Learning Drums Lesson - 8th Note Triplet Blues Grooves Video Lecture -

in this lesson we're going to be
continuing our studies of eighth note
triplet grooves as applied to a slow
blues groove this time we'll be adding
some drum fills and using certain
sticking methods to make sure we don't
get all tangled up just for a quick
recap here's a bar of quarter notes and
a bar of eighth note triplets we'll play
this all on the snare and the count will
be one two three four one triplet two
triplet three triplet four triplet
the bar of triplets will come out
sounding like elephant elephant elephant
elephant keep your sticking single
strokes and start with your lead hand
notice when we play the triplets the
numbers 1 & 3 will be played with the
lead hand and numbers 2 & 4 with the
non-lead hand this will be important
when we start our fills exercise 1 1 2 3

now we remember how triplets sound we
all set up a little slow blues groove
for two bars and in the second bar I'll
then add a fill idea on the snare the
next exercise will feature a fill that
will start on beat four so be careful as
this is a non lead hand start exercise
two one two three four now here's the
same exercise but the fill in the second
bar will now start on beat three that
means the fill should start on your lead
hand exercise three one two three go
careful again with this next exercise as
the Phil starts on beat two which will
mean starting the Phil on your non lead
hand exercise four one two three four
now we'll play a similar exercise this
time with a lead hand start on beat one
exercise five one two three four the
main purpose of the previous exercises
is to establish that when playing single
strokes with two hands right left right
left right left right left but playing a
subdivision of three notes we get a
side-to-side motion of the lead hand on
the beat and then the non lead hand on
the beat this can feel strange at first
and the desire to play more notes with
the lead hand is strong so remember to
focus on playing consistent single
strokes at all times let's now try a few
exercises with some motion around the
drums applying what we've learned about
sticking and creating some fills to go
with our slow blues groove exercise six

Phil's
using triplets is an important concept
to be familiar with as we've said before
different types of notes are used in
many musical situations and although
we've been playing grooves and fills in
a blue style today triplets are used as
the cornerstone for many other musical
genres we'll be looking at in later
studies practice these exercises along

fits them and you'll master triplets in
no time
