Why Do I Even NEED to Learn all These Guitar Chords! Video Lecture - Guitar

today we're talking about gravity but
not the kind of gravity that my
Instagram BM seem to have with pictures
of shirtless dudes
enough is enough Ricardo we're talking
about the type of gravity the cords have
to a home key or with each other so a
lot of questions I have are like why do
we have to learn all these chords all
these weird chord voicings stuff like
that why can't I just learn the open
chords music capo I really think that
learning how chords are made and where
they belong how they affect each other
is one of the most important things
music that you can really use to unlock
everything about music whether it be
lead playing solo playing any type of
genre so today we're just gonna talk
about stuff in the key of Jesus so a lot
of time in this video I'm just gonna be
kind of jammin on stuff in the key of G
because I really wanted to develop the
total Center for how all this stuff is
gonna work that we're talking about and
how these chords relate to each other
okay so I made a video about a year ago
called how to harmonize the major scale
okay so that phrase in and of itself can
be kind of intimidating for people
who've never talked about music theory
but I think is really important it's
actually very easy okay so if we just
take scale a group of notes sound good
together
the major scale is kind of like the king
scale and western music it's just seven
notes you don't even need to know the
notes just know there are seven of them
and this is in G starting on a g g a b c
d e f-sharp E all of those notes become
chords alright and now they can become a
bunch of different type of chords but at
the core they're either major or minor
okay and the interesting thing is like
okay why do I have to learn all these
chords because different types of chords
will have a relationship to one certain
type of chord alright
so again this is just a G and that I'm
always going to be coming back to
because that's like the parent key of
what we're doing now one thing that you
might see a lot is a five chord - one
chord okay all that means if you don't
know what the numbering means is just
what note in this
scale that Court is based off of so in
GE g a b c d v note in G is ADEA it's
usually a major chord right so D major
to gia has a cool sound move because
that D is unresolved we resolve it with
the G ok and again that's why I'm just
gonna play this G chord over and over
again in this video because how these
chords relate to each other is the
important thing that I'm trying to drag
on all right every single number of
those seven notes is gonna have a
different relationship to the home key
alright like the two chord is it a minor
ok you play different voicings and
that's kind of why I think learning
different voicings of chords into
different spots will have a different
effect now I'm just playing an open G
chord here alright again I said the two
chords the a minor are we gonna play a
barre chord a minor open a minor it has
kind of a different sound to it then
maybe other minor chords in that same
Kia so the three chord and G G a B it is
also a minor Florida okay so the sound
of a three I think is a little more
impactful and a lot of that has to do
with the distance away from G that B is
and also because B happens to be a note
in the key there in the chord of G major
C in that G chord my pointer fingers on
the root note that I'm using for that
okay but aside just from just you know
knowing which make minor chords major
chords go in the key how they affect the
key it is important and how they affect
the tonal center in the mood of whatever
you're trying to do now the four chord
in the key of G is C
okay so now you can kind of tell how
that's like moving the profession along
and then the five chord is back to that
D and that D major chord almost sounds
like the most natural one because it's
something that we hear a lot in western
music like a one to a five or a five
back to one the 5/4 is almost built to
take you back home okay now this is just
one voicing of a D major chord no that
would be like it sounds really similar a
lot of different you can do it but again
these are just really basic chords now I
think the real interesting thing is once
you start adding extended chords into it
like that's a d7 alright just like all
of these are major or minor triads as
they're called an extended chord is
going to give a little bit more of a
feel and I think kind of really
reinforce the sound of the number chord
sequence that you're using all right so
again that's just the 5 - a 1 we can do
a regular 5 triad - a 7 2:01 DD 7

