in today's lesson we're going to be
playing some shuffle grooves that we've
worked on in previous studies and trying
to add some fills ready for playing in a
blues shuffle type context let's just
introduce one other important shuffle
groove first it's one that has four bass
drum beats in every bar and is often
referred to as playing four on the floor
it's a really powerful shuffle and is
used a lot in playing blues shuffles as
it's a great way to provide a strong
driving shuffle for the rest of the band
to play over I'm going to use this
rhythm as the basic rhythm part of my
exercises but feel free to use any of
the shuffles from the previous exercises

once you've got that going we'll
introduce a fill in the second bar we're
actually going to use the shuffle rhythm
as our fill but use double strokes as
our sticking here it is with the fill on
the snare drum exercise two one two

now here is the same exercise with a low
Tom added to the fill exercise three one

exercises be careful and make sure
you're playing the correct stickings
some of these next studies have a
mixture of triplets and shuffle rhythm
remember the sticking rule for shuffle
rhythm in the fills is still double

by using the principle of double strokes
for shuffle rhythms and single strokes
for triplet groupings we can develop a
multitude of fills and orchestrate them
in many ways around the drum kit without
ending up on the wrong hand or having
the swap stickings
in the middle of a phrase there are many
other ways of playing triplets and
shuffles around the kit which we'll look
at in future studies but for now these
are a great way to develop a really
strong foundation from which to expand
your blues rock and funk playing good
