everybody knows that all the really cool
stuff comes in groups of 11 like like
seasons of Frasier or seventh heaven for
example but did you know that minor
chords and arpeggios can also come with
an eleventh component or you're about to
know after you talk about one of the
more underrated guitar chords the minor
eleventh chord and its accompanying
arpeggio so minor eleven chord right
this is like one of those chords that
like separate the men from the boys you
know like if you're playing a minor 11
chord and you let people know about it
you're bound to impress all those around
you so what is it it's a triad a minor
chord right we're going to do it in a
minor we have an a minor chord we're
going to add a flat seven a nine and an
11 right so this is a six note chord
which means we're going to start out by
doing in our page you'll just play it
one note at a time we're going to take
it from a minor scale right so if we
number these out it's going to be one
two three four five six seven eight nine
ten eleven
all right so if we take the one the flat
third the fifth the flat seven the ninth
and the 11 those are pegs our arpeggio
now the way I like to look at this is
two triads stack on top of each other
kind of helps me think of it in the
better way so if we have an a minor form
plus a G major chord we kind of have
those combined to make an a minor 11
arpeggio now this one right here is
really cool but I kind of like sliding
into it so the way that I can visualize
this I see I see it as to try out our
pleasures I have an a minor right I want
a flat green and I'm I'm going to slide
a minor third up from here this e which
will bring me to a G the tenth fret on
the a string and then from here
I'm going to make a G major arpeggio G a
B D prime which means that those two
shapes the minor arpeggio space and
major arpeggio shape kind of come in
really handy kind of back to back right
so I've got five e 8 e 7 a pen a the g9
the 12 D so I have an egg a C and a G a
B and E so I think this is a superior
way to think about a big group of like
okay what's in a minor 11 an a-c e-mf of
a la i think of it as an a minor plus a
G major I don't know that a minor is AC
e
a G a G major the G B D if you don't
know that stuff off the top of your head
just keep doing be thoughtful about it
it's going to come to you eventually
and then eventually can kind of do stuff
like a bee bee bee bee alright I think
you kind of like just move around stuff
like that too right so I think the value
in learning news first is learning them
has our pedos you can kind of move
around and again this is totally movable
so this is just a minor 11 arpeggio a B
minor 11 arpeggio would be the same
thing that's the beauty of these movable
shapes right but we want to use uses
chords too right and using a six no
chord on the guitar is a real challenge
because there's only six strings you can
only really play six notes at once so
we're going to imply a couple of these
notes and Maya
I guess my voicing of choice minor 11
wise is this one right here so we're
still doing it in a it's a root note
with your middle finger you're going to
grab the a the fifth fret of the low E
string we're going to skip the a string
for the purpose of this chord you can
just leave the a string open because it
is in the chord but we want to make this
a movable shape so we can make this a
mine or 11 and a sharp minor 11 be mine
11 g minor 11 so on so forth correct so
we're going to skip a string same fret
ring finger so 5 D pinkies on five G
pointer finger on this D if right here
the third fret of the B string
a minor 11 B minor 11 back in D minor 11
we're going to earn one more voicing and
then we're going to kind of use these in
context to kind of make it more
practical right so in a string voicing
of a minor 11 chord we're going to use
looks like this so there's going to be a
D minor 11 our root out is going to be
the fifth fret on the a string and now
I'm going to bar like the bottom four
strings on the third fret a little bit
difficult you might want to maybe try it
farther down the neck this is really
hard for you but basically I'm going to
do is I'm going to get five a 3 D 5 g 3
B and 3 here so now again I don't have
all the notes to make a true minor 11
kind of like what we do a theorem Reggio
but I'm still getting kind of like the
sound of that 11 that my neural ebony
sound if you want to think of that way
right so again this is a D minor 11
arpeggio we're not afraid for you and
this is an a minor 11 chord now where do
we use these right now
minor 11 chords are going to sound best
on the 2 and the 6 now when I say the 2
and the 6 if you haven't watched me
other videos those means are the scale
degree of a scale right so if we're in
the key of C the second and 6 notes are
going to be root notes for this chord so
the key of C the 2 is a D and the 6 is
an a so these two voicings really come
in handy in any progression and the key
of C that you can substitute switch in
and out whatever you want to be right so
we're going to take a progression in the
key of C it's going to be D minor and
this is just going to be without minor
11 chords first its regular D minor do a
G major to an a minor to C
so the numbers would be adhered to a 5
to a 6 to a 1 right these are just open
chords right now now if I want to swap
out two minor chords right instead of
starting on this team I'll start here
so it makes a little bit more
interesting kind of adding you know some
of what I think are like really pretty
intervals and anytime you can kind of
use notes in that arpeggio to kind of
like kind of throw something in so
instead of going like a minor to C you'd
be like it's kind of like maybe n stuff
I think that's kind of cool even if
you're just playing solo chords by
yourself - kind of like end a song even
even if you haven't used a minor 11
chord any time in the context of this
progression right you just have like a
few minor - a G it kind of just makes a
you know makes a little more interesting
before you do it so always think about
these voicings and I think they're
really it they're welcome voicings that
don't sound too weird right a lot of
times if you get into like the the
higher level theory jazz your chords
some of them can sound really kind of
off-putting or not not even off-putting
but just like sound really different in
the context of just open chords with
something that you I think that these
minor Levin voicings specifically have
enough kind of glue to make them sound
welcome while kind of inviting more
resolution to maybe other chords that
you might want to use as you already
know right so definitely start
appreciating these minor 11 chords it's
always throw them in on the 2 & 6 hi-c
control I'm really wherever you want you
can throw them in on the 3 like like the
3rd minor chord in a key is the 3 right
so that would be like an E we could use
this like a G minor 11 now this is again
a Texan we have an f-sharp in it which
isn't in the key of C but it's something
cool you can do too right so like if you
have like a D minor
and maybe it doesn't sound so bad
because it's close enough it's in the
key of G kind of group of cords and
stuff like that too but almost to think
of it as a way to substitute for regular
minor chords and just start kind of
incorporating the cord and the arpeggios
and you're playing and I think you'll
really be happy with what it kind of
brings out
