How to Make Your Practice More Musical Video Lecture - Guitar Become a

when I think of musical exercise I
usually think of the guy in my gym who
still has not realized we can hear the
Cyndi Lauper blaring through his
headphones but after that I like to
think of ways to try to combine like
arpeggios and chords into a more musical
practice atmosphere that isn't quite as
stale and boring so the exercise we're
gonna use for today is gonna sound like
this

all right so this is basically just one
octave of the major scale and the minor
scale and a couple chord voicings
alright so we're gonna start always in
the key of G so we're gonna start the G
major chord justifier chord rooted on
the third fret of the E string and what
we're gonna do is we're gonna play this
in a little bit of a groove waste we're
gonna go up what I'm doing is I'm
hitting the root the e string and the a
string the fifth of the board and the
court so E and now I'm gonna run into an
and arpeggio alright and this is really
we've done this one before in a couple
the other videos but all we're gonna do
is we're gonna start on the root note
we're gonna hit the second note of the
major scale so g a b c d e f g that's
the shape that you can really start to
know by now we're gonna get the g and
we're gonna slide to the b instead of
going it across strings of e so we're
gonna slide into the be a major 3rd to
the 5th the d so g a b d straight down
and then start the shape again G a B D G
a and they're gonna go up a string so
again your finger doesn't really have to
ever leave the fretboard that last e
here the seventh fret of the a string is
we're gonna end is it gonna be the start
of our next chord so we're gonna get a G
major chord into this e right so now
we're gonna land here and play a
different board an E minor chord right
so you probably know this voicing I read
about the seventh fret of the a-string
nine d9g little finger on B string then
you kind of just bar or just get the
first or whatever you want to do and
here we're gonna take our second shape
the minor scale shape on the shape you
should really have under your belt if
you only know two shapes of a major
scale and the minor scale because you
can apply them to a lot of different
ways so we've got the G chord into the
same kind of pattern we're gonna get the
root v there so we gotta have a symmetry
between these two chords right and the
scores are important because E is the
relative minor of G and that means we
can use anything in the minor scale
which we're gonna use to connect back to
the G alright so we've got this a so all
I'm doing is I'm going up hammering into
the fifth note of the E minor scale one
two three four five so I'm going from
four to five
and as far as fresco at 79
back there dis is the minor scale I'm
just playing backwards the first five
notes five four three two one I'm gonna
go back to this D note here which I'm
thinking of is kind of like the
connection between this form and this
Florida I'm kind of pivoting on this
note so you got this gia backwards
through the minor scale deg and I think
that's a little bit more of a musical
way to practice scales and arpeggios and
we're gonna do another one with a
different voicing and we're gonna start
now here on this a minor this is gonna
be our first chord for the second part
of this exercise and we're gonna go to a
higher voicing and over G major chord so
basically major in the studio same chord
different voicings now we're rooting on
the 10th fret the G of the a string and
I'm eating the 12th fret of the D G of e
strings right now we're gonna do is
we're gonna do a similar kind of our
pesho' thing
we're gonna kind of do more of a little
bit of a bluesy thing so there's a lot
of different ways you can play this but
I like kind of getting into this chord
voicing
now we're gonna slide into guru now grab
the minor third push the minor third
again most time is down to string back
to frats a minor third of e-beam G we do
on this same string but I want to slide
back to get the root the minor third the
fourth and the fifth and then the
seventh the minor seven one two three
four five six seven okay so it's really
symmetrical shape you end up on the five
Agana so one three four five seven five
and then premier let's just jump right
into that next chord voicing again so
again we've got the E minor

now again the first scale that we used
was the major scale up here we're gonna
repeat that exact same thing but I may
say a string G there just be an octave
higher than here all right so all I'm
gonna do is once I get into this board
voicing I'm gonna walk it backwards
through here so if we think of like the
numbers of the major scale we can think
eight seven six five four three
all right I'm just go backwards through
this shape now if you notice I'm playing
the shaker with my thank you but if I'm
coming at it from the chord voicing I'm
just using my ring finger

and then back to the loggia all right so
we've got the loggia quarter ba arpeggio
in 2a d minor backwards through the
minor scale back to the G chord

you miner so just a couple different
ways that we can maybe more musically
incorporate practicing your scales and
your arpeggios and your chord voicings
into one exercise that sounds a little
bit more to me it sounds more
interesting than just kind of just like
shredding and stuff like that's you so
basically you can use these arpeggios
and scales over any different chords you
want but I just wanted to pick root note
and it's relative minor to kind of using
this example so really kind of move
these patterns all over the fret board
