in today's lesson we're going to be
playing sixteenth note based grooves
using one and then two hands on the
hi-hat we need to be able to play all
types of music at all kinds of speeds so
by practicing both one and two-handed
hi-hat patterns we'll be able to develop
the skills necessary to play comfortably
at any speed let's start with a basic
pattern and just your lead hand on the
hi-hat non lead hand on the snare
remember to keep counting one E and a
two E and A three E and a four E and ER
or if you find that too tricky at first
count caterpillar caterpillar

two three four okay let's now try a few
more exercises with some variation on
the bass drum remember to count all the
time and don't try to play these
exercises too fast as your lead hand is
playing a lot of notes exercise two one

four be very careful when you play the
next one it's a bit sneaky with two bass
drum beats on the of two and beat three
so they're close together and they've
still got to line up with the hi hat
exercise five one two three four
so far we've been playing all these
grooves with just one hand on the hi-hat
and that gives us a great sound with
music that is relatively slow but what
happens when the piece of music is just
too fast to play sixteenth notes with
one hand that's right we'll use two
hands on the hi-hat instead first of all
let's have a go out playing just the
hands then we'll add the bass drum once
the hands are comfortable place both
your sticks over the hi-hat in the same
slice of pizza shape you would have when
playing the snare drum the idea is that
we count one E and two E and three E and
four E and ER at all times and play
alternating single strokes on the hi-hat
then when you get to count two and then
for your lead hand should come over from
the hi-hat and play the snare drum
before returning again to the hi-hat
play this exercise many times and
remember to go slowly at first
counting aloud if you need to if you're
playing a left handed kit you should
