How to Link Pentatonic Guitar Shapes Video Lecture | Guitar: Become a Pro (English) - Music

if we've learned anything from Jumanji
movies and Baldwin brothers we know that
whatever comes second is usually best so
today we're talking about two pentatonic
positions we're adding the second one to
the game and we're gonna come up with
some dazzling and musical exercises each
one more impressive than the last so if
you missed the last video all we really
did is we talk about the E minor
pentatonic scale position one which
looks like this open three open two now
we're getting into the realest the
realest territory we'll ever see you
we're getting this guy right here
position two
okay so it's around a genome we're doing
this in the key of G E minor
same difference all this stuff is gonna
be movable one of my favorite shapes
here okay and if you want to look at it
it's three five on the low E string -
five on the a string - five on the D
string the g string three five on the B
string and three five on the E string
now the thing about pentatonic positions
is when you learn one you also learn
half of the next position okay
so that very first one if you have that
one memorize like you should by now we
have open three open to open to open to
open three open three now the second
note on every string is going to be the
first note of the next shape they stack
on top of each other okay so open three
that means the third one the third fret
here is gonna be the first note of my
next shape over to second note is the
first note of my next thing they look
together which the very first exercise
we're gonna do is we're actually just
gonna extend and play through both of
these shapes from position to position
okay so instead of just riffing through
one position we're actually gonna play
two positions worth of notes of three
notes per string alright open three five
is gonna be the first one so the first
two notes of position one and the second
two notes of position 2 which is family
all right now the next one is gonna be
open five now when you do it this way
you'll notice that the yoyo end up
playing the same tone two times in a row
because this is eg a a BB okay you'll
end up playing to a zero but I still
think it's good practice even though
might not sound like you're advancing
through a scale because we keep hitting
that same counter it's good practice
because we're kind of singing so again
not super musical just yet but it's a
good way to kind of see where they come
into play another cool thing you do
instead of reaching like this you could
slide because that's more of like a real
world practical application where you
can use like the cool slides and
hammer-ons and pull-offs to kind of
really started flying through these all
right so that's just one way to do it
another way a lot of people tell you
practice is to go forward through one
shape then slide into the Dead Sea
go backwards again
that's really cool on to go for it now
the one that I actually like doing is
start ascending through one scale or one
shape because then it's more of a
continuous thing that you're kind of
extending okay so what I did right there
is I started doing the first three
strings of position wanna open three and
open to open now instead of playing the
G note on the open g string I'm actually
gonna slide to the G note on the fifth
fret of the D string to kind of continue
and to position two this is how we're
starting to link these shapes together
to kind of connect them in a more fluid
way all right
so position one open three open two open
to slide into position to five to the
same one to be back
right but I think the best way to do is
to challenge yourself and be able to
slide into a different shape from every
single string and then maybe slide back
into it so if we start on position one
maybe on the a string we're gonna use
them as our slide into the next one so
open three and open five and then that
g-string is backwards into we have going
on okay now really the main reason you
want to do this is to be able to build
just nasty killer blues licks right
that's what the pentatonic scale was
invented for I think if we focus in on a
selective number of notes that's a
really great way to do it and I think
personally one of my favorite ones in
this position is to slide into this year
the g string fourth fret okay so if you
take the g string I'm gonna walk all the
way into it three five two five four
five no one right here you're tough tons
of Blues let's start here
and then use the next four notes or so
three or four notes alright so yeah the
B string and the E string right so we
gotta have this little box right now

this is really a great thing that you
can do and this is where the kind of
major nosov this shape comes into play
because remember in the first one we
said then this shape kind of hides
behind in an E minor forward now we're
starting on achieve with this one okay
so this really kind of hides behind it G
major Florida specifically if you use
the G major Barre chord you take you
where your middle fingers right there
and there's that note that we're talking
about the fourth fret on the g string
that is a great place to slide into I

really can stir makes a cool blues list
you see this you know and a lot of
different uh famous blues songs coming
from this shame which behind this form
okay so really kind of focusing with
your middle finger in here because again
that's and then you start going back and
forth through these notes for g3 b25 be
free even just these four notes

really a lot of cool things can become
come from missus wanted spot okay now
another really cool thing that we can do
now that we have two shapes that we're
working with is to start double stopping
with your both of them because it's one
thing just to see single notes as we're
using here and again that is really
great for soloing for making licks and
stuff like that but for kind of good
food all around playing you might want
to start using double stops double stops
where you use two of these notes at the
same time to almost kind of play that
little miniature chords alright
I think pentatonic double stops are
really great underutilized guitar sound
that a lot of beginner intermediate
intermediate players almost kind of skip
because they don't think about it so it
is my goal in life just spread the
double stops through land and we're
gonna continue right here okay so
instead of going through we're gonna do
both of these shapes position you wanted
to alright so instead of going them
through and going through them a single
note we're gonna do two notes at a time
alright so I'm gonna play the E and the
a string both the notes in this scale
which the first shape is super easy
because it's always gonna be open
remember the first note on each string
and position one is gonna be the same
frat whether it's an open position or
like an a minor position so if we double
staff through them it's just the first
one's gonna be Ian a together now the
next one is gonna be the second note
from the e string in the second note
from the a string so remember three at E
and two and now if I play these together
it's like the beginning of G major chord
right achieve its major third so I have
now I'm gonna advanced one string down
so I'm gonna hit open a and open d
and then the second note in that
position for both of those strings which
is 2a so now it's kind of like a minor
chord so you're gonna see a lot more a
lot more musical options with this kind
of thing because we're already seeing
the chords or at least pieces of the
chords inside these positions because
all the stuff is linked together it's
not like you're playing me or you're
playing chords or whatever pentatonic
playing is great for more than just
soloing it's also great to kind of see a
lot of the cores behind a song and kind
of maybe the options that you have to
play over chords or extend chords within
a song so we've got the first one open
Ian open again 3e to a an open an open D
to a the next one is gonna be open dear
- gee
three
and both on three

all right now the next thing which is
really just a little bit harder is doing
the next position now the only thing
that we we don't have the luxury of is
using the open strings as our first of
the the two Devils house for group of
strings but yeah if you think of three
five two five that's easy enough that's
three two and five five the nice thing
about this this shape is almost five out
of the six strings and on the fifth fret
okay we just have to worry about the g
string is being the one that's the
fourth so is this kind of seeing these
patterns to really help you out but
again the first one is three to a and
five on both then we have to a into D
and again a lot of these the first of
each of these two double stops that
we're doing is going to be the second of
the previous shape which is one more way
to kind of reinforce that the bottom of
shape shape one is actually the top of
shape too all right so those doubles
helps are gonna be the same we're just
really adding it a couple of them down
here alright so we've got three into a
five and five minute however you want to
play this to a uni 5a and 5b
into gene here's where we have the one
where that g string is 4 so we have 5 d
4k alright the next one is going to be 2
G 3 B when my personal favors rate is
sliding

and again you can really kind of add
these to the licks that you want to do
for example the one that we did were
what it was

you can really kind of create a lot of
you know interesting to note double sub
things all just through using two
positions of denna tonic so again a lot
of different things you give you
remember to extend as two different
shapes or maybe go forward and backwards
through on the other one I really just
kind of double stomping through I'll
give you some really cool sounds you're
gonna start building your lick
vocabulary through these different ones
and then we're gonna add a third one
