How to Practice Arpeggios on Guitar Video Lecture - Guitar Become a Pro

it's going on everybody we're back with
more arpeggios with friends I'm Sean
Daniel I am Justin Mitchell and you know
what we're gonna do today we're going to
do some Jazzercise hello let it be known
but we're not gonna do your granddaddy's
Jazzercise no we're gonna do the new
wave of Jazzercise and these are going
to be arpeggio exercises that's right
that you can use in a jazz contacts
because you know sometimes with these
patterns especially with the new ones
it's hard to get them under your fingers
and you're you know maybe struggling
with your dexterity or your you know
background so it's good to have that
exercise yeah you want to be as musical
as possible but sometimes you just need
to drill things that's right
right five minutes a day it's all it
takes that's right I'm a quick side note
though so jazzers what is Jazzercise
I've never actually known I've heard the
term
I've heard it mocked I've mocked myself
it has been the button you don't know
what Jazzercise is so I'm pretty sure
it's just like um aerobics to jazz
really swing jazz like yeah yeah has to
be swing jazz well I don't know and for
some reason I think it's I imagine it
always being in water I feel like it has
to be bad jazz that oh yeah well like
yeah I can't probably extras like
exercising too Kenny G is that yes is
that possible I don't know
I don't thought this is it like it's
like CrossFit with Dave Brubeck yeah
that's that's it that's what that is it
that's actually that's intense
it's how I see it yeah anyways we're
gonna learn some some new wave of Janis
I so Justin please take us let's show us
so the most useful exercise you can do
okay so these are my favorite exercises
I use these to warm up all the time and
it's all going to be based around a
major scale shape that you might not
know so we're going to go over it real
quickly I'm gonna start on the third
fret here so we're going to do a G Major
scale G and a the strings are going to
be the same it's going to be right here
on the third right here on the fifth
right here on the seventh same for the a
string
and then we get to the d-string it's
going to be a fourth the fifth the
seventh the G is going to be the fourth
the fifth and the seventh
and then the B string is going to be the
fifth the seventh and the eighth and
there we have our full octave so it's
right so there's the major scale so what
we're going to do is we are going to
harmonize this major scale and we're
going to make our ped geo shapes first
with triads then we're gonna add the
seventh Shawn already has a lesson up
about harmonizing the major scale check
that out if you have no idea we could
just status right after water at first
that's right isn't like this a little
bit easier for you try just being a
three note chord right and then a
seventh being four note before no chord
the seventh one away from it to make it
really simple we're just going to play
that shape you like
you know pause the video get that shape
on your hands we're going to play bad
shape and we're going to skip every
other note it's that easy
so what we're what makes it tricky is
that we're going to ascend and then
descend so we're going to play an
arpeggio this direction and we're gonna
play it backwards this direction it can
be a little tricky so it's going to go
like this
first it's G right so on the on the low
E it's three seven and then five a which
would be a G of B a D which makes a very
major arpeggio that's right and then
we're actually going to put our pinkie
or you can slide if you really have to
but I encourage you to use your pinkie
to power to the pinkie on the seventh
fret of the a string and we're going to
come back third fret on the a string
fifth fret on the low E so so far we
have
right and then so once we come back
we're going to put our pinkie on the
seventh fret of the E string and then
it's going to be the fifth fret of the a
string right then the fourth fret of the
D string so we have B right so I have a
B minor right arpeggio and then we're
going to put our index finger here on
the the fifth fret of the D string and
then we're going to go to the seventh
fret of the a string we're going to
bring you here on the C which makes a C
major triad right so we have G a and
right B and then C so now we're going to
go to D right here on the fifth fret of
the a string and then we're going to go
to the fourth fret of the D string to
the 7th fret of the D string
that's our D so we have
right and then so on the g string you
have 4/5 on the d seventh on the a
that's our E minor arpeggio so we have
and then the last one is the B fourth
fret seventh fret both of those the D
string right here on the g string with
fifth fret and then finally we're going
to go back to our G finally again which
is the seventh fret of the g string
fourth fret of g string fifth fret of
the D string so real slowly and we go
through the whole pattern
really I mean that that's it for now I
mean that's really an invaluable
exercise and and because it's like
individually none of that is difficult
to play it's like a mentally difficult
thing that's right right it's a
challenge mentally if you've never tried
that far that's right that's tough and
I'm like I would get lost so easily
right at first but I think the things
that are more mentally challenging than
physically challenging to me is where
you learn the most and get the most
awareness yeah absolutely
so I think that's why this is like an
invaluable exercise it is about if it is
incredibly challenging for you to ascend
and descend just remember that all we're
doing like review the the harmonizing
the major scale video and just just
maybe you could just ascend right so it
would be just right and then we'd go to
a then go to be you know and just move
that direction yeah all right instead of
making it circular
right exactly yeah but you know nobody
said Jazzercise is gonna be easy nobody
you know that's not why you subscribe to
this yes right all right yeah jazz bands
this is a new wave that's right there
