video using handles the control
itself will basically be done well start
going to be spending a bit of time over
in the schematic view as well that's
right so let's go ahead and get started
for starters just to make things a
little easier i'm going to go ahead and
display the ik rig because we will be
using that it also give you an idea of
where we're going as well as allow us to
test things as we put all this together
let's jump over into the schematic view
and right now we can't really see
anything i'll hit the a key to kind of
frame up on everything and when you do
this don't be shocked to find that the
pieces that you've constructed are kind
of scattered out a little bit it's
really no big deal to clean this up
first off we'll grab now if you're
wondering what I'm moving here this is
the left inverse chain and what's down
actually down here below is going to be
the right inverse chain so we grab this
I'll drag these two close to one another
and then we'll just move them both come
here you zoom in a little better so
we're just hitching a ride back up here
and what I'll do is I'll take these
objects and I'll leave them kind of off
here on the side okay so now with that
done let's go back into our perspective
view for just a minute we're going to be
doing a lot of flip-flopping back and
forth so just kind of get used to that
we're going to start off by taking our
ik effector here at the ankle and we're
going to be parenting that to the ik
ankle unser the inverse ankle null that
is right here it's in the same place as
the inverse root null just don't get
that confused we're going to parent this
guy to the inverse ankle know and not to
the inverse roots very easy to get those
swapped up so with let's go ahead and
select both of our ankle ankle effectors
and then we'll jump back in the
schematic view and really all I'm doing
with this is this is going to highlight
these for me so that I can see where
they are and I can pull them over here
to the work area
so now let's fly in here you can tell
that I'm really used to how that zooms
in and out right roller coaster and
let's go ahead and make sure these are
on the the proper side for our object
now we have inverse root and then way
down here at the bottom we have inverse
ankle to parent these in really no
problem we're going to select the ankle
effector hit p to enter parenting mode
and we will drag over into the the
inverse ankle boomin he gets parented
and he jumps a little bit off to the
side but really no problem just hit W to
switch back over to move mode now the
when you're in parenting mowed down here
in the lower part of the screen I just
want to make sure it says a press T for
move mode because I'm in the Maya menu
set it's actually moved there good all W
move tool so with that let's go ahead
and move my left effector down as well
I'll select him hit p and then I'll drag
over like so so we get the exact same
kind of connection on the other side and
we'll move him back into place now just
with that done with nothing else done
let's go back over into our producer
perspective and let's have a look and
see what we've accomplished right now I
can select the ball ik I'm Pollock I'm
thinking another program right it's
likely the inverse bowl a null that I've
created and I can rotate this and we're
already rotating up onto the ball of the
foot if I want I can also let's just
check this out i can rotate from the toe
as well nice so things are coming along
just fine at this moment the only
problems we have are if we try to rotate
right now from the heel mmm that looks
really scary hmm so we're going to need
to find a way to make the toe effectors
that we've created follow along with the
the inverse toes so again let's go back
to the schematic view what I'll do is
just to make sure that everything is
coming along nicely i will select my toe
ik effectors that i created at the same
time we'll select my hints now this is
just a workflow that I use when I'm in a
schematic view so that I can readily see
objects they'll become selected for me
and I can get their positions so there's
my guys they're floating up here in this
area so we'll pull them down here to
where we're working and fly back in here
now I have left and right of course let
me go ahead and start organizing this we
have the left ik effector this is going
to of course go over to our toe we have
the right ik effector we have the right
ik hint and the left ik hint let's go
ahead and get these parents at end so
here's left ik effector of course going
to left inverse toe so i'll hit p drag
straight over like so he flies out of
the way which in this case is fine
because it's just going to get them out
of our way so he's not clouding our
thoughts if you will now left ik hint
what are we going to do with that we're
going to plug that into the left ankle
effector it really doesn't matter what
we plug this into the left ankle
effectors a really good location though
because it's a is not going to get in
the way of any of the ik solving and it
will still allow the hint to be brought
along with the foot while we're
animating so we don't have to think
about it anymore we can just hide it
when we're finished so I'll take the
left ik hint hit p drag it over here to
the the right ankle effector we're done
come over here to the opposite side and
we have the the right inverse toe as
well so we'll select parent dragging the
ik effector over to the toe again we're
parenting that toe ik effector we
created over to the inverse toe no then
down to the right Ike a hint which again
we're going to tie into the right ankle
effector so we'll hit p drag that in and
just because I'm a stickler for this
kind of thing let's let me clean up my
tree hierarchy just a little bit so pull
these guys back over here where they
belong just in this way I can easily
come in and I can see what this looks
like they can see who's connected to
what without having to jump off to the
side later on so with that let's test
things out let's jump back over into our
producer perspective view and for now
I'm gonna hide a few things so let's go
ahead and switch now le some stuff on
change my mind so let's go ahead and
grab the the ball oh the inverse ball
and right
now we have this taking place so right
now you'll notice my toe isn't following
along it's not a problem what I'm going
to do is just step down into my
constraints and i'm just going to
deactivate and reactivate this this
comes from reopening the file sometimes
so don't worry about it let's click OK
don't worry about the warning just click
OK and while I'm at it let's go and do
this with the other one as well so now
if we double check this when we rotate
from the ball you'll notice there things
working just fine so that that's really
a non-event let's go ahead and select
again so you can see this is working
just fine we grab our toe we can rotate
from that just fine nice we can select
back here to our heel we can rotate this
up just fine we can grab our foot are
our actual root for the inverse chains
very difficult to select right now so
for the time being I will grab it from
the schematic view so it's located here
on the side so it's at the top of my
change for me to zoom in so you can see
the name there it is left inverse root
and then we'll go back to producer
perspective and now because our standard
ik effector is parented in I can move
this up the whole foot comes along I can
rotate this from any given location not
a problem we can waggle the foot really
we have all the control we need to go
ahead and begin animating in the reverse
foot style method but it's just
difficult to select these please a
nightmare to select so we need to fix
this kind of streamline our workflow
which wonderfully for us is very easily
done with the advent of handles which
will be covering in the next video so
that's going to wrap up for this video