now there's a lot of different ways we
can do this right but I want to go to
the 6th chord okay that's gonna be the
minor one and the 6th note in the key of
G is the E and so II minor
so if you notice similar from f5 201 a
couple times it has a certain feel even
if it's extended b7 when you go to a 6
chord it almost kind of like continues
with what that D chord is trying to do
in the progression and again this is
just kind of like how I'm interpreting a
lot of these sounds a lot of this is up
for debate you know however you kind of
feel like you're hearing the music in
building your own chord progressions
which is something then if you have any
kind of like songwriting ambition it's
something that I think you really need
to kind of spend some time to think
about but that 5 4 to the 6 chord it
almost is kind of picking up with a five
chord left off and then advancing it one
number through the scale right
and again this a minor depends on which
voicing you want to use this is a higher
voice II minor here so on the Asian we
can extend this a minor 7
minor nine and that's why these
extension cords like learning minor nine
shapes may be like minor eleven shakes
all day and all the different notes that
you add is gonna affect how a court is
gonna relate to its home key all right
so now all of them have their own kind
of feel and taste and one thing that I
like to do is kind of distinguish what I
like about different keys one thing that
if you see my playing a lot I just kind
of resort to like major seven chords a
lot I really like the sound of the four
chord as a major seven so a four to A
one I think sounds good to me
but it sounds better as a major seven
four and even a major seven four to a
major seven one so you can actually take
the name of a chord major seven whatever
you want it to be it and then apply it
to a number and then it kind of makes
sense instead of just a four to a 1 or
five to one you call like a major seven
four to one and that's something like
maybe doesn't use it you might
understand it even though it's kind of
like the natural extension of a four but
if you want to kind of get fancy and
start thinking about alright maybe you
want to get something different you can
take what's naturally or organically
traditionally used like that's like that
five to one progression we did it
earlier where it was D to G and then d7
g7 we need the dominant seven uh what if
you want to do something that maybe is
less traditional like make that five
chord a major seven chord instead of a
dominant seven chord
you'd get
and that's a little bit different than
all right not so different but major
seven and that's kind of something that
like I feel is what gives me a little
bit of a voice as a player isn't
something that I do a lot so maybe if
you're trying to like search for your
voice as a player be a little bit more
thoughtful about what kind of chords
that you are I mean this is just stuff
how I think of it another thing that
I'll do like a three 2:01 that 3/4 of B
and this key and again also moveable
once you know the names of the notes and
rukia I'll turn that three chord into a
a minor 11 forever and again I always
take that one quarter and make it major
7 so 3 2 1
a three minor 11 to one major seven but
that has the same chord minor 11 m3 on a
Jew and I'm the one and really has the
same as B minor a minor one right that's
just a three to one progression it
really couldn't be any simpler I was
going backwards through the scale
degrees but then once you maybe find
shapes if you like three two one three
two four five one

and all of a sudden you kind of got you
know was kind of a cool progression if
you uh need more and more maybe like the
minor Levin on the freeness you four
five six to kind of leave it hanging all
right what do we got to do it hmm
alright so we're kind of creating like
an atmosphere where all these chord
shapes and and everything matters and
again it's not so much you know I really
think the music theory is obviously
important I make a lot of videos on it
but it's not so much like okay how do I
get that kind of feeling how do I move a
progression in a certain way I really
think it starts with just learning
shapes you know when I say like learning
minor eleven shape this isn't really the
hardest shape in fact this is really a
much easier shape than some of the
shapes that people get into like okay
like uh like maybe an a string rooted
major Barre form that is so much harder
to make than this is right if you want I
did a video of minor eleven chords I
should probably link it because because
minor eleven chords are under use right
learn a minor eleven shape if you're
starting out instead of forcing your
hand and into like uh what may be less
comfortable at a major Barre chord shape
and then start experimenting with that
because I really think there's a huge
opportunity for a certain level of
players to kind of take some of this you
know music theory is just core building
it and then start applying it to the
playing earlier when these chords might
sound like fancy because they have fancy
names again they're easier than playing
a lot of these easier more introductory
chords but I really think it's just way
more valid musically for you to do
things right and then the sooner you
start experimenting with these outside
of akia that's just going to make your
ear a lot better right so again this is
on the key of g-major then we said
really like one for quick a five to a
one maybe a minor eleven
to 201 and again I'm still just harping
on this G chord because in a different
context these chords will sound much
different actually right this is firmly
in the key of G maybe let's take
something from a different McKee
something weird sounds almost does it
sound wrong I mean it sounds way
different but it's wrong it's not wrong
you know maybe you like this now what is
this here this is just a major triad but
in a place where traditionally you might
not find that and that would be like a
sharp 4 major chord and really give this
is like C sharp major to a G it may be
something you don't see a lot but you
know if you kind of really just jam this
home a little bit maybe make that one
more major
you can make it work right again not for
everybody all that is if we count
through the notes in the mage you go 1 2
3 4 5 netsy sharp isn't in there all
right so you look at that as a sharp 4
or a flat 5 you say that's a sharp 4
major chord going back home to one now
is it home I mean because we've been
playing in G major this entire time it
is right we could throw a different
chord shapes on this a lot of different
ways you can do this but I think that
kind of experimentation will help give
you your own sound as a player and to me
like being a skilled guitar player or
whatever it's kind of you know it's an
objective thing really it's like you
know what's that what's a good guitar
player what's like a bag guitar player
or whatever if you're proficient you're
me you know you're doing you don't have
to be like a shredder I don't think like
speed is important at all for me that's
why I never really practice that so much
in my own playing I just kind of think
making cool sounding stuff makes you
like a good guitar player you know and I
think an important part of that is being
able to find your own sound find your
own voice on the instrument and I think
kind of cycling through chords and
seeing how chords relate to each other
is a very very important part in finding
your voice as a musician that maybe
isn't really talked about as much as it
needs to be so anyways I hope some of
