How to End a Song on Guitar Video Lecture - Guitar Become a Pro (English)

if I learned one thing from my old man
it's the book learnin is for sissies if
I learned two things it's it's not how
you start it's how you finish so we're
gonna talk about different ways that you
can finish a song and we're gonna do
them in varying levels of
pretentiousness so we're gonna start the
people's key the key G let's say you're
playing a song this is gonna work at any
key by the way let's say we're doing
like a progression that's like G just C
- D
to eat okay II minor right so the first
thing you can do the easy thing you do
is just n where you began it's called
resolving on the one courtroom kijiye so
again we got that progression G D and C
it's by different

play a G major chord milk that G major
chord
okay no you finish it let people know
that it's finished some kind of our
movement really helps that's the easiest
way to do it now another thing that I
like to do especially always on bass
guitar I'm over playing the bass guitar
and band or something like that I always
do this do the same thing GC D yeah
maybe I'll fake stop here octave slide
into the next highest G on the same
string so how that's gonna work you can
mirror it over the 12th fret the 12th
fret being the octave fret which just
means that if it's the 3rd fret the
third fret pass the 12th fret there's
gonna be that same note so if I want to
take this G
slide all the way up to this gee that's
a good place to stop
very cool sounds great on bass I do it
literally every song I end on a bass
guitar I do that sometimes if I'm
feeling frisky yet I'll even slide it
back and resolve on this G again so hit
the chord slide up fake him out the
slide back finish it okay
now that can be somewhat pretentious
another thing that maybe involves a
little bit more music theory is quick
going to the five chord of whatever key
you're on coming back okay so in that
instance G C D P G
d being the 5 chord of G G a B C D okay
if you don't really know where all the
notes are I urge you to learn them by if
you make a power chord over whatever
you're in that five chord is gonna be
where your ring finger your pinkie is
down the string two frets higher so G
and a D you can turn this into a power
chord you can do it a major chord so G C
D E minor

okay that 5-quart exists to get you back
to the one now to even one-up that let's
turn that five chord into a dominant
seventh chord this is the greatest
invention this is why dominant seventh
chords were created is just you this
move to lead you back to create that
tension that needs to be resolved
making your ending even more fitting so
a da da Matta 7 is as follows to on the
high E string one on the B string 2 on
the g string bottom four strings you
can't end there it's begging for you to
go home and release it now you can start
combining these G C D
okay now we're really linking them
together they're like they're like Legos
you can just connect them and any in any
way that you want to do it so the
beautiful thing about dominant seven
chords is they don't always have to
resolve and a major key let's say then
this is actually the tonal Center this
is an E minor it's a minor thing so we
can use the same chords but we're gonna
be really heavy on this a minor so kind
of like erase the G major musical
palette from what we're thinking of
start with the E minor to us see - a d2
an E
okay same same chords were purposely
leaving that G out because I kind of
wanted to get away from the major nests
of that progression so we have to find
out what is the five of e well we do the
same thing that power chord thing or in
count through it EF G a B so B if we go
to a B dominant seven chord a couple
different ways to that we could do this
one right here
okay that's really taking that d7
popping it up two strings optionally
maybe adding your pinky to the second
fret on the high E string so we've got
you see

and then resolving on that II - so
really a dominant seven chord can
resolve to either a major or minor chord
I could do a b7 - an E major resolve it
there or again like I said paternal son
or zu minor do the same thing okay kind
of experiment get creative with it now
back to the people's key key of G major
another one now this is where I
specialized in pretentious endings is by
doing a fretboard spanning arpeggio into
a higher chord voicing you're gonna love
this you will never end a song in any
way aside from this after you learn this
now we're gonna do it with this this G
major arpeggio kind of she made you add
nine if you want to call it we've done
this in other videos and basically we're
starting with the G no third fret on the
low E string again we can use than
anything if like if we were doing
something to key they just move
everything we're talking about right now
two frets higher we're gonna start with
the G the notes that make up G major
chord are G B and a D so if we played
single notes we'd have a G a B and a d3
e7 e5 a now again we're going for a
pretentious ending arpeggio here I'm
gonna add the a in between the G and the
B and G ABP so we're kind of doing a
four note arpeggio G abd no we're not
done there we could be done there G C D
D minor

that's maybe like a six out of ten
pretentious wise again if it were me
I'm spanning the fretboard we're gonna
take that G abd repeat it the octave G
is just down the string so I've got
three e5 e seven you switch strings five
a go straight down that gives you the
next G we repeat this exact same shape
just in different on the different
strings so if you got three five seven
on the E string five a down to five D
five seven nine D string seven G now
this is where you have to switch
diagonal because the B string is not
tuned to a fourth like you might think
it would be do the exact same thing this
is a G a B D leading us into like again
we mirrored we octave jumped the third
fret past the twelfth fret is another GE
I could end it right here but I'd rather
use a voicing
- kind of just milk that one right there
so again see maybe you're gradually
slowing down to prepare the crowd for
this
beautiful right again nine out of ten
now we're gonna do the ultimate and
pretension we're going to add the
dominant 7 as an arpeggio fretboard
spanning arpeggio to give back to the 1
as its own fretboard spanning arpeggio
this is what I call the Sean Daniels
like assurance
we've got gia see ya
dear B minor now remember what did we
say it was the the thing that's gonna
cause the resolution on the G that d7
right I'm gonna start that arpeggio on
the fifth fret of the a string uh start
the same thing okay I'm right there I
can leave that into a d7 beard past that
so again I'm doing a fifth fret on the a
string this is idea I'm just doing the
same thing
da its major third its fifth
D to his major third to its fifth do tus
major third which is the top of that
devoicing it bring it back into the G
major voicing it and then mercifully end
it for everybody involved again you're
gonna have varying degrees of fun with
this you can take you seriously just do
a quick little a one two a dominant
seven or two a one resolution a nice
easy resolution the octave slide you
view the same thing with any of these
again like we didn't really talk about
minor arpeggios but I've got other
videos on minor arpeggios the point is
just to kind of really milk the ending
of a song when it's appropriate you
might not always want to annoy everybody
you're playing music with but it's
definitely good for laughs sometimes
taken maybe more conservatively it's
something that you kinda want in your
toolbox to be able to do and it all
comes from just thinking about different
arpeggios over record where the
resolution is in a song it might not
always be the one chord or major key
sometimes you might have to use your ear
to find out where it is but once you
find out where that resolution is
exploited because your listeners will
thank you for it
