How to Play Minor 9 Chords on Guitar Video Lecture | Guitar: Become a Pro (English) - Music

some questions just don't have answers
like why do I always burn myself
whenever I eat pizza rolls other
questions like what's my 9 chord how do
I play it and when do I play it can be
easily answered and I'm going to do that
right now
so let's get right to a minor 9 chord is
a minor chord with a flat 7 and a 9 so
the chord spelling would be 1 flat 3 5
flat 7 and 9 now the way you would apply
that is you would take all the notes in
a certain key like if we were doing like
a D minor 9 we take the notes of D major
we take the first note we take the
flattened version of the third note the
fifth note the flattened version of the
7th note and the 9th note and combine
them into one five note chord now the
way I like looking at course is looking
at them in a group as part of the key so
we're actually going to take the notes
in the key of C c d e f g a b and find
the minor 9 chords within them so we're
going to start on that second note which
is a d now what we're going to do is
instead of thinking of C as 1 we're just
going to shift everything over one note
to keep the same notes but we're gonna
think of D as a first one we're gonna
take the first the third the fifth the
seventh and then the ninth we're going
to come all the way back around again
and add that second note really and
we're going to put it on top so adding
all of these together will give you a
minor 9 chord so here are three voicings
that we can use the most common one that
I usually see is the one rooted on the a
string and the D on the a string is the
5th fret so your middle fingers gonna go
there you're gonna play the minor third
path being the 3rd fret on the D string
with your pointer finger your ring
finger is gonna play the fifth fret on
the g string and your pinky is gonna go
right behind it the fifth fret on the B
string
so you may have noticed that these are
only four notes and we said this is a
five note chord what we're doing is were
implying the fifth so we're still
getting the sound of a minor nine chord
now the next one we're going to do is
root it on the a string and we're going
to do two kind of different voicings on
the same root note so if we take an A
right aving the sixth note in the key of
C you can always use a minor nine chord
on the second and six degree or note of
that so any a minor you can turn into an
a minor nine chord and the key of C now
you probably already know this Barre
chord voicing again just like this of a
minor now we can actually just kind of
manipulate this by taking our pinkie and
stretching it this is a pretty big
stretch to go to more frets so if we
were to count to nine and play like the
minor scale one two three four five six
seven eight nine that's gonna give us
that note now I realize that could be
kind of a tough chord to play because
it's a stretch and you have to keep that
bar kind of intact so what we're gonna
do is do another voicing there might be
a little bit easier you're going to
swing your pinkie down to the bottom
string and play the seventh fret right
so here's a a minor if you lift your
pinkie up if you watch the a minor seven
video this is an a minor 7 and then if
you put down here you get the 9 down
there right so a minor a minor 9 another
voicing for every chord that you know is
good to know the accompanying arpeggio
that goes along with it so for example
for this a minor 9 chord we're gonna
learn the arpeggio and again arpeggio is
just knowing a chord played one note at
a time through kind of like a scale in
most right so this is our first note our
minor third would be right here
hey do a see it our fifth as the e so
I've got five e8e 7 e 5 D now if we go
to 7 D right here that's gonna be the
octave right so it's 1 3 5 7 8 9 is
going to be two frets past that right so
we can kind of just skip the 8 if we
want and just do a 1 3 5 7 9 or what I
think sounds pretty
is if you go one three five seven and
then kind of get the eight and then go
up to the nine all right so now the
beauty of this is remember we said the
second degree of C which is D we can do
the same arpeggio on the a string so we
can do it here and then do it up a
string here so the nice way how they how
they work inside of a single key is if
you have one core to be the second Corps
doesn't matter what kirin say we're in
the key of what I say say we're the key
of D where our second note isn't he
right the E minor nine is going to exist
one string down from the sixth chord
which is going to be a B right now you
can actually play these kind of set them
on top of the actual strum chord so
we're gonna do now is take that d-minor
9 and then we're gonna follow it up with
the arpeggio of its away to the a back
to the dear to the air now you can also
replace existing chords in a progression
with nine chords so long as it's the two
or the six so AB arresting the key seals
do like a a one two six four progression
which would be a C to a d minor to a a
minor to a nap
alright so one
six-four so let's replace the 2 and the
6 with those chords so instead of
so to recap a minor nine chord is just a
1 a flat 3 5 a flat seven and a nine or
if you are really comfortable with minor
7 chords you're just adding a 9 to a
minor 7 chord you can use them on the
2nd and 6th note in a scale to stay in
the scale but that doesn't mean that you
can't use them somewhere else for
example the the 3rd right so like Anna
key of C E minor is also a minor triad
chord we could play an E minor 9 but
we're actually introducing an F sharp
into that which F sharp isn't in the key
of C F is but it's not the end of the
world if you play enough sharp in the
key of C right so if you have like a C
in to achieve
it's like how bad did that sound that's
really where you can get creative just
by using your knowledge of different
chord voicings knowing where things go
and then once you kind of have a good
grasp on what can go where you can
really focus on maybe taking things from
other keys and placing them in existing
chord progressions and make them sound
really interesting
