Road Trippin Through the Guitar Fretboard Video Lecture - Guitar Become

today we are going on a road trip but
not the kind the ends in a creepy truck
stop flashlights party the kind of goes
through the guitar fretboard with
multiple stops and we're talking about
basically navigating through this
fretboard finding your way out of chord
shapes maybe into different scale shapes
that you want to use and kind of how
those different intervals will make
sense musically alright so C major chord
this is gonna be our chord for the day
right the the Honda Civic of guitar
chords tried and true always reliable
all right so three a to D open G one B
now what we're gonna do is we're gonna
connect this with two different scale
shapes in different parts of the
fretboard so I'm just gonna breeze
through these I have all the videos on
these shapes if you want to get more
in-depth into them first one's gonna be
really good old a minor scale shape so
it's really five seven eight five seven
eight five seven nine five seven five
six eight five seven eight and then the
one that's right below that B Locrian
okay so that would be seven eight ten
seven eight ten seven nine we're gonna
stop right there okay so just this spot
and this spot now we're gonna connect
these to a C major chord now the way to
do this I think one of the best ways to
do this is taking arpeggio that runs
through the spot of of learning these
scale shapes I got a question I get a
lot is like okay I know some scale
shapes how do I add these to a chord to
make it sound musical how do I get from
one thing to another there's kind of the
inspiration for this video and again a
lot of that is just really learning one
piece of an arpeggio that will run you
to where you need to go so when I say
arpeggio just play this note this chord
one note at a time this is two C and E
and G note a great way to get from here
is take the root note see find the next
note in that chord which is an E but
instead of playing it here on the second
fret of the d-string we're gonna slide
it to the seventh fret on the a-string
so see you
it even sounds cool to slide a little
bit okay and then we're gonna take the
next note G which is the fifth fret on
the d-string
Sam is open g string right so
all right now maybe this is all you want
to do maybe just want to take a C chord
and jam out a little bit and this is one
way to kind of start adding a little bit
of flavor to your chords but again I
want to take this into a different
position now right here if you notice my
pointer finger is lined up on the fifth
fret of the D string and remember when
you do that a minor scale pointer
fingers lined up with the fifth fret on
all the strings right
so from this arpeggio we can kind of
continue on through the major the minor
scale like that and that's just going
forward and backward through scale
there's nothing really musical about
that but once you kind of see these
connections you kind of jump back and
forth in between them a little bit
easier right so the next thing I want to
do is take that arpeggio one spot
further so again we have three on the a
string that C and - its major third the
e into its fifth we go down another
string and that's where we served
against an octave apart C major
that's another C now we can start that
arpeggio again
the next time up it would be the same
thing four frets higher which again
that's just what we did here three to
seven is four frets just like five GU to
nine G is four frets see you do an Ian
it's good to start being able to know
where you were to find these different
notes and then it's essentially the same
shape remember how he went and then down
string back you frats it's really the
same thing but when we get to the B
string down a string down one fret back
one fret so we end up getting the G
being the eighth fret on the B string
okay just like that now my middle finger
is lined up with the eighth fret my
pointer finger would be lined up with
the seventh right if we're doing a one
fret per finger type deal going on here
which that next mode would line up with
the thing we just did right so this
would be the B Locrian mode just way to
play the notes of C major starting out
of me
essentially giving us seven eight ten
seven eight ten seven nine okay you can
easily think of this as being a C major
the major scale shape class I wanted to
talk about looking because Locrian is
kind of like the Waffle House of
road-tripping because it's its
underlying presence has always felt but
you never really want to end up there
alright so this is just one you get from
[Music]
and then just be aware of where these
notes are these chord tones being just
the notes in the chord oh this is off of
C major find out where the sees using
G's are in these different shapes all
right that's a really great way to
familiarize with up yourself with a
musical scale hand position and then
just maybe kind of being able to
understand how it works in a more
musical context by it identifying those
chord tones arpeggios are a fantastic
way to start learning those because they
just kind of sound I just think they
sound a little more musical however you
want to add it to it you can use any
kind of voicing to get in not really any
of the the chords in this key are gonna
work I'm just using C major as the
example because it is the the root of
the scale C major chord C major key
right same differently to do another
voice and we could do my all-time
favorite C major 7 voicing 3 5 4 5
starting on the a string and now maybe
we don't even have to run an arpeggio in
it maybe we've kind of practiced this
enough to know that the a minor scale
shape is sitting right here
remember when your pointer finger ended
up lining up with the fifth track it's
not much kind of creating these markers
however you want to see it so now I know
that I can just slide my ring finger
into the 7th fret and that lines me up
with back a minor shape which again you
can simplify it even more by making a
minor pentatonic I've got about a
million videos on the pentatonic scale
or any of the licks videos a lot of
those use the pentatonic scale it's
gonna make something bluesy something
like that you just take in the mirror

however you want to do it once you get
in here once you get into your lick zone
no one where the link zone is is for
tiny road trip absolutely
road tripping through all these we're
gonna arpeggiate it into the B Locrian
spot and then end at another seat
alright so what I just did right there
we're gonna take two different C major
seven voicings this one 3a v d4g 5b and
I want to connect it to this guy right
here same chord different spot alright
so we have eight on the E string this is
a SIA ring finger 9 d think e 9g middle
finger 8b all right
I wonder I'm gonna run them that our
Pesci oh into that spot now I could just
make the chord there but I kind of
wanted maybe a little bit more filler a
little more action there so I'm gonna
jump into this scale I'm not gonna play
an order all right so once I get here

and then just kind of start moving my
way around into there again kind of
sounds like noodling because really
generally it is but there is a time and
a place for noodling and that's just
kind of like understanding how all these
shapes kind of connect to each other
when you can use minor pentatonic stuff
if that's really what you want to kind
of slide through and then combining them
with different chord voicings that you
know that's really what it's all about
and I really personally think that
learning our Pesce owes all along the
fretboard is the best way to start
connecting all the stuff because a solid
arpeggio will slide all the way through
doesn't matter where you start you start
on AG and that's gonna take you
throughout the fretboard so being able
to kind of see it and maybe a partition
off little pieces of it that's why I'm
learning these scale hand positions are
great even if you don't think of this as
modal playing it's really all these
positions are just teaching you how to
find the notes so you're looking for in
each spot of the guitar fretboard and
you know you just
