this lesson is all about playing quarter
note rock beats and developing the
ability to play the bass drum not just
together with the hi-hat but
independently too in order to play many
of the popular rock beats of today and
develop the skills necessary to play
other musical styles - we need to make
sure that your lead hand isn't dominated
by your foot or vice versa eventually we
are striving to develop a high level of
control with all four limbs
let's start by playing just the bass
drum and hi-hat together it's something
we've done in previous studies so this
one should be fairly straightforward
these notes are all quarter notes so
count one two three four one two three
four
exercise 1 1 2 3 4 ok now because the
rhythms that are coming up are made up
of bass drums that sometimes hit
together with the hi-hat and also
sometimes in between the high hats we
need to practice playing the hi-hat and
bass drum independently this is
sometimes awkward because usually your
lead hand and bass drum foot are both on
the same side of your body ie right hand
right foot and often these limbs are
easier to control together than apart
play this next exercise many times and
concentrate on keeping both limbs
totally separate exercise 2 1 2 3 4 once
you've mastered playing the bass drum
with and without the hi-hat we can start
playing through the rock beat exercises
exercise 3 1 2 3 go
exercise four one two three four
exercise five one two three four
exercise six one two three four exercise
seven one two three four exercise eight
one two three four
exercise nine one two three four okay
now be especially careful with these
last two exercises they're a little bit
more complicated so just play them
slowly and count aloud if you need to
exercise ten one two three four exercise
11 one two three four
these rhythms are really useful if you
need to play faster songs as there are
less notes on the high hat and the bass
drum and snare drum interaction still
gives us the eighth note feel one two
three four
these grooves also sound great with
loose hi-hat a one two three four all
playing the shoulder of the stick on the
Bell one two three four see if you can
hunt down some songs that use the
quarter note rock beat and practice
playing along it will not only help your
time cube but probably help your feel
for the groove - good luck and bye for
