or the only thing colder than the licks
is my sympathy towards people who grow
enormous hipster beards and then
complain about being hot in 74 degree
weather all right so the chill lick they
were gonna learn today is gonna sound
like this
okay now we have been doing hot licks
but I thought we might jazz it up a
little bit to kind of chill the
temperament for a second and this is
gonna be kind of based around the
chillest thing in the world a major
seven chord specifically a major seven
and it might be a good lesson in kind of
seeing different pieces of skills in
thought inside larger scales and
basically we're just gonna start off by
hitting him that a note on the low E
string the fifth fret and then we're
gonna jump from here to the octave a so
we're thinking of a major scale type
thing going on here and again if you
don't know that it's just five seven on
the e string four five seven on the a
string four six seven on the D string so
really really simple we're just kind of
making gonna make something I don't know
these seven different notes eight spots
one two three four five six seven so
gonna go from the one to the eight an
octave jump to the major seven
okay so five-year 7260 yeah and then
we're gonna end up on this Ino in the
seventh fret on the a-string good so
it's gonna be kind of like the first
part of this phrase or like boom boom
boom and it's really kind of like a
major seven chord arpeggio now if we're
just making arpeggio play a major 7th
chord 100 a time we just take the first
the third fifth and the seventh note
that would be just a straight up our peg
into a chord voicing but we're gonna
kind of jump around a little bit to make
it seem maybe less like an exercise so
one eight seven five
and then we're gonna do this little run
right here which might actually sound
familiar because it's kind of another
scale that we've learned before hidden
inside of this major shape so what we're
gonna do is we're gonna go all the way
to the six note in the major scale a
major to go 1 2 3 4 5 6 ok so the 4th
fret on the d-string is the 6th note of
the a major scale the reason that 16 was
important is because we're the relative
minor exists inside of a key so the
minor scale you can play the minor scale
from here and if we just start playing
the minor scale a planer just like that
now I could just call the fret numbers
to make that minor scale 4d 6 7 on the D
string or 6 7 on the g string 5 7 on the
b string says the minor scale now this
would actually be the F sharp minor
scale you play the same thing here ok so
you can think of this as a mode within
the major scale but we're really just
gonna kind of run up the the beginning
of it so again from the beginning we've
got this root note is octave first five
notes of that F sharp minor scale or you
can just think of these as just playing
through part of the a major scale really
as far as the notes are concerned
there's no difference just different
ways looking the same thing all right

back to the root note and then a chord
voicing of kind of what we just played
this is a major seven chord voicing five
e index finger six D with the ring
finger six G with your pinky and five B
with your middle finger okay a movable
shapes this is a major seven a sharp B
flat major seven B major seven C so on
and so forth okay so again the reason
this is like a lake is because we can
move this around in different spots
alright so one more time we've got so
chill incredibly shell now where would
we move this to and just kind of a
progression or something like that is to
the four chord and any key this lick is
technically to work over either the one
chord or the four chord source think
thing in the key bay again if you know
your intervals of the major scale we can
count through it like one two three four
and find what note that is that is a D
so D major 7 is another core that would
work really well but I want to move this
down the neck so we're gonna go one two
three four so we have a root note a
whole step a whole step and a half step
always gets you to the fourth note and a
key it from the first note and there
this is a denote tenth fret and these
are the exact same thing

so we can start on a alright so not
really the main goal of this is to not
so much memorize different looks but
it's to be able to create things you
under yourself so let's talk about maybe
just a little bit of how you can
incorporate some of the modal stuff
we've talked about before into this now
we've got this first one that we did
with the a major scale which is you know
the first mode a major now we go to the
four chord right D a B c-sharp D that's
gonna be where the Lydian mode exists
okay so let's say we want to kind of do
something in the same vein but we want
to incorporate that Lydian quality into
it so instead of having the D major
scale Lydian is a major scale but with
one difference a sharp four one two
three four okay so really similar but
it's got that no added into it so we
want to work that note into maybe
creating a similar kind of lick so maybe
instead of going from the root to the
octave to the major seven to the five we
could go from the root to the five to
the sharp four back to the five

so we'd have like a a major 2a D major
and even though it's just a little it
kind of takes a little bit of the chill
out of it and adds some of the Lydian
as' into it so like I said it's more
about just thinking of the intervals in
a scale or a mode to be able to build
your own licks or riffs out of and then
maybe kind of work them into chord
progressions and start maybe seeing how
a melody might change depending on where
you are within a key which I think is
really important so anyways if you have
