How to Strum Guitar Like a Boss Waltz Style Video Lecture - The Ultimate

everybody knows that the coolest things
in life come in threes like company
Musketeers and doors down so we're going
to talk about three is specifically
three for timing which is also a waltz
time signature and we're going to learn
guess what three different strumming
patterns to help you get your waltz on
okay
so what is waltz basically it's it's
something 3/4 time what does that mean
it just means instead of counting to
four like usually would 1 2 3 go 1 2 3 4
counting 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2
it kind of gives us like swaying back
and forth that feel so we're going to do
3 different patterns they might sound
familiar
we're going to kind of base all of them
just start off with on an a minor chord
and the first one we're going to do all
of them are going to be a little bit
dynamic and instead of counting like
down down down up down down down up
we're going to use numbers so 1 2 3 over
the down beats 1 2 3
the means are going to be down strokes
when I've saved the word and in between
those that's going to be an upstroke an
offbeat 1 2 and 3 and okay so all the
numbers down 1 2 3
the word n is always up one-and two-and
three-and alright now the first one
we're going to do is it going to sound
like this 1 2 gone
really kind of like the simplest one you
can do what we're doing is we're going
to strike the root note of the chord and
just the root note on the one and then
the rest of the chord is going to be on
the 2 and the 3 so all downstrokes and
the root note of a minor is the open a
string okay so if you take your thumb
whatever doesn't matter it's going to be
really good target practice for hitting
just a root note inside of a course so
again the 1 is going to be a open a
string
and then the two and three are going to
be the rest of the cord so from the D
string all the way through one two three
one two one two three one so okay if
you've never tried to play in three four
timing before this is like a good intro
to just like the bare bones and the wood
off it to a c4 to a G course
all downstrokes play it as slow as you
need to
you speed it up you're watching pricing
with a metronome is a fantastic idea if
you want to take one step further from
this maybe alternate bass notes so the
first bar will be 1 2 3 1 so I'm going
to go right below to the open E string 1
2 1 now this will always work because if
we think about what we're doing written
8 a note and it's forward and they're
writing an email and it's chord we're
playing an a minor in the key of a minor
we've got ABCDE so it's a root note and
then it's fist
anytime you root a chord voicing on the
a string its fist is always going to be
the same fret that you're holding down
on the E string so let's say we're doing
like maybe difficult like a C major 7
like this where I've got the 3rd fret on
the a string the fifth fret on the D
string the 4th fret on the D string and
my pinky on the fifth try the B string 1
2 3
Piru noted on 3a I can just move it up
to 3 feet
gee I don't even have to know the notes
I just know they're going down on the
string
they've prepped it gives me the fifth or
whatever board and that'll kind of give
me a nice back and forth
alternating type sound okay so that's a
really really simple one a little bit
dynamic because the first root note is
always going to have a little less
volume and the whole board is going to
be so it's kind of you know might seem
that a little bit different than just
you oh my god just doing dances I can be
counting the free end but you would
never know I'm Congress because there's
going one two three
you lose no dynamic there's no accent
this could easily be in four one two
three four ice bm7 that's right we can't
really tell just by strumming unless you
do something dynamic to restart the bar
one that's what gives it that time that
kind of vibe all right so the next one
we're going to do is going to be kind of
like a Elliott Smith fish between the
bars we're still incorporating that root
note into it we're going to make it a
little more dynamic okay
so we're actually to take two bars of
three we can even think of this as one
bar of six if you want to count it like
that and I'll slow it down and basically
what I'm doing now is I'm taking an E
minor but I'm adding my pinkie to the IE
string third fret so now I'm adding a G
to a a minor chord which G is the
seventh note in a minor so getting a
minor step alright so for the first bar
I'm just doing this
I'm getting ruder on the water now if
it's happening on the end of one and
then the two and three and I'm just kind
of aiming for the D and g strings maybe
even getting the B string I don't have
to be precise about this it's going to
and three and down up down up okay
it's a good way to kind of break the
cord into pieces instead of getting the
whole setting a little bit more but then
dynamic so basically that first bar is
one two and three and and now the real
dynamic part the cool part of this
strumming pattern is on the next bar and
we're really going to hit that one hard
with the rest of the court the top of
the port the highest friends I'm going
to maybe like a G B and E string right
if you get more than that or less than
that doesn't matter as long as you give
it a little more a little more power
you're going to get a cool sound so
we're also going to get the 2 and the 3
end with this shoe after I guess ask
hard 1 on the second bar so 1 2 n 3 and
1 2
and one to every and ever

I'm going to move the root note of the B
to Abby
I can use this with any cord again you
know we take something totally different
take like a demon minor seven flat five
three minor steps left we get as weird
as we want but it's really just that
kinda 1 2 & 3 & 1 2 & 3 & 1 2 & 3 & 1 2
& 3 & 1 2 & 3 clean 1 2 & 3 & even by
itself muted it kind of has a vibe ok so
the third one we're going to do is we're
going to leave that middle beat we're
not going to NP we're just going to add
down strip so it's going to be 1 & 2 3 &
1 & 2 3 & and it's going to create a
kind of an interesting dynamic we're
going to do it 1 & 2 3 & 1 & new
but that in kind of a forward propulsion
by leaving that the end of to wide open
or every other Vita of those with six
beats one and two and three and four M
this is going to be represented but
skipping that middle and of to be kind
of gives it a cool vibe 1 & 2 3 & 1 & 2
& 1 & 2 now if you notice a dynamically
I'm working my way through the court so
I'm not hitting just the root note but
the one am are going to be the lower
part of the court so maybe just like the
a B and D strings 1 & 2 and now - I'm
going a little bit higher now I'm just
getting vvv I'm leaving that a string
out 1 & 2 3 and then the three and the
and of 3 is getting the top of the chord
and what that does is we're working our
way through this chord 1 & 2
it adds kind of like an accent on the
back of that bar
the
so that kind of that hitch almost by
omitting the end of to like I said kind
of creates like accent on the backbeat
there and kind of gives it like a
driving kind of propulsion that brings
you back to the one and kind of keeps it
going that's the cool thing about three
four I feel like if you like working
with loops or a looper pedal it's like a
good thing to kind of keep you engaged
because you know there's a lot of
different ways to play time signatures
honestly but three four five my favorite
time signature because it always just
kind of it's just real smooth and just
keeps going and going and I think a lot
of that is just depending upon how you
play it so it's good to have a couple
different strumming patterns under your
belt in any different time signatures so
