Suspended Guitar Chords Crash Course Video Lecture - Guitar Become a Pro

a lot of stuff gets suspended on this
channel most notably the viewers
disbelief that such an ultimate man can
truly exist but today were talking about
suspended chords and specifically how
they pertain to open chord voicings so
I've already done another video on
suspended chords that kind of goes a
little bit more into the theory of it
I wish a link each you to but I just
want to talk about kind of how to
inflect open chords with the suspended
to suspend for as what they mean stuff
like that alright so we're gonna start
off with just regular example of a C
major chord okay now to really
understand how suspended chords work and
if you ever see like a sea of sus 2 or a
sus 4 that's short for suspended and the
difference being you kind of need to
understand the notes in the major scale
that you're using so C major scale is
really easy
this is cdefg a and B 1 2 3 4 5 6 & 7
just as you can see it and to make this
C major for most people's you know one
of the first few chords they learn you
need to take the 1st the 3rd and the 5th
note and combine music ok so if I play
the bottom five strings here I've got a
see I've a a G another C and another
view ok so I am fulfilling the requisite
one three five to make that C major for
now if I were to take even the two or
the four and replace the 3rd in there
now I get a suspended chord right so if
I take those notes and then I get rid of
this e you right now my middle finger is
on the e ok and as long as I don't play
the high E string if I'm just focusing
on the middle four strings I just have
C's ease and G's I take this key I'm
gonna lose it
I'm gonna open it up to make it the D
string I get a C
suspended two really cool kind of open
chord sounding thing I really kind of
like a pretty a pretty voicing cease us
to you that is AC a dia and a GU I knew
the same thing but by taking that major
third and replacing it with the fourth
note and the same majors ago which is an
F so C Avenue G is the C suspended for
okay so we're gonna go through some
other examples of these two but before
we get to that I want to talk about how
this pertains to major and minor because
the suspended chord either two or four
is it major or minor and we're gonna
kind of see why that is right now so I
do want to use a different key for the
example we're going to use we're going
to use the key of a alright so if I go
through the notes of the a major scale I
get an a a b a c sharp a D and E and F
sharp G sharp and then back to a okay
one two three four five six seven now as
we just stated before you take the one
the three and the five to make yourself
a major chord okay so try to beat me to
this see what what three notes make up a
a major Florida what three notes make up
at a sus 2 chord and what three notes
make up in a sus 4 chord okay so a major
chord is just one three five AC sharp
and Egan
alright now in this regular voice may we
have you can just open your pinkie up
and that adds a B so I have a a B and E
yeah that's a a sus 2 or I can take my
pinkie and move to the third fret which
is a D so I have an a a d India a major
a sus 2 a sus 4 yeah you'll hear you'll
hear this stuff in all sorts of
different songs

suspending the sound of suspended chords
is like prevalent through rock folk any
type of music that you really want to
talk about now I want to talk about how
this pertains to minor as well so in the
same breath let's talk about the notes
in the a minor scale okay ABCD efg and
then a okay so same thing if we number
one two three four five six seven we can
see we take we take that one same one
three five formula from the minor scale
to make a a minor chord which is a a C
okay so that's the difference between a
major in a minor chord now if I were to
take the same thing if I wanted to
replace that C now in a minor scale with
the second note and the a minor scale I
end up with a sus two chord absolutely
no different from if I was deflecting a
major chord or a minor chord I wanted to
take the four add that for I sell them
end up with a D and E so as you can see
suspended four chords to spend two
chords aren't a major thing they aren't
a minor thing it's just a cool thing
because you can do to start inflicting
either class of chord alright so I kind
of wanted to clear that up now I would
be I would be remiss to say and I don't
think I'm telling tales out of school
here when I say that I personally find
that suspended chord inflections used a
little bit more often on major chords
than minor chords but I didn't mean you
can't use them on minor chords either
like tangerine by Led Zeppelin is a
great example of using suspended minor
chords or suspending minor chords again
a suspended chord by itself is not a
major or minor it's an important
distinction to think about but I want to
take a few more major chord voicings and
start inflecting them with those
suspensions as they were I think the
most popular one is probably D major
okay really easy way to do that is just
to make the find the fourth note and the
D scale Tegea third fret and the high E
string probably one of the first
suspended chords machines like a DSS
four and then diso's two would be
opening that high E string so anytime
you see a D major chord

I got a lot of examples through rock
history or that use these suspended
chords okay now again you can't you know
you you might not always want to use
these like for instance in certain modes
the suspended four chord won't be in key
again we're getting a little bit of
however selves I just want to talk about
a few chord voicings D being a really
important one
a major being another important one now
if we go back to the C okay
here's there's another distinction that
I see people kind of get confused on a
lot if I just add maybe like that that D
remember we had that C major and we open
the D string up and I do this now if I
have this high E string in here still
I'm actually not replacing the major
third with the second note because the
high E string is still giving me a major
third so that's still kind of like
keeping its major class intact so now
when I look at adding that D to what you
know maybe some people think of as a C
suspended two chord voicing it really is
I'm keeping that I'm adding a knob okay
so we said the D was the second note in
the C scale well if we go all the way
through c d e f g a b c d again d is
also the 9th note if we go through again
now as long as we have that third intact
we're gonna take the ID and we're gonna
see it as an add 9 we're adding the 9th
note to a c major chord instead of
taking a c major chord and suspending
the third okay so again some you know
it's not a big deal it's like if i if i
ever met you out in the world and you're
playing this chord you call it a c
suspended to it and even if i hear a
little bit of that high e string in
there you know I'm gonna like slide it's
gonna be fine it's gonna be okay but not
everyone is as gracious as I am so
that's kind of a difference between an
add nine chord and a sus 2 chord all
right now just like we can do it here C
major C suspended for
he's suspended too we can do the same
thing with like a G major chord okay and
I kind of like the sound of this because
it's a little lower it has a little more
low end to it the bass notes kind of get
suspended and I think that's a really
interesting thing especially on guitar
when it happens so if we take a G major
chord and let's actually just focus on
the lowest three strings we have third
fret on the E string second fret of the
a string and an open D string so G B and
D now if we tur take the notes of the G
Major scale we find out the second note
is an a so we can take this B open it up
now some time and these chord voicings
we were using we're just opening strings
up to kind of get the two most of the
time in a more practical manner like
these bar chords you're kind of doing
our pages or something a good thing to
think of the two is always going to be
two frets lower than the major third all
right
so I can just take my pointer finger off
now I have a G and a
gyah she's suspended too
geez suspended for I just add the sea to
it

okay so just kind of things you can do
with maybe like the lower end of the car
so just four major chords that you're
gonna see pop up in countless songs and
you know if you want to maybe try to do
something to spice up your playing a
little bit to start working in the end
of suspensions into your strumming so
whenever you see a D chord is something
the key D or even if it's not in the key
if it's in keachi you know you try to
you
something you can do they'll really kind
of you know add a little bit of action
to that corner same thing with a worn a
minor
