Learning Drums Lesson - 8th Note Triplet Grooves Video Lecture - Learn

today's lesson is all about a new type
of note or more importantly a new
subdivision when we talk about a new
subdivision we're talking about
subdividing the beat into smaller pieces
today we're going to take some quarter
notes and then subdivide them into three
equal parts to make some notes we call
eighth note triplets triplets are the
starting point in rhythm for many styles
of music and feature heavily in African
Irish folk country jazz reggae rock and
especially blues as we'll see later
here's a bar of quarter notes and a bar
of eighth note triplets we'll play this
all on the snare and the count will be
one two three four on triplet two
triplet three triplet four triplet
the bar of triplets will come out
sounding like elephant elephant elephant
elephant keep your sticking single
strokes and start with your lead hand

now that we're starting to get the hang
of playing triplets on the snare we
should try playing a groove using hi-hat
snare drum and bass drum for now we'll
just use one hand on the hi-hat and use
the regular rock beat playing position
you may hear this next groove labeled as
a slow blues groove or as a 12-8 rhythm
twelve eighth notes in every bar it's
essential that you practice these next
exercises many times if you want to play
blues or rock music as they are
incorporated into literally thousands of

hits and ride cymbal with lots of bass

1 2 3 4 there are many ways to play
triplet grooves on the drums see if you
can find some examples of them in
different genres of music and then try
to play along once you recognize their
sound and practice playing them you'll
find that triplets become another
important tool in your toolbox a tool
that will help you unlock many styles
and push you musical boundaries good
